You know, I think the most depressing realization I've come to about this book is *why* it's so sparsely written and everything outside of acts of hate, terror, and fascism are underdeveloped. It's not just because the author is a bad writer, it's because the characters, the organizations, even the love story, none of that actually matters. None of that is why this book was written, and it's not written to be a novel. It's an instruction book disguised as a novel, all it's meant to do is teach you how to be a good little Nazi for the good little Nazi cause. Even the love story itself is probably just a "pass on your good Aryan genes" lesson rather than any actual investing storytelling.

I get the feeling this novel was written to appeal to those people who are more than willing to murder and kill and terrorize and who, after the nastiness is complete, will suddenly be hunted down and killed off so this magical Nazi world doesn't have to deal with the damaged people this creates and to provide emotional distance from all the death and destruction so they can play ignorant to it. Right up until they create another subgroup to slaughter for fun. This whole thing is nothing but a pathetic circus of death and destruction formulated by awful, awful people without humanity.

I think this book is important not because of the message it tries to convey, but because it gives us a glimpse into how these sorts of people think. The fact that their ideal world is a literal dystopia and they don't even realize it is very telling of the cognitive dissonance that comes with holding such a twisted system of beliefs.
@ELIAHAVAH2 жыл бұрын
You know, I used to wonder why there was such a strong, consistent attitude towards might-makes-right, victory-at-all-costs, wanting-to-be-the-oppressor thinking among White nationalists. At first, I used to think it was because of their racist beliefs - any racist belief system whose end goal is ultimately genocidal must inure its followers to violence, death, and tyranny, and instill hard-heartedness and stubborn, worshipful commitment to nothing less than total victory; the alternative is the racist worldview's eradication by all thinking, loving humans. You could see it as a fertilization technique for creating terrorists and ultimately loyal fascists. However, I have since come to realize that, in fact, I had mixed around cause and effect. The ruthless mindset is not imposed from top-down by the leaders of the movement to control their followers; rather, it is the soil that builds the entire fascist ideology from the ground up. Fascists are people who desire control. Fascists are people who fantasize about violence and oppressing others. It is the mindset which then constructs racism in order to provide a target for the preëxisting hateful impulse to be directed towards. Jean-Paul Sartre recognized this in his great philosophical dissections of fascism, and that is why he famously said: “*If the Jew did not exist, the anti-Semite would invent him.*” It is the same today as then. Fascists, cryptofascists, and fascist sympathizers always need someone to hate - be it Jews, Black people, immigrants, socialists, Muslims, gay people, trans people. The hate is preëxisting. The dominationist worldview is preëxisting, in those who become fascists as a result of it. The targets of the hate are then subsequently chosen.

The most striking thing about this book to me (the racial violence I expected) was the fact the future they imagine is a horrifying, toxic, post-nuclear hellscape. It's not this paradise that's a version of an imaginary and idealized version 1950s America with everyone having a white picket fence and tucking their shirt in, its more like a racist Mad Max. The idea that they love the war itself, that they prefer the nuclear wasteland to living on the same planet as other races is truly terrifying, because its a zealotry that truly can't be reasoned with because it is without reason. I honestly think you could make a barely edited version of this into a movie and it would come off as an anti-fascist film to the average viewer.

The thing that gets me the most is the ending. You would think that, in an escapist novel written by a white supremacist, for white supremacists, the ending would see the rise of a white supremacist utopia. One where all the white people would live in freedom and harmony and all the non-whites are either displaced, or more likely, dead. Instead, you get a world that no rational white person would ever want to live in. The author paints a nuclear hellscape as being a good thing, literally because hey, at least all the people we hate are dead. The fact that these people see the literal destruction of the world as a win condition really tells you all need to know about them.

Or its meaning is being intentionally misinterpreted. Something to note about William Luther Pierce is that he was avidly opposed to cartoonish 'activism' by people in goofy brown shirt costumes with swastika tattoos. Yes Piece was a racist and political dissident, but he was actually a pretty sensible person when it came to his approach to the problem. He actively kept his organization away from other groups that presented themselves as cartoonish skinheads. To quote the man himself "There may come a time when our organization requires security forces, but what will distinguish that force is professionalism in practice and appearance, not beer bellies and tattoos." This was attached to a longer address he was delivering about 'the movement' and his desire for his organization to be separate from the broader 'movement' which he saw as a problem in terms of presentation and direction. He had stated multiple times that fighting in the streets and so on would not accomplish anything. He criticized many people as hobbyists and people who didn't actually engage with the ideology seriously, but instead just wanted some politically incorrect misadventure.

In order for this book's dark magic to work, you have to already be the kind of person who can read the "honky cat" part and find it plausible, without thinking you have to hit up your best friend and be like "Yo, I just found the BEST name for a bluegrass band!"

@Kathy Kat Hmm I always saw US Schools to be a better Breeding Ground for Fascists than 4chan. Just my Opinion tho. Based on so many People saying, that the US is the best Country on the Planet and also Children being indoctrinated already at a very young Age. Maybe you don't believe me. Maybe you say, that it's not like that at all. But keep this in Mind : The Nazis did not rise, because they thought, that Germany and Austria were the shittiest Countries. They believed, that Germany and Austria together would be just like the US. A military Superpower with a high Dose of Propaganda and Indoctrination.
@raptorexo50293 жыл бұрын
@Kathy Kat Yeah I agree with you there. And let's be real. Patriotism and Nationalism are like Genius and Madman. The Border is very small. A Genius becomes a Madman easily. Just like Patriotism can become Nationalism very fast. I mean I'm from Austria and the Main Focus of our History Class revolves around the 2nd World War (cause we were the Nazis alongside Germany) and it was very clear, that the Nazi Regime began as a seemingly good, patriotic Party to vote for. When their Power was ensured, Patriotism became Nationalism very fast. Alongside Propaganda and false Flag Attacks to get the German and Austrian People in Defense Mode. Yes, the 2nd World War started as a "Defensive War", where the Nazis faked an Attack by Poland. And the Propagandaminister of Germany back then said, that the People don't want War. They will always protest War. Unless they are the Ones attacked. Then they will scream for War. And coming to American Education, that's actually comparable to the German and Austrian Education back then. Germany and Austria were portrayed as this almost mystified Nation, that is better than the Others. Germany was Nr. 1 in everything. That's what they believed. And what is a pretty common believe in the US ? Exactly, the Belief, that the US is the best Nation on the Planet. Glorified in Games and Movies and Novels. I mean, it's just some very concerning Parallels to what was going on back then. Germany and Austria focused a lot on Prevention after the 2nd World War. The Premise was "Never ever again". But the Way Things are, there is always somebody, who doesn't learn from the Mistakes of Others and repeats them.

One thing that struck me most about the Turner Diaries is how much the author loved the idea of taking revenge on women. The other thing was how unattractive it made the life of a neo-Nazi seem. You'd think that the author would present a life filled with good comrades, excitement and adventure, being attractive to women, overcoming the people who humiliate you, making noble speeches and having everyone cheer you...nope. From memory, it seemed like a joyless grind, like working a dead-end factory job except the factory is killing people. The main character seems to have no friends, and not even any emotions except grim satisfaction at having killed someone. edit: I didn't remember Katherine. But that's partly because the author is clearly not very interested in her.

It's in reference to Hitler's pseudo-theory about bloodlines and their role in sustaining a nation. Basically, Hitler believed only Aryan bloodlines had the potential to build functional nations, and non-Aryan bloodlines were contaminants that dilute that potential. Thus, the worst contaminant is the bloodline that could never make a nation of its own, which Hitler identified as the Jews. He thought Capitalism was designed to fail, leading to mass starvation, leading to a Bolshevik revolution, leading to de-nationalization, leading to race-mixing, thus diluting Aryan blood to non-functional levels and ending all civilization. Therefore, he deduced that Jews are pre-programmed to burn that candle from both ends, Capitalist and Bolshevik. TIK has a number of in-depth videos on this if you're interested. Full disclosure, I'm not a Nazi _(I'm jewish, in fact)_ and neither is TIK.

When the Space Marines arrived to collect the taxes and saw what the Quintarchs of Lastrati had done, they declared it was a disgusting waste of human life and put the Quintarchs in death row for being evil assholes. Imagine how evil you have to be, to be _too evil for Warhammer 40k_

is that true? If so, it's neat how the setting acknowledged that despite constantly using it as a meme, the Imperium would hate Nazis
@alisonpurgatory852 жыл бұрын
@@syppy7416 Not really, they'd just think they're inefficient. (And they were, the nazis love the propaganda and fiction that paints them as orderly. Historically they were fucking messes in government). There's a bit more to the Lastrati story. The space marines that went to the planet are from the Black Templars chapter. They're some of the most fanatical of the already fanatical space marines, known for their commitment to genetic purity and for their hatred of all 'aberrations against the emperor' i.e. mutants and such, but also psykers who the Imperium needs to function. They're quite counterproductive to the Imperium actually. Anyway when they get to Lastrati, they are initially 'welcomed as exemplars of genetic supremacy' and they find the faith of Lastrati admirable, but find that Lastrati goes to far- as in uses alien technology (a no-no the imperium considers far worse than eugenics) acquired illegally through Rogue Traders, to make things like genetic diseases to weed out the 'impure', which they tested in viral (concentration) camps on live subjects, and they also fire-bomb entire continents. So, even the Black Templars, who are super nazis obsessed with racial purity themselves, find this a bit too much- but their objections in the story start when they see the alien technology obtained illegally and also blood rituals that resembled 'worship of the ruinous powers'. So it's not even that they object to the ideology of the Quintarchs of Lastrati- as mentioned before, they were initially welcomed and pleased, but it's that they used alien and 'heretical' methods to do it, and also overdid it. The Imperium does not like the waste of human life, because they consider human life a resource to be spent wisely rather than something morally valuable like we do. Lastrati was killing too many potential workers, soldiers, servitors, food, etc. That's what the Imperium means by 'waste of human life'. So yeah, the Black Templars liberated a bunch of 'viral camps' and as OP said, put the Quintarchs on death row for being evil assholes. Also, the Templars were easily able to beat the 'divine army' of the Quintarchs because their commitment to genetic purity reduced the divine army's numbers. The Templars accepted no surrender and wiped them out to a man. And then, a century later, the Marshal leading the purge of Lastrati (who might I remind you wiped the Lastrati army and rulers out to a man) was was 'deemed by his peers to show a lack of determination and ruthlessness required of a High Marshal' and his appointment to the position of Marshal was repealed. So it's less 'too evil for 40k' and more like 'even a fictional hyper-dystopia that takes fascism to satirical extremes would view the ending to the Turner Diaries as stupid and wasteful while not disagreeing with the underlying ideology' The setting in official depictions has sadly cut back a bit on the satire and critique of fascism, but stories like that of Lastrati from the earlier editions are a great example of how the setting shows and comments on the excesses of fascism. Phrases like 'The Imperium would hate nazis' and stuff like that makes us forget that the Imperium was made as a satire and critique of fascism and other totalitarian regimes, and no misguided cash-in video games that code them as good guys will change that. Also a Black Templar profile picture is often a red flag, it's a common one for nazi 40k fans.

@@Dorkeydaze the Lastrati story is from the 4th edition Black Templars codex and a 2005 issue of White Dwarf, the magazine that the company that makes 40k publishes. 4th edition stuff is my favorite since it went harder on the dystopian satire and less on the power fantasy that nazis themselves often use as cover and catharsis - which is sadly the majority of the setting now in its 9th edition

Luckily, I had people in my life that cared about me and recognized the things I was beginning to say and think would lead me down a very bad path. They told my parents they weren't comfortable with me being around their kids (basically my best and some of my only friends at the time) and that was a huge wakeup call to me, not because I realized it was hateful and misguided; I didn't come to recognize that until a few years later, but that I was being a fucking weirdo and people did not like to associate with me when I acted and thought the way I did. I turned 19 a few months ago and I am a completely different person now because someone cared enough about me to actually go and say something to my parents about it. Keep an eye on the younger people in your life, that's when you are most susceptible to these kinds of ideologies and the people spewing this kind of stuff have absolutely zero scruples taking advantage of that.
