I've realized also that I could never read all the books, watch all the movies, and play all the games that I want to. It's actually kind of a relief. I don't have to worry about taking too much time or not keeping pace. I was never going to finish everything anyway no matter how fast I went. Best not to stress over it.

I struggle with the quota too, which is surprising considering how new I am and how non-existent people's expectations are for me. I think we need a No Challenge November event. A time to reflect and be thankful for what we do read. No push to finish anything, just briefly discuss any thoughts on the segments we have read.

I'm a slow reader too. I prefer to savor each sentence than just breeze through it. I also like to take a brief break between chapters. I refuse to allow myself to feel pressured to "get through" more books. I'll read as many books as I can given my method of reading, and if I don't get through as many books as I'd like to, then "oh, well," that's just how it's going to be.

You read as fast as you read. Don't feel bad about it. Enjoy the experience. I find that if I'm constantly thinking about the next book, the one I'm in currently reading is being cheated on. It deserves all the attention you can give it, or it should be DNR'd.

"I'm not the slowest reader in the world but not fast enough for everything I wanna read". Yep I feel this. Mountains of books I want to read but I know ultimately I'm lucky to get through 1 or 2 a week. It's why I am so willing to DNF books these days and I most certainly don't compare myself to others when it comes to reading. That said next month is sorted with Conan!

If you are too slow a reader, I must be dead. Books are such a wonderful gift; you should be enjoying your channel at least as much as we do. A couple of suggestions: you can do Cimmerian September without reading all of it in one month. If you do, say, three stories a week, not only will you give yourself time to savor the work, you'll also be able to have the event every year for a while. I think you should read stuff first and then talk about it. This is a hobby; it should not feel like homework. If you were only doing the Robert E. Howard Show or only Epic Comics or only science fiction, I'd still be grateful for the content. I promise you, this channel is a lot of fun for all of us. You should just let yourself off the hook, take off your pants and grab a book in one fist and a flagon of grog in the other.

Before I found booktube, I used to buy a book, read a book. Buy another book, read the book. And so on. Now, I have shelves of books waiting to be read, lists of books I want to read but don’t own...yet. Lists of books I want to buy...soon. Books I’ve preordered. No pressure here!! Oh, and I can’t bring myself to dnf except in extremely rare occasions. And when I’m reading, I read every word, I don’t skim read. That’s a really nice Shakespeare edition❤️

Honestly Michael, I think you read just fine lol. No one will ever complete every single book they want to but I like how many books you read and your knowledge on them. You break down what you read in a fun and engaging manner. Finishing a 700 page book in a week and a half is REAL quite good/impressive. My problem is that I have just been reading ALL day and I think KZbin has put in unhealthy reading habits for me. So my goal is to do OTHER things and trying to live my life more for things I will actually cherish. So I think I am going to focus on expanding outside of Booktube and actually READ less.

Thank you for this one Michael. I briefly considered jumping into booktubing but the pressure of putting time constrictions on my reading dissuaded me greatly. With some potential future health issues that could determine my life expectancy, the pressure is already felt regardless. Thanks to June on the Range, I've found a new love for westerns, but I've traded in my Michael Connelly reading time in concession. Was losing interest anyway. I've determined, due to pressures of time, to read what I love.....from Steinbeck, to westerns, to my other faves from other genres. For being able to stick with doing booktube, you're Marshal Dillion to my Chester. Im a wimp. Appreciate what you do!!!!! As for Shakespeare......a big no can do here.......sacrilege, I know.....shrug.

I hear ya, Michael. I have always been a slow reader in my estimation. I have thousands of books, and I will never finish them unfortunately. I started The Count of Monte Cristo some time ago, and I’m only half way through. But I also am reading other stuff and listening to audiobooks. I don’t have the “projects” that you set for yourself, but I still feel that pressure from knowing that I won’t be able to read everything. Well, it is what it is. I engulf my books; I try to take in every word; I don’t want to miss any nuance from the books I read. I just have to make my peace with knowing I can’t finish them all.

This really hit home for me. My wife and I are complete opposites in every way. She will read a book in 2-3 days that would take me a week plus to read. We joke that its because I hated English class, and never liked reading as a child or even as an adult until a few years ago (38). I truly doubt that's the cause but much like Mr. Vaughan when I read a novel it plays like a movie in my head, the world peels away and I'm immersed in this fantasy. I did have a mental block when I would pick up a 500+ page book that I would not even start it. So I started with things I liked and found to be shorter than expected. Frankenstein led to Dracula led to sherlock homes and so on until that feeling went away.

I hear what you are saying. I did bookstagram for about two years. At first it was fun, but towards the end, it got very stressful. I would post a picture of a cool book, then give a micro-biography of the author. The research involved got more and more time-consuming. I told my followers I was thinking of stopping, they mostly urged me to continue. I did for a few more months, but last march I quit. Now I read what I want, when I want. I was averaging around 80 books a year, I've already passed 100 this year. I love your videos but don't let them rule and ruin your reading. It's too important to enjoy what you read and read what you enjoy.

I'm a slow reader and I'm not ashamed to admit that. However, I do make it a routine to read 2 chapters a day of a book I'm currently reading. Right now I'am debating between reading the second Sherlock Holmes novel The Sign of The Four, or read 5 more short stories from my complete tales of hp lovecraft book. Reading to me should be treated as a relaxing walk on a nature trail in the summer; where you can take your time and feel every bit and every moment that the story has to offer. I also take notes alongside what I'm reading as well; that way once I get to the video making process I will have a tone of reference points to turn into lengthy discussion methods when I finally record a video. I've been using this method for a while and i already have videos scheduled to release from August though to October. I enjoy making content yes, but I want it to remain a hobby and not let it become a chore or a job. I read for the enjoyment of reading. 🙂❤📚

I feel ya man. I’m a slow reader, and there’s so much I’d like to read. But these days with life getting in the way, I just narrowed it down to my four favorite authors to read and reread. Frank Herbert, Howard, Lovecraft, and Tolkien. Between all their work, its enough to read. And every time I read a different author or something new, I can’t help but think that I’m trying to rush through it so I can go back to read my favorites. Perhaps that makes me a grumpy old man at early age of 47. Things were better back in my day when I just read what I know I like.

Can totally relate. Few months back I checked out David Butler's books on speeding up your reading using the right side of your brain. Not typical speed reading stuff, but more techniques based on smarter parsing and deeper immersion. Definitely something I want to get back to, else I'll never finish all the Conans in September, along with the RCOBC read. I'm not a content creator, but as a new-ish participant in Booktube, I can also feel a pressure that was never there before. I decided to not participate in Garbaugust just to relieve some of that feeling.

I know it's hard for Booktubers. Just read what you enjoy, however long it takes, and then talk about it. That's why we watch. We are not keeping score. We all understand that there is this thing called Real Life. (Annoying thing that it is.) If it means not being able to make as many videos or participating in all the challenges/activities, so be it. We all read at different speeds. I am a slow reader too. I never realized that until I took some online test recently. I was shocked that I was below average. It bothered me way more than it should have bothered me. I finally had to shake some sense into myself. Who cares if I'm not meeting some arbitrary standard? Please don't stress yourself out. Reading should be fun. Booktube seems to be making reading not fun for the content creators. That makes me sad.

I'm a turtle-reader, too, so I completely understand your plight! If it helps at all, I have found that I read faster with ebooks over printed books (though as you can imagine, some aspects of the experience are lacking!). It also helps me to mix formats with long books: eyeball-read as I have the time and energy, and also ear-read when my hands or eyes are busy. I read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell with a combination of all three formats...though it still took me weeks to finish! Of course, digital means may not be your cup of tea and may not even be possible for your vintage SF. But there is no such thing as "too slow"--every Booktuber is unique! It's certainly not a requirement to churn through 30 books a month. (I do sigh in envy sometimes, though!)

By the way, thanks for doing this video. It was a good reminder to rethink my reading goals. I keep a yearly reading record. Each month I write down the title and author of each book I read. Each year I push to read as many books as I can. It works out fairly well. And, even though I'm not a speed reader I can tally 60-70 books a year. But there are times when my self-induced pressure goads me to churn out the books and break last year's record. What's that old saying? "It's not the destination, but the journey." This applies well to reading. What does it matter if at the end of my life, I can boast about reading so many books, yet, I failed to drink each one in as I read it? Thanks for the reminder to slow down and to revisit the very reason we got into reading in the first place: the sheer enjoyment and adventure!

Then you have the other factors that play into this. How dense is the prose for you? What is your current mood/health/mental state? I know with something like Jim Butcher, or Andy Weir's work I can pretty much blitz through them if I give them the proper time, but with something like REH's Conan it might be mostly short stories with a lot of energy, but it throws me off, and different writers will do that to you till you're use to them. There is also something to be said about Mass Market Paperback vs. Hardback playing a factor to. Since our eyes digest them differently, and typically with hardbacks we have our comfortable reading zones with them. While MMPs can easily be read just about anywhere. Though I've been hiatus from reading novels seriously for a few years. I find comic books just read faster, and thus I have the illusion of progress that is going to be hard to break when I move back to novels, and stuff. Which is a interesting point going back to REH, and Weird Tales when people use to get the stories piece meal. When you think about it like that, maybe you're not as slow as you think you are. 😉

Great video. BookTube definitely makes you put more pressure on yourself to read. Can we stress the fact though that you read 6 books (Blackwater) in a week and a half. 🎉

I’m a slow reader as well. Probably because as an artist, I spend too much time visualizing what I read. I’ve been on a Sax Rohmer kick lately, and I’ve enjoyed imaging the exotic settings of his oriental mysteries, but painting pictures in my head while I read slows me down considerably.

I think there are a lot of people who watch booktube that can identify with feeling like they don’t “read fast enough.” I’m a pretty fast reader, and have been going though an average of about 10 reading items a month this year. That includes graphic novels, short story collections, and poetry collections, in addition to regular fiction and non fiction. And it also includes a LOT of audio books. But I typically spend a few hours a day reading. So I’m reading a lot, and I feel like I’m going too slow. Because I see full time booktubers reading so much, and I want to “keep up”, and then there are special events, and my church book club, and all the things I want to read anyway, and new books I get introduced to by booktube… it is EASY to feel overwhelmed. However, the only reading speed that is “too slow” in my mind is the one where you choose never to pick up (or listen to) a book. So, no Michael, you don’t read too slow, and certainly not too slow for booktube. That said, if eliminating the word “projects” from your book related vocabulary is helpful in relieving some pressure and anxiety, cool! Just as long as you don’t abandon booktube! (Please and thank you.)😊

Your focus on the reading projects has been an obvious stress on the channel. I’d suggest fully committing to less of them and just doing them as you are able. For example, I don’t care if you ever read all the novels by Stephen King, but I do love your videos on him. I don’t care if you read 500 books before you buy one, but your haul vids were the best of their kind. Just make the vids and read what you want. Your channel got me into BookTube so thanks for all the great content and recommendations!

I'm with you 110% on this - I read at a decent enough pace, but I'm not nearly as fast as most Booktubers. The "all of this other stuff" that comes around makes it a real challenge to jump into events, etc. while also getting to what you want to accomplish. Reclaim that joy of reading, sir! Anxiety has no place here. Cutting the projects is a great plan! Elric October? Well, guess I'm going to have to go hunting for some Elric soon!

Yeah! It's the curse of reading, right? We have so much that we want to read! But the time is just NOT there! Sometimes I legitimately skim over some sections in books because they are bogging down in details. However, there are times when the details are so descriptive that I need to slow down to catch the plot. I guess the battle is between enjoying the book I'm reading as opposed to reading as many books as I can in a year. God! Slow down and enjoy!

Actually, I read some Shakespeare for GarbAugust: _Titus Andronicus_ - and that was trash, all right. Murder, revenge, dismemberment, more revenge, more dismemberment, culminating in a “revenge pie”. But this sort of shock stage play was popular in the 1590s.

The problem with penciling in Shakespeare next September is that by then, it will have been a WHOLE YEAR since you have read Conan, and you will have to start all over again.

It's reassuring to hear someone address this issue. I have tried to read faster and had the same experience of not enjoying it as much as when I read at a comfortable speed. Now I just read at my own speed which is probably pretty average. I'm having a great time with garb august and I'm surprised at how much I have read, some of the pulp fiction is pretty short and easy reads. I find audiobooks help a lot because I can still get other things done while listening to books.

The manor is too stately for A/C. Hey, savor the words, Man. I found you because a friend suggested you, but she has quit doing vlogs. I have tried to look into other Booktubers, but they seem young and kinetic. I am low on time, but I enjoy your humor and honest suggestions. Be yourself, do what you need to do and don't compare your posts to others, because theirs pale in comparison to your posts.

I'm a slow reader, too. Though I've been flying through some of the GarbAugust books, because I feel fins basically skimming them. I'm not missing out on complex plots points or elegant language. I also deliberately chose short books. But generally, I figure I'll get through what I get through. It does frustrate me when I am trying to read epic fantasy series and it takes weeks and weeks to get through things. I also try to pair lighter, quicker reads (for when I'm less focused) with the heftier stuff. I just like to take my time and savor the reading, to enjoy the writing and to let my mind wander in the world of the story. The books will be there when you get to them! And you could always update us on what you've read so far in a book, rather than feeling like you need to read the whole thing before posting about it.
