About Trailmakers:
In the toughest motoring expedition in the universe, you and your friends will build your own vehicles to cross a dangerous wasteland. Explore, crash horribly, use your wits to build a better rig, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find on your way.
Welcome to the Ultimate Expedition!
Journey over grueling mountains, hazardous swamps, and bone-dry deserts on a distant world far from civilization - it is just you, your fellow adventurers and the amazing, jet-powered hover-buggy you built yourself. Explore, crash your vehicle, build a better one, and get as far as you can with whatever spare parts you find along your way.
Trailmakers is about building very awesome vehicles and machines, but you don’t need an engineering degree to get started. The intuitive builder will get you going in no time. Everything you build is made from physical building blocks. Each block has unique features like shape, weight and functionality. They can be broken off, refitted and used to build something new. Individually the blocks are fairly simple, but combined the possibilities are endless.
Expedition Mode is the challenging campaign mode of Trailmakers. You are competing in an off-world rally expedition with only a few building blocks to get you started. You must build, tinker with and rebuild your machine to progress. Journey through a big world, overcome deep gorges, angry wildlife and dangerous weather to progress and find new parts that will juice up your machine. The world in Expedition Mode will test your survival skills and ingenuity.
Sandbox Mode is where you want to head for an unrestricted, sandbox, vehicle-building experience. Here you can build anything you can dream of, and play around with it in the world of Trailmakers. It is a great place to test out crazy machines, and experiment with the physics engine. With tons of different blocks, hinges, thrusters and interactive vehicle parts - the skybox is the limit.
Trailmakers is even more fun if you play it with other people. Build cool vehicles and compete in mini-game modes with your friends or other Trailmakers online. Build a helicopter, send it to your friend, and shoot them out of the sky. Put two seats on a tank, and let your friend control the turret. As we get further in Early Access development Expedition Mode will also be adapted to multiplayer.

The force arrow diagrams in trailmakers are for the vehicle as it is built initially: Before your tail goes into the V shape Trailmakers is telling you that your lift from your wings are further back. Also, the propellers on the drone are pointing up but also away from the body to give it greater stability. The large propellers in Trailmakers take time to spin up to max thrust too, so dabbing the throttle sometimes causes them to become out of sync giving you different vertical thrust in each corner.

The facts that the prop point away from the body doesn't make it more stable in vtol since the force relative with the center of mass doesn't change. It's to have more clearence with the body

@@methusmit5015 No ... Irl pointing outward gives a bit more stability with roll and also allows them to yaw by slowing the opposite engines. However it's not commonly used because it reduces vertical thrust efficiency and is not typically necessary with the stability computers.

Probably won’t help all that much. It may help when coupled with a complex control system but quadcopters work absolutely fine with all propellers directly vertical. It probably won’t help in trailmakers though. Edit: the angling in the original could be mechanical constraints or for aesthetics, for quadcopters you generally want the propellers facing directly up to avoid axis coupling, if you have them angled out then a roll motion will also include a strafe which may not be desired.

The instability is caused from the controls of the large wings up front. The reason why it feels like a feedback loop is because once one wing gets more air than the other, that wing forces the craft towards the direction the top surface of the wing is pointed at. This makes sense since you also said that once you "get going" it's a lot more stable. This is because of the tail - as you go faster, the tail will provide more stability since more lift will be generated from it's control surfaces.

I think the reason it's so unstable in VTOL during takeoff is because as the 'V' tail rolls (to the right, for example), the right part of the V has more vertical wind resistance, thus rolling you more to the right. The opposite is true when landing. That's why it was easier to land. Great vid.

I'm pretty sure the instability with the auto stabalization comes from makeing it go on a toggle. the logic gates have a small ammount of delay in them, so if you wire it angle sensor --> xor --> heli engine, the xor adds just enough delay to make feedback loops. i ran into this exact issue when i tried to build this plane. my solution was to leave the heli engines on during flight but make the control surfaces big enough to counteract them with enough speed.

the resistance from the tail being v shaped means that its really unstable as it rises, but should stabilise if the force is not going in that direction. as the plane rolls right, the cross sectional area of the right side of the tail increases while the left decreases, creating the feedback loop as the air resistance on the right increases, increasing the rolling force.
@barefootalien

For more stability in VTOL mode, I think the easiest correction would be to fold the tail up to vertical. It would remove a lot of the feedback loop you're talking about (dynamic roll and yaw instability interacting with each other, induced by the primary lift/drag surfaces rotating in and out of the airflow at various angles). Don't feel bad, man. There are only a few vehicles capable of doing this, and the first one, the Osprey, was a development nightmare.

I think the problem with nosing down and your fighting with the tail is because you have the wing pieces on the tail the "right" way up, which is producing lift as an upwards force. In a real plane, the horizontal stabiliser produces downwards force. The natural tendency of the aircraft is usually to pitch nose downwards, so when the tail has a force going down the aircraft pivots around the centre of mass and brings the nose up.

If you wanted to get the center of lift adjusted in both plane mode and VTOL mode without using tail trim, here's how you'd do it: First, adjust the forward/backwards position of the wing such that the COL aligns with the COM in plane mode. Secondly, move the propellers inwards/outwards (in plane mode), which moves them forwards/backwards in VTOL mode. Step 2 will hopefully be able to align the COL and COM in VTOL mode. If not, you will need to shift the wings forwards/backwards until they are and the compensate with tail trim.
@Loop_Kat
@Loop_Kat 11 ай бұрын
Other comments are making a lot of good points, but I think one of the main issues with the VTOL mode is that you basically lose all of the lift from the main wings while the tail wings are still providing a bunch of vertical lift, meaning the tail is more or less acting like a slippery pivot point for the rest of the vehicle to twist around. The propellers facing upward should make up for this, but as someone else pointed out, the fact that they're facing straight up instead of angled away from the vehicle slightly means they don't balance each other out in any way. Once you start rolling, that's just the way you're going now. I wonder if shifting the weights onto the ends of the propeller pylons would also help with this, as it would shift your weight way lower when entering VTOL mode and reduce the tendency for the vehicle to want to roll over

But anyway great videos please continue what your doing 🙂.

7:12 Rather than trying to rebalance the entire craft, especially with something that has two flight modes where the centers of gravity and thrust will change between modes, I would have suggested just using flaps instead. For a constant nose-down inclination, you could either set one pair of elevators on a toggle and low angle pitch, or just put actual flap parts on the wing. Since you're already using rotors in the wing root to change the angle of attack between 0° and 90° when you change flight modes, you could also have a second pair of rotors that are on a toggle set to only 5° so that the entire front wing acts as a flap, (this is what I normally, because I prefer to make planes with sail parts, rather than wing parts, for the wings.) If you reconfigured the entire wing such that it starts in VTOL mode, you could probably make this work with a single rotor that only rotates about 85° when unfolding from VTOL to normal flight. 12:36 Ah yes, there you go, figured it out.

That is a wild VTOL, it does not appear they intended for any flight operations with the wings folded. Just using that position with all for propellors to take off and land. The mechanism used to transition to flight mode moves middle to back. This could account for the weight shift between the two modes you had issues with. I noticed the nose did not dip for forward flight until the wings had transitioned 25% forward, and after the wings had reached flight mode the outer pair stopped and folded the blades in to reduce air drag. During the transition back to vertical mode the craft did experience the same tail/nose wobble that you had as the control surfaces changed. I will be interested to see how they move forward with the design.

It’s your tail, the v shape in trail makes is unstable vertical. Like your trying to push a bowl up its unstable if you were to flatten out the v vertical or horizontal you will have greater stability and consistency when in vtol mode. Hope this helps

The blades were spinning in the same direction causing heavy torque during VTOL however the wings/tail made it 'interesting', if possible try reversing the propellers on one side. Hope this helps

Helicopters (and multicopters) are inherently unstable, they need either a fly bar giving input to the blade (on a big scale, this works well, but is a very complex mechanism) or electronic stabilization, way simpler mechanism, but requires a small program controlling the speed of each motor (or angle of the swashplate in the case of a standard helicopter). The program in question is called a PID controller, it stands for Proportional, Integral, Derivative. Essentially the P term is: I'm far away from the target, let's go towards it, D term is I'm moving towards the target really fast, let's slow down, and finally the I term is I've been slightly off the target for a while, let's nudge towards it. Together, when tuned properly, they make aircrafts, cars, cruise control, lane keep assist, thermostats and many other machines work smoothly and not jarring for humans.

a big part of the instability is that quad copters actually work by counter rotating opposite blades. then it uses angle sensors to control the props. you can get close in trail makers but it's really hard to replicate
@conorstewart2214
@conorstewart2214 11 ай бұрын
The counter rotating blades are only necessary to balance out the torque created and can also be used for yaw, trailmakers doesn’t have any torque on its propellers (helicopter engines and other spinning blocks do, but propellers don’t) so counter rotating blades are irrelevant and also means that you can’t implement yaw on a quadcopter in trailmakers just using propellers. For any decent flying quadcopter it is a lot more complicated than just using angle sensors to control the props and the sensors used do not measure angle, they measure acceleration or rotational velocity which can be used to find the attitude in reference to Earth.

@@conorstewart2214 yeah I understand the principle I was just trying to relate to what trailmakers has. The sensors on the quadcopter do control how fast the props spin in order to stabilize the flight. Trailmakers doesn't have a way to do that.

ok, so, wings don't lift anywhere near as much weight while they aren't level with the ground. i build a plane at a 45 degree angle(so it looked like an upside down V) and needed way more wings to it's weight than when it had a normal wing layout. those rear 'v' wings were basically throwing off the in game force calculator

I think its doing the feedback due to the fact scrap used unsymmetric aerofoils. Trailmakers renders the aerofoil physics very poorly at times. I reckon when the wings are in vtol, the game gets confused and tries to add lift dependant on which wing is going faster, causing a loop until the force generated by the stabiliser overpowers it when going forwards. Perhaps it would work better with symmetrical aerofoils like the 5x4x1 wing piece with a massive control surface (i forgot the name). The physics makes sense but not trailmakers xd

I'd like to see you revisit one. I think your weight is hurting it. In drone mode all your weight is in the middle making it easy to tip. I think if you had more weight at the propellers it'd be a lot more stable. I also think there's potential to put the added weight on a piston inside the body so you can move it to balance center of mass between plane and drone modes

The reason why it isn't stable, is because the wings are actually slightly angled outwards. This is to provide stability for the aircraft, so the actual aircraft doesn't have the same stability issue scrapman does.

the the picture of the actual aircraft i can see the wings make certain angle outwards from the main body .which could in theory solve a lil bit of balancin issues

its probably the force of the spin on the propellers

the reason for the wonky measurements is it's calculating based on your tail being perfectly horizontal, not when you lift it up into a V shape

interesting, in the reference video the drone shuts off and folds the outer set of props when wing goes horizontal

you should make a mother ship that deploys drones of some kind. that would be epic.

V-tol and weird tail positions, sometimes implies constant corrections by a computer, that's why is an unmanned plane in the first place, like the X-9 Ghost from the Macross franchise, it supposed to be piloted by it system I.A.

I think center of mass and lift shenanigans in the beginning are caused by a shift in center of lift when your tail stabilizer folds

If you read this i have a tip so i have kindna done some test in some different games with stuff like that when in vtol mode if you can get some program to limit the max amount of throust you can put in when vtol i think you can make it better

I had a 1979 chevy scottsdale c10 with a 6" lift. When the sway bar was going out, and id hit a bump right, it would toss the front end around JUST like that feedback loop..
