I had very high hopes about this Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Gym Leader, the electric type streamer called Iono, but she was WAY different than I expected. So I redrew her!

the canon design fits the vibe of Japanese Influencer culture, which is very much informed by idol culture, whereas your design matches a western influencer style better.

For future reference, in anime, oversized clothes on a character is usually a sign that they’re either small, a child, or even just childlike. People often find small things cute, and, at least in anime, that’s often exploited in character designs and traits. With your design, I can definitely see a perfectly more mature version of this gym leader, and it’s great.

Iono's design is peak "this character has a good design that just doesn't appeal to me at all" to me. I just really don't vibe with "overly saccharine to the point of being kind of fake" kind of characters. Your version of her is something I am a bit more into. Really hope to see more trainer art from you in the future, Moxie, you killed it!

Yeah I don't thinks its that. You see everyones reaction to the design and it gives you a I'll feeling towards it. Generally when something is disliked others will band wagon with how someone feels just because its the majority. You do this subconsciously.

If they don't make those Magnemite hairclips ACTUAL MERCH that's a massive L. As per the design, I think it is indeed the eyes that bug me the most. They don't look ENERGETIC they look dead? Or just creepy. She almost looks like a yandere type character lol. I know that's big in anime but still they could've had a fun twist with that type of persona. I think having the blue eyes but with a hint of red to make them almost look purple might have been better. And for the oversized jacket, that looks like it defines all clothing logic, so it should've been an oversized hoodie from the get go. BUT other than that I do like Iono she seems fun.

I actually saw a similar real life sweater on twitter a while ago. It looked goofy then, it looks goofy here, but that's kind of the point. It is very much "high fashion" and would probably collapse in on itself after a few hours of wear, but for a runway show (or short streaming session) it does actually work.

I really like your redesign as much as I love the original. The original was moreso meant to look like a small idol girl, but you made her look more like a game e-girl. It feels a lot like a proper redesign rather than "fixing" her.

I love your redesign. I also like the official design a ton too. I never saw the silhouette before, so I didn't have any previous thoughts. Some people seem to not like her, but I love how much character she is already giving off. Similar to how the shorts for the SWSH Gym leaders did.

Love this design!! Y’know I think the thing I like most about her is her name. And it’s (at least to me) a pun that works both ways like, in Japanese her name is Nanjamo, I think? Which is almost a pun on “nan jya mo(no)” “what is that thing?” and her name in English is Iono (I’unno-I dunno + ion) and part of her streaming content is a guessing game. “What is that thing?” “I’unno.” Maybe I’m reading too much into it. 😂 I’ve been impressed with the names the localization teams have been coming up with for Paldea, is the main point I guess!

I love Iona’s design! Never before have we had streamers in the Pokémon world as far as I’m aware, and I think the design captures the quirkiness that streamers display to attract large audiences. The design only bolsters that. So now we have Vtubers in Pokémon. That’s cool

There’s definitely some stuff about this one that I like more than the other one. The Magnemite hairpieces almost look like they have screen eyes or something, which adds to the electric aspect. When you were sketching it and gave her yellow hair, I almost wished you had kept it. I just like simple, but memorable hairstyles with more natural colors. The multicolor look probably makes sense for the whole idol aesthetic though. I also like simple and memorable outfits, but the jacket being complicated and asymmetrical fits that idol thing like the hair does I’m really glad I found this channel btw. Very interesting stuff :)

The original Iona reminds me on a Vtuber. I've seen art on tumblr where the actual Iona looks very bland and that she hides behind a screen. Yours feels more like someone who takes 6 hours to get dressed up for a livestream. I actually really like both designs!

When you got stuck choosing the colours I had an idea where she would have yellow hoodie and pink jacket in one game and pink hoodie and yellow jacket in the other and maybe even different hair depending on the game. She would be the same character just with different colours. That would be very cool in my opinion. Great vid btw

I love the design you made! The only thing that bothers me is the right arm cause I can't for the life of me figure out how it would realistically turn and twist like that. But other than that I think you did wonderfully! I still like her original design too, I just hope the 3d model sleeves grow on me.

Honestly everyone has their own style, hers is just fine she doesn't look overly childish or like a kid, adults can wear over sized clothing and also happen to look cute. I personally appreciate how each character looks incredibly unique, as an adult it feels quite awful when people day your demeanor is childish, like Bruh can't help the fact that my genes gave me short person with large eyes and curly hair.

I didn’t have any expectations on how she would be and so I love her cutesy way of acting she has so so much personality it feels like more than most gym leaders before. Most gym leaders are just sort of a normal average person with like one vague personality trait but she’s bubbly in your face energetic and full of personality and i love it. I think not having an expectations is the best way to not be disappointed

Personally, I like Moxie's design more. It feels more like a pokemon trainer design to me. I'm not a fan of the big hazmat suit thing she wears and how open it is in the front to show what she's wearing underneath, it just doesn't look quite right to me. I love the magnemite accessories and the colors, but something about it looks really off to me. I think Moxie's design fixes most of what I didn't like about it!
