PLEASE READ! Hi, thank you to everyone who let me know about Mindy Kaling. I had no idea about all of the sexual harassment and a shit ton of other incidents of awful behavior by her. I’m shocked by what I found out and disgusted by it all. I’ll be doing an authors behaving badly on her. Thanks everyone for letting me know! Also apparently Meryl Streep is also a shit human. She supported Harvey Weinstein??? Bitch what???

Yep, she retweeted a JK Rowling tweet about being fine with people not liking her bc she has a lot of money. Plus the ableism, transphobia, and showing "tastefully covered by hair and soap" underage teenager of the Velma show. I remember people hated a Holocaust antisemitic joke in Never Have I ever (directed by Mc toward the love interest).

This is why I have stopped even looking at awards when buying books... I just read the blurb, read reviews from average readers and hope for the best. But awards feel meaningless at this point with how inaccurate they are and how many of them are paid for.
@ArcticWolfe84
@ArcticWolfe84 Жыл бұрын
When I was first trying to branch out into new genres, I used awards lists as a way of helping decide what to buy. Worst decision I could have made. I don't think I necessarily hated *every* choice that I made this way, but the results were certainly skewed that way.

@@ArcticWolfe84 couldn't have said it better myself. Not to say that all books with awards are bad - pretty much every single one of my favourite books have won awards - but I feel like buying something just because a panel (that, again, was probably paid off) says so is the wrong way to do it

Definitely would love to hear your views on the allegations made towards Mindy Kaling of non-consensual kissing, internalized racism showing through her writing, and like... all of the new Velma show. Maybe not really a case of "authors behaving badly" but definitely at least a case of "authors behaving weirdly"? I just really enjoy hearing your takes and explanations of media stuff, it helps me understand better

I can totally relate to that hot sauce thing because my grandmother was and still is like that. If she finds out you like one thing, she'll decide to make it your entire personality. There was a phase of my childhood where my entire room was decked out in horse stuff. I had a horse calendar, horse books, toy horses, horse figurines, clothes with horses on them, a "How to Draw Horses" book, photos of horses, and why? I wasn't even that obsessively into horses. She saw me with a vintage Breyer horse I got from my other grandma, asked me if I like horses, and I said yes because I'm an animal lover and I like most animals, and she decided this meant my favorite animal was horses. Dogs are my favorite animal. Horses ain't even in my top ten.

Jenny Lawson´s books really helped me out of tight spots again and again. Her first book had me in tears at the story of the "magical" squirrel her father brought home one night. I tried reading the passage to a friend and failed because we broke out in laughter over and over. Her stories felt so close to home, concerning medical and mental problems that I always pick the three books up from time to time. Her first one will always be my favourite but I love the following two as well.i

The Jenny Lawson book sounds funny, I'm definitely going to read it! 😁 Also the Last Black Unicorn sounds awful, I can't believe someone with a conscious can read that part of the book and say 'yup totally 5 stars!' I can only assume they thought it was a girl boss moment or the fact that she's a minority gives her the right to say awful things about other people even if they too have probably faced a lot of discrimination.

I used to love Tiffany Haddish but like the more I find out about her I'm just convinced her childhood messed her up and she just thinks a lot of things she experiences and do are normal or funny little anecdotes to tell everyone. Like, I'm not even defending her behavior or saying this as an excuse. I genuinely think something isn't clicking in her mind that her idea of normal isn't normal at all. It's fucked up. Love your chart explaining what is and isn't funny! I don't know why people still think ableism makes good humor. I also think you're absolutely right that the books that win are often not funny but are good in their own right and were really only picked because of the author/s. I couldn't get through The Last Black Unicorn once it got to the part about Rosco. It was absolutely horrifying. I enjoyed Lauren Graham's book when I read it. I loved Gilmore Girls but refuse to revisit it because I have a feeling it wouldn't hold up. Your public service (reading The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo) is much appreciated. I cringe whenever she opens her mouth. I think the episode of Always Sunny where Dee gets her "big break" in standup, which is pretty much making fun of Amy Schumer's "comedy," sums up why she isn't funny.

I realized seeing your actual breakdowns I recognize a lot more authors that I initially thought😅 I’m bad with names so I’m blaming it on that, I actually think I knew all the authors at least in a generic “they’re famous” way. What I take away from this is celebrities who are known for being in “light” shows and movies, are comedians, or are known for being in comedy shows/movies who write books usually win that year, whether or not they’re a genuinely funny writer or wrote a funny book. Being a humourous person, or someone who’s in humourous movies/shows doesn’t mean you can write a funny book but it seems like they are just given a golden ticket.

There's so many different types of comedy - written, stand-up, scripted tv/movies, casual/everyday, etc. - and absolutely no guarantee that being good at one form of comedy is going to translate into being good in any other form of comedy. Like, I know I can be funny in a conversational setting, but putting me up on a stage to do stand-up would only lead to a positive outcome if your actual goal had been to see me hyperventilate and pass out in a puddle of my own pee. I often feel like that's the equivalent of what we're seeing when presented with a comedian or comic actor's book. Jenny and Allie, on the other hand, really are masters at the kind of comedy that lends itself to being published in book form (or as an online blog, which is where I was first introduced to their stuff).

Awww, Broken by Jenny Lawson is one of my therapist's favorite books! She's been trying to get me to read it for months (I actually have it but didn't get very far yet) and this review convinced me to finally go for it ❤️ though I might get the audio version because that sounds extra hilarious!

Idk if it’s true but from what I’ve seen in her interviews Mindy Kaling has kissed her costars in a way they didn’t consent to, especially in situations where she’s the boss and picked costars based on wanting to kiss them.

read allie brosh's newer book!!! it's soooo good, even better than hyperbole and a half, though it's also big on grief so be prepared. i loved it so deeply.

So many time when people talk of past relationships and make fun of the person or are horrible to that person I’m always like. …did you know you can simply CHOOSE NOT TO DATE PEOPLE???? Like if you were soooo bothered by his disabilities.. don’t date him? Like. What??

When I read Hyperbole and a Half for the first time, I started while reading chips. I didn't make it past the introduction I was spitting my chips out and had to put them away. 🤣

If you haven't read Allie Brosh's followup book, you really should. It was really great with a solid blend of funny and real, very hard hitting emotional stuff.

I can't remember if it was Amy Poehler's book or Tina Fey's (or possibly both?) that rubbed me the wrong way when they inserted a random chapter about doing charity in "Africa" (no actual country mentioned or issue discussed - just doing a generic celebrity ambassador trip to Africa). It was so out of place - almost as though their editor said, 'Hey, maybe mention something about charity so you look like a good person?'' But it was written in such a robotic, bland way with no passion or heart behind it. It seemed so insincere and 'Hollywood.' Anyway, your reviews are spot on. I've read most of these books and, god, they are not funny. Loved Allie and Jenny's books though.

Comedians seem to be put in the comedy category no matter what kind of book they write. I don't understand it, but that seems to be what's going on. "Jesus was my hot sauce."--you need that on a mug or a t-shirt. Seriously. It's hilarious.

@@ReadswithRachel Whoo! I have rarely laughed as hard reading a book as I did Jenny Lawson's, I love her sense of dry/dark humor. You know, the kind that makes some people look deeply concerned because they have never been a member of the Suffer Squad. I haven't read Ali Wong's book, but I really enjoy her stand up so I guessed on that. But I have read Aliie Brosh and my god I am gleeful that there are other people who are as much a weirdness magnet with a dubious sense of self-preservation as I am. My hot sauce was not spiritualism, but pretending I liked horror movies then not sleeping for days at a time. Since it would obviously benefit Future!Alisha if I just kept up the bit. Yikes.

This video may have been funnier than most of the books you read. I can’t believe you all had to suffer through this but I thank you for it lol. You would have dieeeddd seeing Tiffany Haddish perform her standup where she talks about Rodney. It was so bad! Sooo bad!! Idk if you’ve read other Jenny Lawson books but I think you’d enjoy some of her other stuff too. She’s actually funny lol

19:04 I mean, I kind of get where she's coming from with the old lady in her head. My dead mom's Voice of Judgement lives in my head and any time I see something she would have commented on, I hear her voice and I have to consciously work to get past it. It's really frustrating.
