There are schools that make learning fun, and the students generally do really well during and after school in life. It's just those schools only exist with the funding required, which does exists in public schools... just not nearly enough is spent to make those types of approaches and facilities widespread. I went to a rural middle of nowhere Midwest school, but thanks to cramming core classes every slot early I was able to graduate with useless honors and have big openings in my schedule the last 2 years, so I spent most of the day working with my school's tech person (was a class credit for me, went from 1 hour to 4+) rerunning networking for multiple campuses, settings up computers all over, building servers, and a final where I had basically an unlimited budget to build a workstation I got to take home when I graduated. I had two amazing teachers that got me to that point, one being that tech coordinator. Most kids don't get even close to an opportunity like that, especially in rural schools like I went to (that at the time was a national leader in standardized testing thanks to a great principle that encouraged effort and progress in general, not just the top of the top scores... which collapsed when said principle I had was replaced with one that put sports first... 10 years later we're barely staying certified with the same principle).

Yeah definitely true. And a lot of those good schools get pressured by the districts to normalize curriculum/standards and make things worse. I had a similar experience in late high school, I was able to work ahead far enough that by my senior year I had three periods every day free, I mostly used that time to just run a little online business I had going at the time based around graphic design, and improving my skills there. In my case it felt like some of my best learning opportunities were in spite of the school system, where I had to 'beat the game' in order to have time to do the actual learning I wanted to do. That being said, the engineering department at my school was legitimately valuable since they got money from a local industry to provide 3D printers for us to learn with.

At one point you could take a Harbor Freight battery and put the inner working, battery board and all, into a Black & Decker case and it would work perfectly. When the manufacturer found out they discontinued the battery. Now I can't even switch the 18650 batteries inside. Somehow the charger knows and won't allow it to be charged.

What you said about the school system towards the end there has essentially been the answer to a question I've had for a few years now. Why am I bad at remembering math? Well it's because I don't know how it works. I've gotten into highschool recently, and all the math has gotten fairly complex, and i've had a big difficulty doing it, because i didn't understand how it worked. I get told that this problem gets solved this way, but I never get told why it works. I have never been told how formula's work in math and I forget it, yet I have an almost perfect memory of how my dad's old toyota mr2's wheel well assembly works because I helped him build it. Thank you for answering a question I've had without you even knowing it and it being completely unrelated to the video.

Great video! I’m sure someone probably has mentioned this, but some cheap “no name” batteries will use resistors in place of thermal runaway circuitry, tricking the tool to work, but eliminating the overheating and potential fire preventing safety circuitry. I use whatever works, but it’s something to be aware of. I spend 3 hours trying to swap a sonic toothbrush battery out that was spot welded in and made to be thrown away just because I wanted the challenge and I wanted to know how it worked:)

Id like to see a break down of the circuit board that came with the adaptor; like what is it modifying? how does the intended battery send that particular signal, how do you find the signal? asking for my self who constantly forgets which brand of what i have and having way too many types of chargers.
@EvanMonsma
@EvanMonsma Жыл бұрын
I may do a follow-up down the road, I’ve got some more ideas. Here’s what’s in the adapter- The adapter only receives 2 pins from the Bauer battery (positive and negative) and it adds 2 extra pins for the dewalt end. One of those pins is connected to the positive with a voltage regulator, the other is connected with a resistor. I assume those are arbitrary and change per brand, and the tool checks voltage through those pins to ‘authenticate’ the battery. If you do any experimentation with it let me know!

Acetone smoothing only works really well with ABS. Even with that you can only use vapors, a full acetone bath with ABS printed items would give you a pile of mush heh... If you are very curious, check out what others use for smoothing on specific types of 3D printer filament. Most popular and/or common are PLA, PETG, and ABS. Been tinkering my whole life, I have a slew of projects going. Self built 3D printer, CNC engraver for creating my own PCBs, testing equipment (some self made) for refurbing the electronics in old tube radios, I built a CAD workstation separate from my main computer, one of my cars needs some work on the head so I have that tore apart, I created my own NAS, and the list goes on.... it doesn't matter what it is, I'll tinker with it. I'll check your channel out =) you earned another sub my friend.
@EvanMonsma
@EvanMonsma Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I had seen vapor baths before so was vaguely familiar with the concept - I guess I lucked out that it wasn't ABS so I didn't totally dissolve my part lol. I did notice that it didn't really do much, so I assume it was PLA, in my memory acetone worked for all of them but I guess not. Did this in 2 days so I was just in a rush to get it "good enough". When I get a printer myself I'll definitely dive into setting up a proper vapor bath. Last time I really tinkered with a 3D printer was like 5 years ago, but I'm excited to see just how much things have improved when I start really diving in again to buy a new printer. That custom CNC project sounds awesome- I've looked into that a little myself, although I was interested in milling aluminum which is a bit more scary to mess with DIY so not sure if I'll go through with that one. A NAS is also something I'm interested in down the road, and car maintenance is always interesting - I've got a lot going on with my car myself. I'm sure you'll find some of my upcoming stuff interesting, glad you're here!

all u need is a 10k resistor between the positive and pin 5 (i think) and 12v to pin 3 (I think). at least thats how I made a dewalt drill run from a regular 20v power supply

@shoopnooop2952 Жыл бұрын
Just an fyi every one of the batteries used in powertools with the exception for ryobi have no real protection circuitry. This means you can run a battery down so low it doesn't work because it's the tool that is turning off instead of the battery. Ideally the adapter would have some kind of low voltage cutoff but most don't so just don't run the too far down and you'll be fine.

Harbor Freight minion here, and I approve of this nonsense. Try incorporating that small board into the Bauer casing. Furthermore, ask yourself "what is that little board doing?"
@EvanMonsma
@EvanMonsma Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I used to work at a harbor freight myself. I should have elaborated more in the video- my thought process was that I didn’t want to do the electrical modifications and permanently turn it into a dewalt battery, in theory the physical modifications would have allowed it to function as both. Another commentor brought up a good idea though - add a switch that swaps between the two boards, effectively switching the brand back and forth. Something I might try in the future.
