26:47 My writing instructors told me that "Style is what you can't help doing," and pointed that in time the limitations of the past become a signature of something nostalgic or authentic-think how much effort we go to now in the digital world to mimic the sound of vinyl, which is largely a product of its how *TERRIBLE* it is as a sound storage medium. I come back to this over and over and over again, whenever my brain gets hung up trying to transcend my limitations and what I really need is permission to ship. Better when I can get something out the door, and best when I can own the limitations, even lean into them in ways.

However, apart from the Bon Iver album (which actually has some other mics in the mix too iirc, at least for the horns), few others come to mind: - Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen (2xSM57 into some early Tascam compact tape recorder) - first two Elliott Smith albums (SM57 + a radio shack mic into Portastudio for the debut and a 57 through a nice preamp into some nicer Tascam reel for the self-titled) - the first Jacob Collier album (SM58) - reportadly, the first two Unknown Mortal Orchestra albums (SM58 to reel) - Connan Mockasin's Forever Dolphin Love (SM57 into a Portastudio) - first few Elvis Depressadly releases

I’ve been very fascinated with home recording gear and it took me a long time to actually use the gear I have at home. I got it in October last year and I didn’t get around to using it until September this year. Life has been so crazy. I must say the advice you gave on not giving up about nailing a part on the acoustic guitar, and only using one mic for everything, I find it tremendously inspiring! What I’m trying to say is I love your videos and the high quality content that is in them! So a million thanks for your channel! It’s so inspiring!

Just wanted to say thank you for doing this video and videos like this I realy like that you changed your focus from gear reviews to bedroom production It's like a journey to shift the habbit of asking "What gear should I buy?" to "What else can I make with things I already have"? It's a fight against procrastination, exclusivity and toxic mentality It is very inspiring! Thank you

That's exactly right!! I'd been fighting that mental battle in my head for months and months, about how I aimed to create videos about production and landed in review land, there's nothing wrong with reviews I don't mean to say that, just not where I intended to be. The fact that the transition was welcomed with such open arms was so amazing

@@AudioHaze - I just found you a few days ago. I've been an electric guitarist for 25 years, done live sound, recorded a few albums in bands, but I just felt a need to build a home studio where I can record myself and others. It's coming along great, almost done, I've got a singer/songwriter to record, and I was like ... well, shit, I don't know what I'm doing yet for the recording part. I've got a Scarlett 212, a Studio Projects c1, a Princeton Reverb, jazzmaster, tele, 335, and acoustic. Your videos have been the piece I needed when I needed it. Seriously man, thank you. You're doing great work, and it's equally enjoyable from an entertainment perspective, a sound nerd perspective, and a musicians perspective.Well done.

So glad you included the montage of the recording process frustrations! This hits so close to me as I think my recording sessions have to be somewhere around 70/30 recording and cursing to myself. There was a time where I thought I had pretty good time when playing and recording myself really demonstrated to me just how sloppy I can be a lot of the time

Yeah as far as I can tell every musician I've talked to experiences a similar thing. I really think its less so about your own musician sometimes and more so about getting in your own head, and THAT element is a universal feeling. We all want the recorded take to be the best possible version of that part, so the pressure gets crazy intense

First of all: what a fugging banger track! Second: thank you! You bring so much positivity to the music world, wich we really need! There are so many awesome music makers out there that get hate because they use tools that help them reach their goals! You not only go out here with your positivity and reasurance but also (and argueably more important) with amazing tips, tricks and just full blown ways of doing stuff in ways that basically anyone can. If they have the passion for it at least and a single damn mic! I love drumming..but never had a real drum set..partially cause i'm broke as shit lol, but also cause i always though to myself..."why even bother, i wouldn't even able to record it anyway" well imma save and buy at least a kick, snare and hihats now and finally go and become a better drummer (not cause of the gear itself obviously lol, but because that's gonna make me wanna play the heck out of it..unlike my crappy E-kit haha..wich i kinda also play the heck out of anyways) Well anyways! Thanks for what you're doing man! Much love from some random german guy that love making music haha!

I truly loved this! My buddy / drummer lives in IN and I live in TN. He records at home with just a few mics and then sends the tracks to me. Then I record guitar, bass and vocals at home with just a few mics. Seeing that you did it with just one truly inspired me. And great song, dude. It really makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who uses other songs as a reference. I do that a lot. "I want a song kinda like this..." And then I'll record 3 or 4 ... or more different versions of the same song.... it gets maddening. The slow version, the fast version, the rock version, the piano version.... and I sometimes get lost in the woods other times I find the forest. This helped me see that there others in the woods with me and finding their forest. Thanks for making this.

Oh dude well thank you for sticking around as long as you have!! If I could give advice on growing, at least for me, I really found a good growth pace once I abandoned what I thought was "pleasing for the viewer", as backwards as that sounds. If I was so excited at a video concept that I'd be willing to drop weeks and weeks of work into it, people seemed to see that. Worry less about a niche and think about the concepts that are so exciting to you that you're willing to put a stupid amount of work into it, people see that stuff. Consciously or otherwise

There are those of us in roughly the same space. I’m recording an album in a room in the house. Mixing and producing. Wonderful to ride shotgun along with you in that space. And the most important thing is you/we are doing it for ourselves and friends with the “making it in the business” mentality not a part of the process. Just creativity and sharing THAT! @@legacyShredder1 Ive got a bunch of guitars, a nitro mesh e kit with quite cymbals with all the holes in them and a bunch of other instruments like tongue drums, I'm best at 6 string bass and use a Roland RX bass amp, the one you can put batteries in, its amazing. Been arranging and flipping samples with Ableton for over a year and everything sounds great. Now I have tones of experience I wana try doing comedic rapping over my own playing. 23:39 Seeing you frustrated and pissed off ("why is my finger doing that?!") is actually super encouraging to me. I've been working on recording a song I wrote a year ago, a song I've played maybe a hundred times now, and last weekend recording I just couldn't control my hands. It's nice to know these things aren't just me. I'm not bad or broken, I'm just human. Take a break if you need it, work on a different part. Know you can do it and don't quit, because your art is worth making. "F* you. F* me. F* this." is so freaking relatable. 😂 I'm pretty sure I said exactly this last week. Thanks for this video. And I love the song!

Love this comment!! Make art at all costs, and if you can't get the part down at the time move on and come back when you have a more level head. We all need to hear that sometimes, can't tell you how many times I've fixated on a part for hours only to come back the next morning and get a better take within 10 minutes lol

This is easily your best video. Love getting to see the process of another artist. Really appreciate that whole “don’t let anyone, even yourself, get in the way of making art” advice, I feel like a lot of us bedroom musicians can get too into our own heads and we tend to forget to set aside egos and just create.

Brother got them angry eyebrows This sounds really good! That lossy usage is neat, and the drum setup is really cool! Hell of a mic too, shows how much mileage people should be getting out of the tools they have on hand. Also yeah, 100% agree on that “real musician” bullshit. The whole point of “playing” music is to have fun. That’s why it’s called playing. Also, one guitarist to another, fuck what anyone has to say bad about your playing. You rip like crazy bro.
