I think black women should style their hair in a manner that is convenient for them. That means respect them whether they choose to wear it natural, straight, or wear wigs. Living in western culture is demanding enough. You do not owe the world a political statement with your hair. Do it with your mind.

B Buccaneer No one is trying to do a political statement with their hair. 🧐Where are you getting that ignorant ideology from? That sounds like something a person from the dominant culture would say. Black women are simply trying to improve on previous methods used in the past since they were forced (by law) to cover it up (Tigon Law) or use skin damaging, cancer causing chemicals to conform to someone else’s biased beauty standards. Thanks for your support though. Everything is not political.

@@idahhale1862 ⚫ Use oils such as tea tree oil, coconut oil, Jamaican Black Castor oil, and rosemary oil. I also use East African Shea Butter. ⚫ Mix one part coconut oil and Shea butter, whip it, add some drops of any essential oil, and now you have a moisturizer for the strands. ⚫ I recommend using just an oil by itself to moisturize the scalp at most 3-4 times a week, probably the same time you moisturize your hair. ⚫ Do a hot oil treatment with any oils twice a month with the inversion method after deep conditioning that lasts 20-35 minutes (I use avocado, aloe vera, and rosemary oil for a deep conditioner). ⚫Use flaxseed gel instead of Eco Styler or any hold gel, but don't use too much, some people say that overusing it causes it to flake. ⚫ When looking for shampoo and conditioner, make sure that they're natural or organic (organic means completely natural, no pesticides or anything). Read the ingredients thoroughly to make sure that every ingredients derives from a plant-based source. I heard that Shea Moisture has shampoos that are natural, but I have dermatitis and their line hasn't done anything for me. Hope that helped.

I can't lie, natural hair is very interesting. And from one natural woman to another, I would certainly like to know what another woman uses in her hair to make it "look like that". Think about it, there's a whole NATURAL HAIR COMMUNITY, so if it wasn't worth talking about, no one would talk about it. As for me, I went natural waaaay before all the natural hair hype. I flat ironed my hair for years, faithfully and never wore it in its natural state. I recently discovered all the amazing things my hair could do when it's curly, and I love it! If I didn't love it, I wouldn't be watching your video right now, laughing at how animated you are about your natural hair struggles. It just makes me remember mine and laugh about them.

However, I honestly cannot even tell you the thousands of dollars I spent on products and oils (not to mention fruit, egg, mayo, and other food items). I spent hundreds of hours watching KZbin videos to continuously educate myself, and many hundred more actually washing + styling my hair. Sometimes I regret processing my hair, but then I really felt I needed a break from all the time+money having natural hair was costing me. I'm also finding that I have less breakage now because my processed hair doesn't get as many tangles, and I actually see my actual length (I really like that).

I am almost 11 months in transitioning and I am glad that you are keeping it real about how high how maintenance my hair regimen has become. I wasn't naive about it because I wasn't relaxed until I was 12, so I had to deal with styling my own hair. Everything ruins your curl pattern, everything breaks your hair off, you can't do xy&z to it because something will ruin your natural hair, and it takes 3x as long to do it. My relaxed hair was so easy, and I got tons of comments on how healthy it looked. (Yeah yeah, it wasn't "healthy" with a perm in it). But I definitely didn't have the breakage and shedding I do now. I constantly question why I am even transitioning when I wasn't feeling some kind of way about having relaxed hair, and I also didn’t have traumatic hair stories from relaxing my hair. Plus I spend way more on my hair transitioning than I ever did relaxed. It's just not the wondrous thing so many make it out to be. Natural hair needs way more upkeep to look fabulous.
@kikoyoyo9806 жыл бұрын
A Laly , Feel the same you do. The upkeep of hair is time consuming & expensive. Got so fed up with my hair, that I went back to shaving my head bald. It's a low maintenance hair style & wigs can be dirt cheap when one finds them less than $20. Having natural hair in my head causes migraines & it's a pain🤕 for the upkeep. Least, the Men's disposable razors & aloe shaving cream is cheap. Wigs are throw-away hair for me. Synthetics seem to last long for me. Wash those puppies 🐶 in baby 👶🏻 shampoo & hang dry over the shower 🚿. Best of luck🍀on your hair journey. If you can make it work, that'll be genius! If you can't, at least you gave it a try & there's no wrong in that.
@alaly10276 жыл бұрын
Kiko Yoyo see, I don't want to remove all my hair from my head, I have never had short hair, so I am transitioning with big trims not a big chop and (*gasps*), I've decided to wear my hair mostly straight through the process. I have fine hair, really thin strands, so even combing out curly styles is breakage city, even when it is not a problem to comb through. So basically I am transitioning the worst way possible according to the naturalista gurus, but this is the way where *I* see less breakage. Dealing with 2 different textures, and transitioning is going to take me years not doing a big chop. Plus I got my hair straightened once a week with an old fashioned hot comb (off an open flame) for at least 8 years when I was younger and I had full tight curly fro every time it got wet without fail, so I don't see how a steam flat iron (because I went out and bought one even though my ceramic regular one still works perfectly) at the most twice a month, is going to cause irreversible damage to my hair. The natural community makes it seem like if we tell the truth about the maintenance of our hair, we are somehow shaming it, and this will discourage women from going or staying natural. So the problem is with the individual. We're lazy, or brainwashed. No we are just telling the truth. I am almost a year in now with transitioning. The cutting and breakage it has endured wouldn't be worth using that last optimum in my closet.

Honestly, the first year after the big chop is the hardest. Becuase as soon as you finally get a solid routine and get the hang of taking care of it and find acceptance about your texture, the dreaded awkward stage hits and you find yourself wearing a lot of headbands, hats, and scarves. BUT, the reward of getting past that, if you don't choose to keep it short, is SO worth it! If you can get past that first bad year, you've made it. Also, a weird piece of advice maybe, but try not to get *too* caught up trying to make your hair look perfect and "behave" all the time. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your hair is to just leave it alone (aside from basic care/routine), like just actually wash (and condition/leave-in) AND GO. I find that my hair did its best growing when I wasn't so fussy with it. Oh, and another couple of methods for product application for wash and go's that you can try are the raking method (more volume/less definition), the praying hands method (creates clumps/good definition), and the finger coiling method (defined ringlets/less volume). The raking and praying hands methods are both much faster, while finger coiling takes forever. For short hair, you can just use your fingers to smoothe your hair for the praying hands method.

Have you ever tried not using shampoo. I know it sounds weird but my stylist told me that some natural hair textures grow healthier, thicker, and longer without the use of shampoo (which strips the hair of all its natural oils) and so I usually just put some conditioner in my hair and leave it in for 10-30 min (depending on how much time I have) and since I've started that my curls look healthier and my hair is so much softer. I use shampoo once every other month or sometimes I'll stretch it to two months and I'll use a shampoo that isn't very harsh on my hair.

Mila Nenderson that's because most shampoos contain sulpates that dry out hair. Aim for a sulphate free moisturizing shampoo preferably ones geared toward afro hair.aka Natural brands.
@Ayesha_57826 жыл бұрын
Mila Nenderson Just try some sulphate free/ moisturising shampoos, bentonite/rhassoul clay, ACV rinses and cowashes. See if they work for you. Not washing your hair for long periods of time can stop some people hair from growing long and healthy. I'm just giving advice. ☺

That's too much love. I loved design essentials but my pocket book is not designed that way. I now use clays which cost $5 for a tub, ecostyler gel when I do incorporate gel, raw shea butter and usually Cantu cream as a leave in.

I know this video is old now, but like you said it was only two months. It took me 16 months to find the products/ process that was right for me. It sounds more like complaints and just the factor of not knowing. Oil is not a moisturizer WATER is. You would have needed something water based. Knowing your hair porosity is a great help as well. But trust in a process for at LEAST 12 months before complaining about the “natural wave” 🤷🏾♀️

I’ve been natural for 3 years and you are describing all of the trials and tribulations of my first year! Stay strong and keep it natural if you can! Oil treatments are great, but water is the only thing that really adds moisture. And if wash and gos are taking to long, highly highly recommend doing protective styles like braid outs or twist outs. Lasts longer, stretches hair, and keeps it detangled ;) And the questions are a good thing! Embrace them...you are going against the common culture and your hair is beautiful, but it’s also different which is where the questions are coming from. You are a hair pioneer. Love it :)

I know this comment is super late, and I haven’t gotten through the end of the video yet so I’m not sure if you mentioned it but you should try drying your hair with a microfiber towel. My hair takes FOREVERRR to dry too. I’d go to school with my hair soaking wet and leave with the middle of my head still damp. I’ve only had a microfiber towel for about a month but it seriously changed my life. It genuinely doesn’t add frizz and it helps your hair dry SO much faster, especially with the help of a diffuser.

I think it's flattering that people are intrigued and wanting to know what has worked for you. We've all been at that phase. As for wash day, I can't spend more than an hour on my hair in any state. 1) So detangle with my fingers by smoothing sections of my hair down on moist hair. 2) shampoo in sections/ loose twist. 3) condition or deep condition depending on the week and how much time I have. If I'm DC no more than 15 mins. While I clean the bathroom. 4)rinse, leave in conditioner and raw shea butter. 5) cornrow or twist my hair (10 mins) headwrap or Bobby pin twist up as they dry and go about my day. 6) at night I'll apply a little more raw shea butter to my ends and apply bonnet. 7) next day beautiful twistout or braidout.

It’s not good to put oil in your hair, it just makes a barrier and prevents moisture from penetrating your strends. Just use water and conditioner and don’t towel or t-shirt dry your hair. Let the water penetrate and it will moisturize your hair. If you have a dry scalp yes use oil, but not for the strends of your hair.

I understand it's frustrating, and it'll always be frustrating, but with doing more research and watching other natural hair videos will help you better understand how your hair works, thus helping you save more time in your wash day. I learned that knowing your hair porosity (how your hair absorbs and retains moisture) can help. There are blogs and videos on KZbin that suggest what kind of oils and conditioners you use, depending on your porosity. Going natural is like taking Ls and Ws, more or less, until you get a good regimen going for you. I hope this helps.

I understand completely about the regrets. It's been 9 years since I went natural and I still long for the ease of relaxed hair. You never get over all the planning, styling and products you have to use. Yep, it's costly, time consuming and a hit to your self-esteem. I went natural because of alopecia. So it was not my choice. Occasionally I do a weave or wig so now I'm exposed to a whole new world of styling. Needless to say, my hairdresser loves me. I would advise you to get professional treatments at least once a month. That helps a lot.

I literally went natural because A it made no sense for me to get perms when all I did was Rock a ponytail when I did have perms and every now and then I would just comb it out and B I just wanted to prove that it wasn't as hard as people make it seem. The only problem I had with my hair is I didn't realize how curly my hair is. my natural hair is so curly that it's hard to detangle and that's the only problem I had and now I'm learning how to do that while wet. I feel like the reason why people need to buy so many products when they go natural is because when they were getting perms they probably weren't using the best products for their hair they were just letting the perm do all the work me I really didn't have to spend a lot of money on product for my hair I pretty much use the same products I use now that I use when I did have a perm. The only real new thing is that I've learned about sulfate products. I didn't even have to do the big chop that's how healthy my hair was all I did was stop using heat my cousin who did do the big chop hair is less healthy than mine.

I agree with everything you said in your video. And yes people always want to touch your hair, mine is thick and I’ve colored it reddish orange. And yes people do ask me a lot of questions about my hair also. The funniest ones are the newbies who say don’t use GEL....and the whole time all I can hear in my head is when you find something else that will do the trick let me know. But I am really considering doing a keratin treatment for now. I really appreciate you and your honesty.

Listen girl, I get you haven't been natural that long, but I've been natural for about 6 or 7 months now but don't pay attention to my profile pic that junk is mad old it's about time to change that my hair is armpit length now that's when I first went natural, first of all, stop using heat, avoid it as much as you can, always air dry, and a way you can air dry is by using cantu leave in deep conditioner, always condition more than you shampoo because shampoo is a soap and it's does take/strip the natural oils that you have out of your hair so what you wanna do is only wash your scalp and when you rinse the remaining soap will go down your hair and the shea butter shampoo is really good but you don't need that conditioner, shaft and cleanse your hair, so if you have a cleanser maybe it would be better for you to use that on your natural hair but again not much, and also do twist outs every night with shea butter and it helps to retain moisture and grow your hair cause it forces you to moisturizer every night and have good hair days like everyday and there great twist out videos on other channels, honestly idk what else to say except your natural you is very beautiful I notice you're not wearing much make up you're GORGEOUS!! So I would never ever go back to using relaxers eventually your natural hair is so worth it but I'm sure we all have a story to tell about going natural and how crazy difficult it was at first but girl your black is beautiful, your curls are beautiful YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL, don't give up on that hair girl. It's really hard for us and our hair and also what I just told you is for my 4c hair but it can work for any 4 type hair and if you aren't 4 type hair I still recommend trying it out because all black hair is the same really except 4 type hair gets dry way easier and our hair is so fragile because of how kinky it is. But anyway let me get out of your comment section, I hope I helped if I didn't help you maybe I shed some light on someone else in the comments, thanks loves I'm not famous or anything but I do know about hair if y'all have questions my Instagram is @k.arismaaaa and my snapchat is @yeayeaakb bye bye❤️

All that being said............... are you going to relax it now? I'm trying to transition now. 8 months post and I look a hot mess. The one regret I have now is I cant just get up and run out the door if I want to . I have to "DO SOMETHING" to my hair because It looks some kind of way.. HOWEVER I'm retired and I'm mostly running to the gym and I'm mostly in the deep end of the pool exercising so I don't submerge my hair but I still have errands and things to do and need to look some kind of way. My goal is to get my ANGELA DAVIS Afro back. When I had an Afro back in the day all we did was wash, blow out, and maybe shape up and you were good to go. All you needed was a good ole Afro pick.

I used to hate my natural hair when it was short, so I started to do twist outs and braid my hair until it got a little longer. If I could go back and change anything it would be to determine my hair type. Now that I know my hair type and I've bought products for my hair type and went out and started finding video tutorials on how to style my length of natural hair I legit love it. I pay about $100 sometimes for my hair products or more, but the products are great and lovely. I became natural like 2 years ago and now my hair is almost shoulder length when wet, but this literally gives me life because 2 years ago... this was ME!!! Also, space buns were literally my life that and buns after my big chop... oooh and twist outs were literally an every week ritual for my short hair!!!

Idk if someone said this yet but the reason natural products are more expensive, even though it’s small is because: it’s NATURAL it’s harder to get natural products around the world. with other products they have natural things in them but, not as much they have other stuff to fill that space. with natural products the have to stretch all the natural things to make a bottle/Container.

Unless you have stupid long hair twisting your hair shouldn't take longer than an hour or an hour and a half tops. Let your hair dry over night and dona twist out in the morning. I usually twist my hair every other night to keep it moisturized. If you want to save time when deep conditioning microwave the oils you are gunna use for about 30 seconds. That way you only need about 20 minutes worth of deep conditioning.

Every black woman, relaxed or natural, would benefit from knowing their hair porosity. If you are low porosity, damp heat like steaming opens up the cuticles and lets moisutre in. Also too much protein on low porosity like coconut oil, will make it harder. Letting the hair get damp regularly also helps. One way to save time is to do have the twists for couple of days, then loosen...presto twist out. But yes natural hair can be time consuming. Also if hair was relaxed high porosity from the damage means moisture rushes into the wide open cuticles but rushes right back out. Repair with castor oil, coconut oil and protein treatments. After a while, being healed, hair will hold moisture longer
