Growing up, our next door neighbours were members of the local Yacht Club here in Toronto Ontario Canada, and I would hear them talking about boat related stuff, so this maintenance stuff didn't surprise me at all! Also, my Mom helps out her friend all the time who has a sail boat and it has to be hauled out of the water every winter. We're talking freshwater boats though, because we live around the Great Lakes. I thought it was so cool that you actually use the tide to give you access to the hull and the rudder etc. Much respect to you and the work you do!

There is still a careening stand at the town dock in Southwest Harbor. It doesn't get much use any more since the majority of boats haul out for at least part of the winter and do their bottom work when they are on the hard. Do you not have a cage for fuel economy reasons? Incidentally I was out in the Great Harbor of MDI this week and there is almost no gear there. I expect that most of the local fishers are working out past the Duck Islands. Last year there was very little gear in the Great Harbor (inside the Cranberries) until August and not all that much then. I also noticed that water temps were in the 53F range, which seems really high to me. I remember when water temps this time of year were in the low 40s at best.

Once the tide is out, seems you might could maybe scoot a couple more (maybe bumpered?) crabs under the lean side (and one or two on the off side, too) to improve safety. Better to do that step to reduce the risk.

I spent an entire summer with my Dad cleaning and prepping the bottom of his charter boat. Running a propane torch over the bottom to get the wood worms to back out enough to hook them and pull them out then scraping the bottom for barnacles and algae. After that we sanded or grinded the whole thing so we could get the old paint off and start new on the wood after we patched and caulked all the wood worm holes. After 2 months of repairing the hull we finally got to paint, 6 coats, 3 clear coats then the zinc paint. But on my when we finally finished it, just wow. Everything was new from outside in to the cushions, table and everything. She was capable of carrying 12 passengers in style and was able to cater to every whim. Very nice when done.
