In Tokyo Japan, a single father Kenji balances his life between his job and his young daughter, Hina. Her new teacher, Mr. Sato, is a breath of fresh air in the rigid education system. As the cherry blossoms bloom, so does a tender romance between the two men. The only problem Kenji tries to keep the relationship a secret for Hina’s sake, and Mr. Sato (Ryu) feels like Kenji is stringing him along.

The story clearly takes place in Tokyo, and the lovers only move to the US five years later. The narrator doesn’t know that Sato should rhyme with the Spanish word gato. He also makes Ryu into a two syllable word, instead of a single syllable word. This is part of the local name for Okinawa (which is the Japanese name for the Ryuku Islands). There is another name Seito that would be pronounced as the narrator imagines. And variants which I won’t explore. Even so the narrator reads beautifully I have to say! Japanese attitudes to homosexuality can be contradictory, and so it’s not surprising that the lovers emigrated.
