I had no idea that there was a book of Pan's Labyrinth, but the movie is incredible. The way that its politics interact with the archaic, animistic mythology of the labyrinth plot is just absolutely brilliant. Anything that deals in both Spanish anarchism and paganistic nature spirituality is an immediate yes from me.

I guess that’s why I enjoyed it cause i took it up after some heavy heavy reading and just needed something light and plain to cleanse my palette. That or I just cry easily! 😂

Haha I bawled to this book also. Like I was watching One Liter of Tears. Idk, after experiencing the deaths of loved ones in one year, on the year I was to turn 18 (and that's supposed to be a big thing), coming into peace that I won't be celebrating it with my grandparents guess it opened the dam.. also I can't express myself really well.. so I guess that's an outlet also 😂

About "Before the coffee gets cold", the book is actually based on a play! Which can explain why the descriptions are not as good/the rules are repeated a lot/... The writing is also very typically japanese (very similar to Kawakami, or Yu Miri), which is definitely not for everyone, and takes a while to get used to. I think the biggest problem those books have (as someone who loved all of them) is that sometimes the translation feels a little clunky and not quite smooth, but mostly because of the very different conventions between English/Western/Eurocentric literature and Japanese literature!

I’m listening to you talk about the Iliac Crest and I’m wondering how the translator treated the “gender in language” theme since, as a Spanish speaker, I know this is sooo relevant and truee, but knowing that English doesn’t have like “gender-assigned” articles such as “la” and “el”, I’m not sure how she could’ve portrayed it. I’ll be reading to find out though:)

Finally someone who feels the same as I do about Before the Coffee Gets Cold! The one thing I remember about this book is the extremely annoying repetitions. It wasn't only the rules, it was also random words, like "clock" being repeted 3 or 4 times in a 2 lines sentence. Or "the woman in the white dress" that appeared who knows how many times. It actually made me angry. (I later compared it with the French translation and there were fewer repetitions in that one.)

Pan’s Labyrinth is on Netflix for the US right now! I might be for Canada as well or you can use a VPN 😊 The story does take more of a look at the state of the country after the Spanish civil war more than the fantastical elements. However, I personally feel the movie pulled it off perfectly by intertwining the two plots just enough to keep your interest. I am 100% biased as I adore Guillermo Del Toro but definitely check it out!

Another amazing wrap up! My favorite read of the month was Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stewart, which imo deserves every ounce of praise its received. This novel is an intimate look into the Bain family in working class Glasgow in the 1980s with the fundamental struggles of class, patriarchy, homophobia, and addiction running through its heart. It is a story of love (tested) and family and loss and coming of age through the Thatcher years. This book will certainly stay with me for a long time and I would recommend to those who appreciate a story of tested love!

the iliac crest sounds so interesting and right up my alley!! would be a perfect book for the season, not sure if illbe able to get to it, but at the very least it's on my tbr. i so appreciate finding out about books that aren't just the next ya/ fantasy series and already discussed everywhere (saying that as an avid ya fantasy reader) i really liked the coffee gets cold but ig you have to be in the right mindset for it. fully agree with the writing, it's nothing grand, but i found it a cozy read

The best Phantom of the Opera retelling is *Maskerade* by Sir Terry Pratchett. :) It both parodies and homages Phantom and general muder mysteries, and has funny moments and jokes interspersed with genuinely deep and moving emotion. I finished two good classics recently, *Jane Eyre* and *Frankenstein. Frankenstein* especially was such a treat- the language was lovely, and there was so much more nuance to both Victor and the Monster than you usually get in adaptations.

Pan's Labyrinth has been a fave movie of mine since I was young :D I read the book this year and it was enjoyable for me but I think it had to do with loving the story already and I could see it play out in my mind I read Beowulf for the first time this year and loved it! I have an e-copy of Infinite Country and it sounds amazing

Your observation, that it lacks magical element, makes a lot of sense, but Isn’t that (the lack of the magical) what the story is all about. . . well, the story might be a little different in the book, idk. I recommend the movie if you are okay with creepy monsters and gores.

I recommend The Invited, I'm really enjoying just the whole mystery, and the characters, the setting and the feeling of the book. I think it's my favorite book for October so far. I'm only halfway through it though, so I've still have to get through the rest to see how it actually is.

Thank you for recommending The Iliac Crest by Cristina Rivera Garza. It is a challenge for the reviewer to move beyond superlatives. The most haunting review I can remember appeared in a biography of Malcolm Lowry. An American reviewer said he had read *Under the Volcano* for the second time, and could not escape the pull of the book's tidal current. *I am this book's fool,* he said, and the tragic fate of the Consul in Mexico remained in his mind like the evening star. The last sentence of your foreword to *The Phantom of the Opera* (about the cellar) caused a tidal shift in my mind like the Lowry review.

Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favourite movies, if not my absolute favourite, and i read the novelization after watching the movie and it really worked for me! The movie does feel a lot more whimsical tho, but at it's heart it remains an anti war movie. It's also part of Del Torro's trilogy of films about the Spanish civil war, so I do believe that the fantastical elements are more so a framing device.

“Before the coffee gets cold”: You’ve captured my thoughts exactly!!!! Such a disappointment. On Netflix Japan there’s a movie ( called Cafe Funiculi Funicula) based on this book and its sequel. They got rid of the problematic points and changed slightly some of the stories and surprisingly it’s much better than the book.

Pan's labyrinth was my fav movie when I was like 5? 6? and to this day (i'm 18) I still love it and it amazes me how somehow I always forget if the pan is bad or good so i really enjoy the thrill of not knowing what is going to happen. The movie is in spanish but ofc u can watch it with subtitles... give it a try!
