What's your "why" for running a marathon? 👇
@nedludd3641
@nedludd3641 Жыл бұрын
My mum & dad worked hard all their lives. When they retired, they stopped and neither lived long after that. Time came when I too retired, stopped, got very fat, prediabetic. My GP gave me 'that talk' five years ago. So, 'NHS Couch to 5K', then 5K ParkRuns, then Half-marathons, now virtual marathons. I want to push myself to the envelope of endurance, because I want to see if, just maybe, I still got it

My "why" was originally to lose weight and get fit. After completing an (albeit woefully underprepared) trail ultra a couple of years ago, my current "why" is to keep improving to reach peak fitness for my age, and definitely complete more long-distance races at a good (for me) pace.

I’m 58 and only started running two years ago after losing 90 lbs and transforming my life during Covid work from home. There’s a lot of backstory, but to be honest now is that I run to feel alive and because I still can. I run to prove to myself and my children that tough things are possible and worth all the effort. I run to be more present in my life, to quiet my mind and be a better person.

Well done Sarah! I am currently training for my first marathon and my "why" is because I am about to turn 40 and have chronic pain and fatigue as the result of my breast cancer treatment when I was 34. I set these goals to celebrate what my body can do, and continue to show myself I am capable of doing difficult things 😊 I run for the friends I made in the support groups that unfortunately didn't get to call themselves survivors 💔

Huge hugs to you, you'll do great! People and stories like yours are what motivate me to get out the door when I'm feeling whiny about my much smaller troubles. I'm currently reading an incredible book called "New Altitude", that follows a women's journey through illness, running, and mountain climbing. You might find it motivating on your journey. Best wishes to you!!

I’m 17 and have a torn ACL and will undergo surgery in October. I tore my ACL about a year ago playing football/soccer and I haven’t played football since and to keep myself distracted running is a big escape for me. Tomorrow I will run my first ever 10k race (two friends and I will do a Team Triathlon) and watching your videos has really helped me with my running journey and I know most people will be way faster than me but you guys made me realise that it’s just a race against myself and I wanted to thank you for that. Also i guess not many people can say they ran 10k without an ACL (or maybe there are many I don’t really know) what I want to say is everybody has a different story and a different goal. I’m proud of you, you are awesome.

Well done Sarah, this was AMAZING and you’re genuinely so inspiring! My ‘why’ is that I never thought I could be the kind of person who runs - as a teenager I never felt I belonged in the ‘sporty’ crowd, and I know my younger self would so proud of the limits I’ve pushed myself to as an adult. So I do it for her! Thank you to the running channel for being my constant source of motivation, and for making everyone feel like they belong in this community.

The feeling of being able to participate was the best, but I am honestly far away from being able to run one at this point. Hopefully I will be in 1 year from now. So for this year the goals are running a faster 5km (check), running a faster 10km (working on it) and next will be a half marathon. We will see how that goes.

Having to muster the willpower to push through physical feats challenges your fighting spirit so to finish your race & challenge your pace through hell & back, especially on no sleep, when all the energy is burnt up from within & you’re just stuck questioning what keeps you moving & how everything in your life has lead up to this moment is always a monumental, profound feeling. I lowkey wanted to cry when I volunteered for a half marathon event & I was cheering for the runners as a course marshal thinking of how all walks of life came together for this moment for their own reasons and causes with one goal in mind and a shared feeling of tenacity. Rain or shine, injury or not, old or young, jogging or walking, I still commend anyone who is willing to come to the event & try because not everyone will wake up that early, deal with the weather, pay the fees, etc.

Well done Sarah! I'm running London this year, with a charity spot of course because the ballot seems more difficult to win than the lottery!, and it's because of the TV. Sounds odd, but I religiously watched the London Marathon and always thought WOW, it's amazing that people can do this. I was very heavy, unfit, and had never been a runner, but all those marathon runners inspired me. Couch to 5k was my catalyst, then parkrun, and on my journey I learned just how amazing the running community is for helping you to achieve your goals whilst never judging you. Now I've run lots of 10k, and 12k races, a few half marathons, and I ran Chester Marathon in 2021. I think in my subconscious London Marathon has always been a bucketlist run for me, and so far my training is going well (10k PB yesterday - whoolp!), and on the afternoon of April the 23rd I'll be celebrating my new shiny medal with a well earned beer. Well done Sarah, you and everyone at the Running Channel are fantastic inspirations. Thanks!

Started running in 2020 and couldn’t run 100meters in the beginning. Never ever thought I would be saying I’ll be competing in my first full marathon. Running has gave me so much confidence and the whole running community is just so fantastic. When I joined my local park run I didn’t know anyone and now I volunteer to the point where they have asked me to carry out the RD role which whilst I was terrified in the beginning lol 😂 it’s so good to do and Saturday is my best day of the week to go and see my running family. I’m hoping for my first full marathon to go somewhere near 4hours but as long as I can get around I’ll be happy 👍

Great running Sarah!! Had me crying at the end as well....I really didn't get why people cry at the end of a marathon until I did one myself....

My “why?” - I have given this so much thought and it boils down to this - At 58 I have the opportunity to prove to myself I can do something I set my mind to do. No excuses. No one to blame. It’s on me to do it regardless of any obstacle or challenge thrown at me. Looking back I have had many accomplishments in life but I don’t remember any of them as clearly as those times when I didn’t give 100% and fell short on something. With a marathon there is no way to succeed without giving 100%.

Well done Sarah! The “why” for me is the sense of achievement afterwards - not just doing the marathon on the day but the commitment and will power to get through the training schedule in the cold wet and dark months before.

Well done! I don't think you can really appreciate the mix of emotions until you have been through it. All the best for your next one.

Congratulations Sarah!! That was amazing, ESPECIALLY given 2 days of little sleep and filming/ talking! The fan shoutouts must have felt awesome halfway around the world! The chat about pooping yourself was hysterical, especially given the poor guy in the background who looked like he was fighting the urge. 😆 I run marathons/ ultras for the same reason... as I get older, I feel a greater desire to push myself, to see what incredible things I can accomplish while I still can, so I can look back on my life and be proud of some crazy sht! I'm 45 in 2 weeks, and going for my first 50 miler this fall!

Amazing time, well done Sarah!:)) Congrats on your new PB!!! Currently binge-watching even more Running Channel Videos than usual since I broke my ankle last weekend (Weber B awaiting surgery) and can now forget about running any time soon, let alone what was supposed to be my first half-marathon race... The Rick-overy videos really cheered me up, I hadn't seen them yet even though I'm a die-hard fan. And to virtually experience yet another great race that you guys captured on camera just makes me all the more eager to finally get rid of the cast, start physio and finally start running again... I'm also a big fan of your podcast! Btw, could you guys maybe do a behind-the-scenes video about how you produce a video from idea/start to finish? I would find that really interesting:)) Thx so much for all you guys are doing, keep up the great work and stay awesome! x Chris

Totally inspiring. No Marathon for me this year, still working off an injury from 2019 but 2024 will be my sub-4 Marathon year. There, I said it.
