Honestly, my favourite thing about Ghetsis has to be the fact that his cruelty is reflected in his pokemon. His teams are well suited to counter N, y'know, in case the boy gets any ideas about a revolution. Aside from his ace, he uses the most henchmen pokemon ever: Seismitoad and Bouffalant are the one getting off to diving head first into a wall; Bisharp,Drapion and Toxicroak are the ones that ran around with scissors back in the nurseries; Cofagrigus and Eelektross, suitable to instill trauma into anyone they get their pinchers on. And of course, Hydreigon, that is evolved ten levels early, wears a marble that gives it even more power in exchange for some life expectancy and the fact that this absolute hedge of a specimen knows max power Frustration, as in, it is so pissed off at its trainer, it can tear open a volcano. You just know Ghetsis was mean to this bunch, Bisharp just evolved at level 52, immediatly thrown into battle, Hydreigon was catching the end of that cane 6 times before it went to sleep and another 6 when it was supposed to get up, had to forcefully evolve to at least open its eyes up and gain a pair(?) of wings in case things got messy.And I just love that, I adore how much of a dickhead they made this pale, dried-lime-haired old man in every aspect.

Keep in mind, Volo isn’t as vile as Ghetsis or as methodical as Giovanni, but he accomplished something no other villain could, and that’s making a pact of equal partnership with a literal God in Giratina. Giratina hates Arceus for being banished and Volo wants to become a god in his own right. An alliance based on hating Arceus bringing these two together is exactly why he is a fantastic villain to me. He doesn’t control Giratina, they’re equal partners, and he didn’t even need to use mind control to do it, like how Ghetsis used Kyurem.

A partnership between these two makes them far more terrifying, in my opinion. Not only that, but it shows Giratina is cunning and willing to work with others to achieve its goal. That kinda, in a strange way, makes Giratina quite humble, ironically, seeing how his lore effectively makes him the satan of Pokémon.

At the end of black and white, when you’re in the Castle, one of the plasma scientists even mentions they took notice of how Team Rocket/Galactic/etc failed because they’re shady operations were far too much in the public eye and made sure they didn’t make the same mistakes. Team plasma doing all they’re scheming behind the scenes while maintaining their “humane activist group” image in the public eye is why Ghetsis’ plan is very impressive. Literally using public opinion and mob mentality to make people feel the need to release their Pokémon, all because the new champion N said so. It’s a damn good plan, ngl.

@@kjellandrebakken6775 Keep in mind as well that in the USUM Rainbow Rocket arc, the alternate universe Ghetsis blatantly states that he has plans to usurp and dispose of RR's Giovanni in order to take over as leader of Rainbow Rocket and amass even more power. Obviously he's evil, but more than that, he's arrogant and power hungry. Looking at their prime universe counterparts, it's my personal view that Giovanni would probably consider Ghetsis and his actions abhorrent and monstrous, going way too far according to Giovanni's own standards and crossing lines he never would. In fact, I think it would be fair to say Giovanni in the prime universe might try to destroy Ghetsis himself if they were to meet, even if he just wrote it off as "Having a maniac like that running around would be bad for business" as a reason. And you can bet that if RR's Ghetsis had gotten the chance to try and take down RR's Giovanni, he would've tried to have that monster of a Hydreigon turn Giovanni into roast chicken just to sadistically watch him suffer. The best fictional character I could compare Ghetsis to would probably be Killzone's Scolar Visari. In other words, a man who is at once a skilled persuasive speaker whilst also be a completely nepotistic, cruel, and spiteful dictator to those beneath him just because he can. Granted, I don't necessarily think Ghetsis's character has quite the same nuance or historical inspiration, but he does cut the figure of a ruthless dictator who only cares about power and his own ego at the expense of everyone and everything else.

Another thing about Ghetsis... his Hydreigon knows Frustration. His Hydreigon actively hates him. All this blustering about why Cyrus has a Crobat who evolves when they become good friends with their trainer must have really irritated Game Freak, because then they make a villain whose star Pokemon is seriously considering eating his trainer. Ghetsis' battle theme is also very in line with his character because if you listen close enough, you'll hear the cracking of whips.

Any ten year old worth their salt can utilize a Hydreigon with powerful special moves like Surf and Flamethrower, but it takes a special kind of monster to go out of their way make their Pokemon get a 102 for Frustration and actively maintain that. Let me put it this way: Winning makes your Pokemon like you more. Walking around with it makes it like you more. Feeding your Pokemon berries and vitamins makes it like you more. There are certain actions that lower friendship, but they are far fewer than the ones that improve it. What this means is even if the Hydreigon wins, it will be made to lose. If it eats, it's a diet of Herbal Medicine and for a carnivore, that's hell. If it ever gets remotely close to Ghetsis, it will be made to suffer.

I honestly believe, given that Giovanni at least has some lines he won't cross, that the prime universe version of Giovanni would try to destroy Ghetsis even if he just wrote it off as "Keeping that maniac alive would be bad for business" or some other such dubious reasoning. Truly, Ghetsis stands out to me as the most evil Pokemon evil team leader. For the most evil team or organization, I've got to go with Cipher in Coliseum and XD. Their cruelty, the crimes they commit on the regular against both other people and Pokemon, and just the sheer audacity they have in creating Shadow Pokemon (which literally have been made into vicious soulless killing machines by Pokemon standards) puts them above literally any main series evil team in my estimation.

I'd give Giovanni the #1 slot for what he did in Ultra Sun & Moon. The man rallied up all the other big bads from different universes and actually managed to convince all of these villains to work for him. His Mega Mewtwo alone would spark out of the rest of them so that probably helped. The AI professors were out here pouring all their resources and knowledge into breaking the dimensional barrier to achieve their goals. Giovanni went from being you're average mob boss to essentially, the king pin of the multiverse. And he STILL decides to just, have a bit of fun with it. Even after the game's done he's standing on a cliff thinking "Now who should I terroize next?" and teleports away. The man is still out there. The ONLY villain to canonically not be truly defeated. Absolute legend Giovanni.

The singular thing he obsessively cares about is the strength of pokemon and how to best achieve it, the player character proves that raising your pokemon with love and care while teaching them to be virtuous is objectively stronger than raising them villainously, so he becomes a virtuous person. He's never had any morals or any strong emotions, he's only motivated by his goal, an emotionless machine directed by its primary objective is perfect for a steel-type specialist like him.

Did you notice that Lysandre's "I was in two minds about it" referred to how his motivations are slightly different in X and Y and Gliscor being "a bit of a wild card" referred to how versatile it is? Considering that Hydreigon's favorite thing in life is wanton death and destruction, how poorly did Ghetsis treat that Pokemon that it _physically cannot hate him more_ (max power frustration)? I think a Hydreigon would bounce off of Ghetsis's psychopathy extremely well, but this Hydreigon despises him. Either Ghetsis owns the only pacifist Hydreigon in the Universe, or that poor Pokemon has been subjected to such horrific experiments and mistreatments that "E for everyone" can only have nightmares about it. Considering it evolved 10 levels early and is holding a Life Orb, I imagine it's unfortunately the latter, and that's terrifying.

In all fairness for Lusamine's obsession with Nihilego: It is NOT subtly stated in game that the venom of Nihilego causes all of your worst personality traits to be amplified to 12. Her villain-to-redemption story works best in Sun/Moon, when her motivation is "I became obsessed with the creatures that took my husband and the exposure to the venom ramped my obsession up by 500% and separating and HEALING me of this venom turned me into a better person." Rather than the nonsense pulled in Ultra (Ultra would have worked better if Lusamine was just shown as a bit too focused in her work and ABSENT in her personal life, rather than toxic for seemingly no reason)
