I think A Little Life is written really well, but I'm honestly always a little surprised at how it's so many people's favourite book. It's one of my favourite books because the exploration of trauma and how positive relationships can help us cope/overcome it is just masterful. For me, it has always been a book about friendship and how it can be the light that guids us out of the darkest times. It IS extremely sad (although "sad" doesn't even cover the despair and helplessness I felt reading it) and there are literally trigger warnings for everything you can possibly think of in this book (maybe except for animal cruelty) but I say it's worth the read if you think you can take it.

It's... a lot to take in emotionally speaking. It's beautifully written, but extremely overwhelming.
@Anastasia_14673 жыл бұрын
I think that the amount of suffering experienced by the characters in this book is unrealistic tbh and it feels very manipulative. It covers very sensitive topics, but it doesn't do them justice, it does it mainly for shock value. I mean how many times can one person be raped by different people in their life statistically? In this book it happens way too often, not to mention other troubles.

I read The Underground Railroad in a lit class and we talked a lot about how the monotony of the writing was the POINT of the book, because we often talk about these topics in a way that's so dramatic and outrageous when in reality, slavery was happening everywhere in the USA. It's not a big special story, it is a version of a story that was happening to every enslaved person in America. I do agree that other books about the topic that do enhance and tell the stories in strong detail are important and can be more entertaining to read. But I think it's also cool/important to read about it in a way that really enhances (for me, anyway) the idea that it wasn't a special or singular story, it was a common one.
@jack_edwards3 жыл бұрын
I would agree if it was fact-based, but (for me) the author imagining what it would be like if the underground railroad was an actual locomotive takes this from an authentic slave narrative to speculative fiction. it was the lack of depth in the characters that made me not enjoy this book!
@ellenlovre3 жыл бұрын
@@jack_edwards wow ty for responding! I definitely agree it's a weird mix between historical and speculative that I was not vibing with at times. I do think the characters not having much personality was intentional, but that also makes it very boring to read :/

You should check out some bulgarian literature! Some classics are "under the yoke" by Ivan Vazov (aka one of THE most significant pieces of literature in bulgarian history), the peach thief by Emillyan Stanev, the iron candlestick by Dimitar Talev. I absolutely adored the iron candlestick, I literally finished it two days ago and it was so good! It's about the struggle for political and religious independence of the Bulgarians in the early 19th century (and there is a romeo-and-juliet type background love story sooooo)
@rayaanne17193 жыл бұрын
um would reading the books in english take away from the experience of reading them in their original language or are there good editions that translate these books beautifully? bcs i've experienced reading arabic works translated to english and they didn't do it for me like in i enjoyed reading the original work wayyyy more
@junnapiskuliyska7163 жыл бұрын
@@rayaanne1719 hmmmm that's a really good question. I haven't read a lot of bulgarian books translated in english, because bulgarian literature rarely gets translated in english tbh (except for the really popular books). With that in mind, I don't think that the difference would be that big. You do need some historical context for "under the yoke" and "the iron candlestick" tho. Bulgaria was under the ottoman rule for about 5 centuries and they (and the greeks, but that's another subject for another day) really tried to remove any trace of our culture. Till a certain point, church ceremonies were held in greek, not bulgarian. You have these rich people ( I have no idea how they called them in the english translation but the чорбаджии in bulgarian) that often sided with the turks aka betrayed the nation. For additional context - bulgaria gets the desired independent church in 1870, and then in 1878 bulgaria gets freed from the ottoman rule with the help of russia (I am not just saying this for fun, there is a lot of foreshadowing for this event in the iron candlestick). I think that's it. In those novels, the Bulgarian language is a bit difficult to read, even for me, but they probably simplified it a lot for the translations.
@junnapiskuliyska7163 жыл бұрын
@@rayaanne1719 if you are interested in reading these books, I encourage you to quickly google the bulgarian national revival and the fight for independence, simply because those books kinda expect you to know what is happening? I watched this video and went back to pick Queenie. And it just shattered my heart. I loved how relatable the mc was and how authentic the writing felt. It has been such a long time since I have read a book and could not stop crying. Thank You for your review❤❤❤

With me it’s both I love complicated and detailed characters and a very complicated and detailed plot, I don’t prefer anything over the other

A little life is definitely not my favorite in terms of story, but in terms of literary styles I learned a lot from Hanya Yanagahira. Her impactful writing coupled with her mental caliber and strength in penning down such a woeful tale is something I greatly admire.

i read “underground to canada” in grade 5 for school and it was really well written. you get attached to the characters while learning so much about that time. would definitely recommend this book as an alternative to “the underground railroad”.

Trick Mirror *definitely* peaked on the first essay. I've finished the third essay and that took so much effort to finish because I could not be arsed, I was so bored. Personally, the writing was difficult to understand at times and it made me question if I was dumb or not lol

First off, I love your channel! Second, if you want to read more Stephen King, may I suggest "The Stand," which King himself considers one of his favorites; his latest book "Billy Summers;" and "It." (I am a huge Stephen King fan and own almost every book he's ever written but these three are phenomenal.) Keep those videos coming - you are amazing!
