I Really Get Into It

Largely ignored and left to their own devices, a group of unassuming teenagers in Sioux Falls, South Dakota created their own culture, community, and economy. And when they moved out into the world, they brought what they learned along with them.
I REALLY GET INTO IT: THE UNDERAGE ARCHITECTS OF SIOUX FALLS PUNK is a documentary about the tenacity and ingenuity of youth, finding and following your convictions, and how the kids you least expect often make the most noise.
Featuring interviews with Larry Livermore (LOOKOUT! RECORDS), Ian Mackaye (FUGAZI, MINOR THREAT), Mike Park (SKANKIN' PICKLE), Terry Taylor (HAMMERLORD, NODES OF RANVIER), Rebecca Hanten (CADILLAC BLINDSIDE, THE CARDINAL SIN), Shawn Kock (BLOOD DRUGS, ABSOLUTE MONARCHS), and many more.
Features rare live footage of dozens of bands, including GREEN DAY, THE OFFSPRING, NEUROSIS, SPIRIT OF VERSAILLES, FLOODPLAIN, CHRIST ON A CRUTCH, AVAIL, SAMUEL S.C., SCHLONG, THE SNEAKIES, CITIZEN FISH, LIBIDO BOYZ, NATION OF ULYSSES, CRINGER, FACE OF DECLINE, SINKING STEPS RISING EYES...
Physical copies of the film can be purchased at ireallygetintoit.com.

As a kid in the 70's 80's, that was how I bought records, walked into a record store and blindly bought records based on the artwork. I still have and love those records today. I also went to shows without knowing the bands that were playing and saw descendents, circle jerks, fishbone, zero boys etc before knowing how awesome they were. Plus all the art/punk bands in Indianapolis basement shows, house parties and abandoned buildings would be temporary venues.

100% possible and much needed. If you've got the people that wanna play, find a little hole in the wall you can sneak into and set up shop. My local scene is in the basement of a porn shop lol another is in an abandoned autobody shop. If people want it as bad as you they'll bring equipment and skills to the table. Find local bands from other areas online and ask them if they wanna play at your spot to get some variety. Best of luck.

Pretty lovely work, this. Grew up in Sioux Falls, and after returning from a year in Los Angeles but before moving to Minneapolis for school, Rick Smith, Rich Show and I put No Direction together in 1980. We'd occasionally practice/whoop it up evenings at my pop's 66 station on 12th and Grange. At the time, KAUR was pretty much the only way to hear anything raucous and strange so I spun records there, often returning on weekends with a load of punk/noise/weirdo LPs cadged from pals in Mpls. to play on the air, late at night- it felt like sacred duty to get this stuff on the air in SF. Very pleased there are still folks in my hometown with talent and good ideas, and their heads screwed on properly, enough to merit such a beautifully kindhearted and well-put-together doc like this. Thank you.

@@Nicks66Service Props just the same. I was friends with Lance who played drums in Rich's next band Flag With Hank. They had a pretty magical little run in SF back then. Evolved into Violet and apparently they still get together and play out some.

So cool to stumble on this. I graduated SF Washington in '89 and remember skanking and moshing like crazy in that sweaty little venue very well even before the years covered here. Seeing that slippery ass tile floor gave me a flashback. I think the Dissent shows you could get in for a can of soup sometimes. And endlessly sifting through bins at Ernie November just down the road from Axtell Park Jr. High. What a great little scene. Thanks for documenting it. Also, at one time, the voice of the pizza puppet was Jamie Smith, who just ran for Governor of SD, was a classmate, is great singer and really nice guy. lol!

I grew up in Minneapolis and started going to shows in 1990, but of course eventually I was familiar with most of the Souix Falls bands with it being nearby ... And a bunch of those SF SD people moved to the Twin Cities over time, of course, and I got to know them there ... Really enjoyed this documentary. Really good stuff. PS: Wasn't there an Ernie November in Mankato, MN? That's another scene that could really use a documentary like this one. Small town, great music scene with Marty's and so forth.

I grew up in spokane, had no idea punk and underground music existed. The first punks i ever saw were on tourist postcards, but i didnt think they were really people. Like, i thought it was just a pic of some people dressed up for the postcard. I entered the punk scene at around 16 in around 86/87 because my best friend got into punk and played me lps at his place all the time. Gbh, black flag, cricle jerks, the exploited, sex pistols lps. And no matter where i've gone in life its always been the underground for me. It's my home unlike any other.

I am always telling my kids about the Sioux Falls music scene growing up, this was a nice trip down memory lane! Even though I was one of the little punks in the scene in the late 90’s to ‘00s. Definitely paints a way “cleaner” pic than I remember tho😂 almost wholesome, we were anything but 😅 Fantastic work I love seeing these landmarks almost forgotten to time. It’s nice to see that the scene is still kicking I’ll have to make a trip up! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Sioux Falls got on my radar in the late 90s when there was an explosion of bands playing music that i was heavily into at the time…..spirit of Versailles, exam, caligari, eclipse of Eden, ect….I remember being kinda shocked at how all these bands came out a place where I thought there wasn’t much of anything….then again my own town (Kalamazoo mi) had its own “emo explosion” in the early-mid 90s and sometimes I wonder if someone somewhere else was thinking the same thing about us….

That generation of bands came up right after I left town. That whole crew was hypermotivated, super talented, and so hard working. Kind of wish someone would make a doc about that era, just for my own curiosity.
