RIGHT LADS, Today we're playing Imperator Rome. This game is too good to just fade into obscurity i've decided so here we are playing Paradox's best kept secret. To be honest i am suprised we haven't covered the actual nation of Rome itself thus far but here we are. Also for those of you about to comment that is is sacreligious that i have been photoshopped onto a Roman consul... Y'know what comment away.
I REFUSE to let this game die

For those that are intrigued - This game is currently 75% off on steam, and the mod Laith is using double functions as a sort of constant stream of updates and dlc. Honestly, they've done loads so far. I'd recommend it! Edit: Mod is called Imperator: Invictus. It is endorsed by the devs, and they even updated the game to make it easier to mod, just for this mod!! Invictus is essentially its own dev team adding consistent updates to the game, fixing content, and adding content such as nations, areas of the map, mission trees and game mechanics.

Imperator Rome really deserved better. i still think imperator's game engine would have been the best suited for a post apocalypse mod like after the end or the hoi4 fallout one. because in other games they really have to force the game to fit the setting or the setting to fit the game but not so much in imperator, there's a reason why the legion in new Vegas are based off of the Romans, its a very similar era of civilisation.

Whether Rome's rise was surefire or not, this game really makes it seem like Rome's rise was surefire. Right off the bat, they have four vassals, each with their own troops. They already are the best in their region for quality and quantity. *And they only snowball from there.* Good luck playing anyone in Gaul; even good luck won't save you.

Rome probably had good enough institutions 🏛 to survive as a strong vassal/province with its own cultural traditions. Though the British being so strong is pretty much entirely due to the nation's luck 🍀 getting an absurd amount of crisis shock ⚡ (and a bit by being close enough to other strong nations to learn from them) from disasters such as the Black Death and friends. Though really any generic nation that got such luck would gain basically British culture as a result. So I guess it that sense some nation had to be lucky 🍀 and basically its timeline's Britian.

THANK YOU as one of only 300-400 people still regularly playing this game I love this! I am still so salty as PDX for killing IR, especially seeing as Sega totally bungled the Rome Total War reboot we are DYING for a truly 10/10 Roman grand strat. Hegemony: Rise of Caesar is a close second and I love the Hegemony series but its not quite the same as Total War or IR. I hate PDX's DLC policy but id have paid good money for DLC that extended the timeline all the way to the ultimate collapse of the Western Roman Empire including the Barbarian Migrations. The region of Marcus Auralias, the rise and spread of Christianity in the empire, the splitting of east and west, the wars with the Parthians, the rebellions, the civil wars, the palace coups- and that's just the Roman centered content- so many nations and people in IR are under-developed- the Dacians, the Arabs, the proto-"Spanish", the Gauls all could have had DLC and content packs that i'd have paid for because I LOVE this time period more than any other time period PDX covers, but apparently I'm one of a tiny minority so fuck me and my wants and desires I guess.

A few things that i learned while playing this game: - instead of using your import routes from your capital to buy a bunch grain, use it to have a surplus of several resources. That will give you benefits to the whole nation. Especially you can have surplus of resources than give you happines of pops (nobles, citizens, freeman). More happines = less problems. -You integrated the umbrians, but they don't have a huge amount of people. Each culture that you integrate make the other integrated cultures less happy, so integrate the cultures that have more pops when is convenient. For example, the etruscan have a huge amount, so if you integrate them, your army grow significantly, which you will need for your wars with Carthage. The rest of the cultures will slowly assimilate to roman culture (there are specifics buildings in your city that help you with that, as well as laws). -Buildings give you civilization, wich make your people happy, and over time, you will have less barbarians messing your territory. There are 3 buildings that give you more civilization, as well as help you convert people towards your religion and assimilite them and give you loyalty to the province. You will need to research the techs for those buildings (temples, theaters and the last one i don't remember the english name, sorry). -Sometimes, when you finish a war, the recently conquered provinces have foods problems. If you have the whole province conquered sometimes it fixes itself soon after the peace. - Magna grecia tends to rebel, good luck with that xD - When you make your legion, have in mind the combat sistem is different from EU4. There are to lines, but only the first engaged in battle, the second only reinforced when there are casualties in the first line. You put archers i guess thinking they would attack from the second line? but everyone is attacking from the first line, and the archers don't have many benefits against the rest.

So laith was kind of right, though not perfectly. In many ancient civilizations, like Rome, slavery was viewed as morally ok because the slaves were lesser people. They were non-civilians and barbarians and so by enslaving them it allowed them to live almost like people (like Romans) really the only major difference was that ancient slavery was entirely focused on culture. These people were lesser because they weren't Romans. Now this wasn't true for all civilizations. Many civilizations didn't view slavery as if they were doing anything morally correct. Instead slavery was correct simply due to the fact that they conquered them. Example of this would be the Spartans. They conquered their neighbors and so their neighbors and all of their descents were slaves. Early modern slavery meanwhile was focused more on race. It also did have a pretty extreme focus on the morality of slavery. This is because of Christianity. See Christianity directly calls out slavery as evil, and in most European nations at the time slavery was in some manner actually banned and wasn't really outright practices (of-course serfdom was basically a form of slavery but technically they were freemen). So once these nations turned to slavery they had to somehow justify it through their religion. IE the bible says that all men (human) were created in gods image. Enslaving a person then was, in some way enslaving god, but what if you weren't enslaving an actual person. Of-course the bible does have some... unsavory passages about slavery (I don't believe there is any direct passage in the bible that says "though shalt not enslave") but the generally consensus by theologians at the time was that slavery was suppose to be immoral and against god.

19:42 Most Succeasful Roman Naval Operation hahahaha (irl the Roman's time and again invested huge sums of men and money into massive navies only to be totally rekt by Carthage or a massive storm, or in the case of trying to storm Syracuse harbour, an effin DEATH RAY built and designed by Archimedes)

First tip. Pin your ruler, and set them to gather political influence. Just leave them on that their entire lives, and check back every once in a while to ensure the mission is still going. Political influence is usually the limiting resource as time goes on, especially because of how expensive cities are (and you'll be wanting to spam those). Depending on how poor you are, you may need to prioritize gold- but that's generally only something you'll do early on or if you're trying to build a wonder. Loyalty in this game is really important. For instance, your political influence generation is largely dependent on the loyalty of the characters holding office, so prioritize getting loyal characters into office. Unless that office is just too fucking important and your only loyal option is some demented gremlin with the education of a pre-schooler, get the most loyal people you can. If they aren't above 90 loyalty, bribe them or give them free hands. That being said, unless you have enough sources of ticking corruption reduction, free hands turns them into a ticking timebomb you'll have to remove eventually. If they have some sort of trait that gives them ticking corruption, this will be sooner rather than later, but if the ticking reduction is limited to around -0.05, you'll be fine for a few decades before it becomes a problem. But once it becomes a problem- hoo boy. Anyway, for ticking corruption reduction, there's an oratory idea that gives it, a law (for republics), and ticking high character wages. There's also some later techs that reduce it. Get as many of these as you can, and if anybody starts looking at you funny, bribe them and give them free hands. If they are, however, too problematic, imprison and execute them, which brings me to my next tip. Tyranny is really good in this game. It makes your Aggressive Expansion decay faster, 'motivates' the slaves, and reduces the expense of imprisoning and executing people, so it's actually pretty meta to run high tyranny (>20 at least, I usually run 40-50). That being said, tyranny also reduces character loyalty (-0.12 a point so not by much) and reduces the threshold for civil war, so the better you are at managing character loyalty and powerbase, the higher you can run your tyranny, and the more aggressive you can be with removing political rivals and the faster you can civilize the barbarians. Ah, in case you don't know, every character has an abstracted amount of 'power base' depending on their personal holdings, position in government, whether or not they head a notable family, are a governer, etc. All that really matters here is the amount of political power they hold in comparison to other characters, helpfully displayed by a percentage value. The aforementioned 'threshold for civil war' is the percentage of powerbase in your nation that must be held by disloyal characters for a civil war to pop. This isn't _too_ terribly hard to manage, because you can generally just throw them a bone and they'll be fine. This does however, get harder the larger your empire is, and the more generally disloyal the characters in your nation are. One more thing, on the subject of technology, when selecting tech guys, you may notice some of the characters there have special traits. These traits will randomly give you an innovation. The math works out in your favor if you prioritize these traits, because your tech generation gets into diminishing returns really quickly- the higher the tech level the slower the generation, and the lower the tech level the faster the generation. In other words, you're going to be rubber banded within a certain amount of tech progress anyway, but the innovations from the traits don't count against this. Also, there are two ways to generate income: trade and slaves- and slaves make trade better too because territories generate an extra resource for some given amount of slaves depending on your buildings and tech. It's all about finding territories with high value trade goods for export, like precious metals, and building a settlement on it with a mine- or a city if you can stack a bunch of slaves. Like, a fuck ton of slaves. Cities are generally better than settlements, but make sure not to build cities on provinces with food, unless you have a really good reason. Cities can't make food, so to feed them you either need a fuck ton of trade routes supplying them with it, or you need to manage the amount of food generated by the settlements there to ensure no one starves to death. All the food generated by every settlement in the province goes into a communal basket all the territories share, with cities being the ones to store the food with granaries. Happiness makes pops produce more stuff, so make sure to keep them happy! Except slaves of course, they always generate 100% of their output no matter their happiness. Anyway, manage their happiness with buildings, laws, giving them stuff in the culture tab, assimilating them into your culture, converting them into your religion (pops of your religion convert to your culture faster, btw), tech, and trade goods. Here's a link to an explanation on religious and cultural conversion: www.reddit.com/r/Imperator/comments/lnrtmn/culture_assimilationreligious_conversion_101/ Lastly, migration is a powerful way of stealing pops from other nations. Get as much as you can, and especially be sure to have at least one port in every province you can. Also, build roads. _Build roads the moment you can_. Link fucking everything, but especially make sure you have nice arterials through your empire for military movements. If you have a bunch of gold and nowhere else to put it, start linking all the individual territories together from every possible direction- as roads specifically exist as connections between two individual territories. If one territory is touching seven others, you can build seven roads to it. There's an oratory idea that gives it, a law (for republics), and ticking high character wages.

Rise of Rome is basically w40k and Rome is Empire Of Mankind, surviving everything universe(world) throws at them. Several times there were catastrophes when they could´ve been obliterated, but they overcame alot of them and survived for a long long time.

If only Paradox didn't messed up the UI this game would've have become a massive hit. Overwhelming UI it's a bit of a trend in recent Paradox Games, CK III and VIC III are perhaps the best example one could make but sadly Imperator Rome started the trend in the first place and that was in my opinion the reason for its downfall.

19:37 Ah, yes. The grand Roman tradition of building up an expensive navy to fight a superior naval power, only to have it end disasterously when they realize they don't have actually have experienced sailors or naval commanders to man it. I love the roleplay. 😉 It's great seeing Imperator Rome content, though. Keep it up!

A lot of Roman slaves were captives from war, it wasn't really a racial/religious things. For example most Roman nobles spoke Greek, but Greek slaves were highly prized (cause they were often up to date on all the cool kid Greek plays etc.) The clothes a citizen wore were more indicative of their social status than skin colour

This game... is sad. It would have been a decent eu4 alternative if they got rid of the character "focus" (more like annoyance) or it could have been a decent ck2 alt if they focused fully on the chars and not the "nation states". So you could play as a governor, a claimant, a ruler, a revolter etc. Because rn chars are just an annoyance that you have to bribe or else they'll revolt. Speaking of revolts, ck2 had such a great system. Your vassals want x so they join a faction with like minded individuals to have their demands heard, when they feel like they are strong enough they send an ultimate and you can either give in or fight. In inperator, a number goes red and there will be a revolt in a specific number of months. Nothing you can do about it except bribe because the "characters" aren't characters, they don't have their own agendas and ambitions, there are no negotiations which can take place because rebels don't want anything, their number simply dropped below a certain value.
