Hey! Your memory is definitely not wrong, the Crows in the books were never involved in what happened in shadow and bone, it is a combination that they decided to make for the TV show

the first season of the show was essentially the first shadow and bone book and the characters from six of crows added to the plot. since six of crows takes place 2 years after the last shadow and bone book (ruin and rising), they couldn't have mixed the plots since it isn't chronologically correct. but they did do an amazing job mixing the crows in with the original shadow and bone plot
