I love how rare these books actually are and those covers aren't as different as the US covers they're just zoomed in on which is kinda cool. These books I remember the ad was 2000 times the scares, which was iconic, but the books themselves were odd.

I just want to point out a few things. When you brought up Are You Terrified Yet?, you said “prank after prank after prank”. Well, they were actually dares for the spider jar and the first bout in the funeral parlor. Not pranks. Craig was honest in his monologue about himself as a scaredy cat, and withheld information to the others so he wouldn’t go from being the new kid to being the new kid being the punching bag like he was at his old school. Most people who don’t like the book actually take more issue with Amy which I get. Because while she’s a blind fan of Craig, she also basically amplifies the situation for him tenfold. I think Are You Terrified Yet is the most likely story to happen, it’s a coming of age great story with an honest internal monologue for the main character. And a victorious ending getting revenge on the kids at his new school that pushed him through the story. It sure is better than wet fart books like Revenge R Us, Full Moon Fever, Be Afraid Be Very Afraid. Which is also funny to not, Be Afraid Be Very Afraid most likely was written by 3 children winning a Series 2000 contest lol. Other than that hot take, I think your ranking was cool and felt honest to your taste. I’m curious to think your thoughts on the Cry Of The Cat episode because it is pretty different from the book.
@GavinReadsItAll
@GavinReadsItAll 2 жыл бұрын
Ahh I definitely phrased the “prank after prank” thing wrong for Are You Terrified Yet. However some of the dares were pranks (such as Travis pretending to be a dead body to scare him) so I wasn’t completely wrong 😂 I also didn’t take issue with Craig lying about being brave, as I got he was worried about what happened at his old school, I only took issue when he lied to Amy about being a champion at a sport, which I know is very nit-picky of me. I think people who read Goosebumps are after different things - I’m after real scares, which I do mention a lot in the video. Are You Terrified Yet is, as you said, just a whole load of dares, and so it is my least favourite type of Goosebumps book.

Series 2000 getting another reviewer makes me happy. The series is really interesting, as a whole I rather like or in the least appreciate it for having all this gore and experimental aspects. I find the middling books more disappointing due to wasting great ideas but that makes me like like them more like the middling books in other GB series, at least to me. Like, Scream School admirably tries more of a story about father/son thing, gets bogged down in fake outs but i respect it. My only 2 full duds were Revenge r Us and Full Moon Fever. The former is a mean mess with icky stuff that is just ugh, the latter is a mess with no real direction but a few fun moments. Fright Camp is meh and the rest are middling at worst, but mostly fine. The "pretty good "ones fare especially well here. The 3 i rared higher than 7 are Graveyard Ghouls, I Am Your Evil Twin, and Jekyll and Heidi. Special mentions to Are you Terrfied Yet (I cosign the comment from Compltionist), Slappy's Nightmare (ending is weak the rest is pretty good, better than Bride easily which was eh, if only for that love tap, yikes), Creature Teacher and Brain Juice. The latter is one Stine says is one of his favorites and for him i bet it's due to the comedy but I like how smart it is, no joke. Essays could be written on how it explores how intelligence is treated on both sides, more clever than i expected with this premise, another very respectable one. Stine was feeling the heat by the end and he didn't renew their contract, due to legal battles going on. You cahn tell he was feeling the heat as the last like 5 have some that really feels like running on fumes, especially Be Afraid and Full Moon Fever. So it's good that it ended when it did, although one was planned but canned last minute, but was published as a stand alone called the Adventures of Shrinkman. So yeah there's that lol, cool video. Hyped for HorrorLand, those are a wild and decent experiment.

First off, RL Stine said he probably wouldn't be back at the end of your video. You really should ... convince him... someway... to change his mind. Great video as always. The only thing I have to say is I have an almost zero tolerance for reading about animal abuse/killing (I can't deal with it in movies either). I would rather deal with the unreliable narrator.

I feel like reminding people not to give chocolate to dogs is just a right of passable of reviewing goosebumps books. I feel like it is a very niche gap of knowledge RL Stine has and I almost feel it is deliberate.

If I could rewrite any of these stories as like... actual horror stories, Id pick horrors of the black ring. So much can be done with thr concept of an evil ring. Considering the title is "horrors" you could make it a mini anthology even. Point is, the ring cpuld be haunted by a spirit that only the wearer can see. The ring could attracted bad luck and has a history of ending the lives of its wearers. It could put you in a trance and try and take over your mind (like in the og) but it makes you do dangerous things to yourself where people are locking you away and having to restrain you. If the ring is stuck contemplate removing the whole finger, have moments of going to more and more extremes to remove it. Even if some of those are more cliche ideas, cliches can still be good if well written. So much potential...

Slappy’s Nightmare would have driven me up the wall with that ending. When you said the title, I was thinking, “Oo! We get to see what Slappy’s afraid of and get like a house of horrors scene with Slappy facing all of his fears. But it being a dream, I would have chucked it out the window.
@GavinReadsItAll
@GavinReadsItAll 2 жыл бұрын
Your idea for Slappy’s Nightmare is infinitely more better than what we got. Most of the Series 2000 books had rather misleading titles and covers, and at this point I think fanfiction would be better for the Goosebumps series than what Stine actually put out 😭

The thing is…you can tell when Stine is actually trying and when he is just phoning it in to meat a quota. The problem with these long running franchises is that it’s really really hard to keep things fresh. I think Goosebumps should have been a 5-10 book series at the most.

I didn't read these books. But the one with the crow on the cover and the abusive brother you asked what's the point If the sister also got punished too? There's a difference between standing up for your self and being horrible back.
