The regret comes when you realize you don’t get to choose your medical specialty. Not really. Competition for medical school admission is hard, yes, but then you have to compete for residency/fellowship spots, which is infinitely harder. You can do every single little thing “right” and your professional fate is still up to an algorithm which is supposed to be fair and unbiased. Even further contributing to regret is knowing your specialty possibilities are strategically set by the federal government (which handsomely funds hospitals per resident/fellow per year per approved GME spot). Any old medical school can open up, but if the number of medical school graduates exceeds the number of residency spots, then some people aren’t going to have a job after graduation. The first year that happened was around 2013 (lucky me). Back then Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and General Surgery (the so-called “primary care” specialties) were slowly starting to expand their approved GME spots per class in order to push doctors into Primary Care. Why don’t doctors want to go into Primary Care, you might ask? Well that’s because it frankly sucks, and most residencies have clinics associated with them that are horribly mismanaged, disorganized, and are often the last hope for all the noncompliant patients who get dismissed from every other practice. In other words, the intro to Primary Care is not a pleasant one. Some docs love primary care, but they usually do so without being forced into it. Now you see other residency programs expanding, such as Emergency Medicine. Another reason why we regret it is often Foreign Medical Grads are forced to compete to repeat residency/fellowship here and are treated like indentured servants. Imagine doing 2 residencies and fellowships. Imagine being a practicing ENT/surgeon/Ophtho abroad and then being forced into IM/FM/EM upon emigrating to the U.S. and then having to work for 3 or so additional years in the worst regions in the U.S. If you want to cure burnout and help end the “doctor shortage” just let physicians do what they want. It’s not the money; no amount of money is worth hating every second of your work day. Unfortunately, tho, the student loan servicers don’t care if you’re happy or not so it’s easy to misinterpret simply trying to dig out of debt for greed. Hope this helps any med school hopefuls!

If what motivates you to work is money then there are better ways to earn it than medicine. I know a lot of mediocre small businesses that can pull in 1-2 millions a year. You can pass it on to your kids unlike a medical career. I think ppl that go into medicine for money have this conservative mind set where they don't want to take any risks, aren't creative enough to think of new profitable ideas and yet wants a big bag every year

Yeah but I think after Covid everyone has found out that burn out and other things plague the medical system no matter what at a much higher rate than the rest of the population. The statistics show that. In medicine it’s a 300400% increased rate of burn out, depression, anxiety, all other issues other than the general population.

@@Poppomatic64there are other ways to help ppl, even if you don’t make money doing it. You can help people as a side gig or volunteer work and make money doing something else (if you can’t make money helping people). If you want to help people and still make money their are other medical professions where you can do that and not invest as much time to get there (PA school or nursing, for example)

I was in tech, had a cushy job and work life balance but I felt like at some point I was getting nowhere and reached a ceiling and I got bored. I am grateful for the years of working experience and having lived my 20s but at some point I couldn’t come to terms with the volatile unstable nature of the field. It sucks feeling like there’s an age ceiling in your career. Once you hit 40, you’re kind of outdated in the eyes of your employers. Not much of a risk taker to start my own business either. Decided to do something crazy and live my childhood dream by studying for the mcat to give medicine a shot. I needed money anyway, because I couldn’t have been able to afford med school fresh out of undergrad. My savings would be enough to fund med school, and I’m still trying to discover if it’s something I would want to do for the rest of my life. 28 this year and we’ll see where life takes me. Honestly, you aren’t missing out. I would prefer to have that feeling of security to tide me well into my older years without all that worry.

Awesome perspective. I’m applying for med school soon and I want to be an ER doc. I wouldn’t be a specialist and make tons of money like they do, but I love the wide knowledge base they have to know. Do a speciality that you love. Don’t chase dollar signs. It only buys temporary happiness

Make sure to think of what you'll do when you burn-out from ER medicine. I promised I'd never burn-out like all the other doctors I saw, without considering that there was probably a reason for it. There aren't a lot of older ER docs. It's good to think about why.

Nice video. Just recommended to me. My two bobs worth. You know, there is nothing better to us plebs than having a Doc that…..listens, is patient, understanding, and respectful, and caring. A good Doctor is consistently recommended and keeps their patients healthy right up until the inevitable. An independent combo of Allo and Holistic works very well. You are a smart young man, you can work it out. This “system” is not want it’s cracked up to be. It’s a big world out there. Don’t let the Uni, ama and big “farma”destroy your soul just for a high income! Good luck in your future endeavours.

Can you imagine someone switching from one field into another? I’m in engineering & applied to med school, but it’s in Poland. The tuition fees might just be 100k, but imagine sacrificing 500k in income. I guess I will be alright returning to Poland and pursuing what I want to do. Edit: If I didn’t went to engineering, wouldn’t have the savings for med school in Poland and be debt free.

What really bothers me about medicine is not that you get paid an amount that does not correlate with inflation, it's that patients are not even appreciative of what you do for them. Not only that, we are always trying to practice defense medicine so that patients don't sue you. Don't listen to your parents about going to med school, there are other careers that are more rewarding and pay more with less time in school.

The only money you can enjoy is the one you get from winning the lottery, and that only if you can hide it. Money through hard work is not enjoyable. My criteria for a good job: as easy and stress free as possible, as little time as possible, these is all in the first place. And then as well paid as possible. I am a General Practitioner, I work 6 months a year, 8 hours a day and not very hard and never on weekends or festivities. And I cannot wait to be retired and be FREE FOREVER. Never again an appointment, a class or an exam or an essay, NE-VER. That is how much I love working.

Do you think there is still a future for radiologist ? Of course there will always be a need for some radiologists but maybe less and less jobs as one radiologist will be able to do so much more because of AI. What do you friend think about that ? Internal Medicine leaves a lot if options for you later. Tons of fellowships if you want to eventually.
@ConanLiuMD
@ConanLiuMD Жыл бұрын
Yes I think there is still a future! Though AI is advancing so quickly, I think it will just improve radiologist's quality for many years before it can ever take over their jobs. It'd probably be 20+ years before we see that in my opinion - but who knows, technology is pretty crazy these days so I agree going into internal medicine where you have a lot of flexibility is definitely a great option!
@nusaman
@nusaman Жыл бұрын
@@ConanLiuMD thanks. Well for someone who is entering med school it’s going to be 10 years before they are radiologist. So not much of a career after that even if the 20 years you mention are accurate. And remember, 20 years ago we barely had internet, and no smart phones. Kind of scary for new med students.

Ah yes, big L for this hero teaching people about hard conditions of doing other jobs - yes, we know how hard it's to do sandwiches for hours, how hard it is to dig holes in harsh weather etc. Many of med students have been there because they had to eat something before graduation. Not all of them were privileged. I am so sick of those "harder workers". During medical education I got scolded by them for being "a privileged doctor" even though I studied and worked like them, and as a doctor I have been scolded by nurses and patients for being a privileged doctor. Never ever have I been insulted so many times than for being a doctor and I am so sick of it. Maybe there should be a constant shortage of doctors, maybe , just maybe, society should recall it was the most valuable worker once in history.

Could you speak more on the “infantilization” that goes on in medicine? From an outside perspective that seems strange, is that a cultural thing or do you think it’s a necessary part of the learning process in the field?
@ConanLiuMD
@ConanLiuMD 2 жыл бұрын
I think medicine is just very hierarchical. I’m not sure exactly why that is but I suspect it is a cultural thing that’s been around since the early days of medical training. I mean it makes sense that trainees need to listen to their Attending’s and people above them - but for some reason in medicine it does really seem like people treat trainees like children sometimes!
