I live in Bellingham, WA. I am from Tennessee and believe me when I tell you it rains A LOT more in Chattanooga, TN than it does in Bellingham, WA.

Lived in B’ham 25 yrs. Homelessness while in general has not been bad the last couple years has seen a major increase as has crime because of it. However the worst part is cost of living compared to available jobs that actually pay a living wage. That being said it’s still better than any large city!

We're too crowded. Please don't bring people here. Gentrification is very real. Property prices are crazy inflated. You say that the homeless situation isn't bad, but fail to mention that we receive homeless people from all over the country. The LHM is currently expanding to 500-bed capacity, which still will not meet demand, and we have 3 tiny home villages already. You failed to mention the homeless camp that TOOK OVER City Hall for 3 months, and even chased out the mayor! That's kinda a big deal. Second, you compare crime rates against Seattle? A city 9x larger, and well-known for being in a slow-state of urban collapse? Really? yes, Bellingham is fairly safe, but it is getting worse and saying that because you've "never had anything stolen" is incredibly disingenous and pretty insulting to those who have, dismissing these concerns.

Born here in '52'. They promised us pink ponies and rainbows galore if we opened the place up to unfettered development. I wouldn't know where to start?! Bottom line is we are heading in the direction of other cities on the West Coast and my perspective is it cannot be stopped. Profit is everything. I bought my house in the late 70's for around $45,000. The county values it at $469,000 now and that's low.

I spent 11 years there, moved away for 4 and returned for 1.5 years. My parents were there for 20+. The weather isn't as bad as they say. The joke was - we tell everyone it rains a lot so they stay away.

No one talks about the people. Bought a home in Fairhaven in 2005. Moved in. Hispanic husband stayed to open and clean out the property along with our Keller Williams Real Estate agent who happened to be a traditional long haired Apache from Arizona. The woman across the street from our new home called the police, saying that "two dark guys" were breaking into the house across the street. The police showed up and confronted my husband and our relator. The policeman told them that it was called in by one of our new neighbors. WELCOME TO BELLINGHAM. I accepted a position at the Port of Bellingham. Hung in there for about a year, being run out because I wasn't a Whatcom County inbred. That was the upspoken qualification. Finally got the hell out of there. Far away.

Now that wildfires rage for 3+ months every summer, it means the easy-going outdoor activities during the best weather are gone. Yeah you can go outside with a mask and have your eyes burn. As the years go on the PNW will be more of a season housing location rather than year-round, unless you don't mind not going outside for 3-6 months in the summer/fall every year.

Don't do it Jimmy. Bellingham sucks unless your a pretentious outdoors lover or runner. Born and raised in Olympia, WA and have lived all over the state and can assure you that Washington state is not the answer. As soon and my son graduates from Blaine H.S. we are out of here-possibly Texas.

I've never been, but I now live in Wenatchee after living in Iowa for 22 years - so, Bellingham is on my list of places to go in Washington. I'll see it when I am on my way to Vancouver....same thing - never been, wanna go. 🙂

you hit a lot of good points. As a local here from Bham, one thing I will say is that rent in this town is not that great... Like it goes up because of Western students and we need more affordable housing but it's hard to find a place to rent that is a good price. I like living in Bham but like it's worth but it's not because housing and rent are so expensive. most of the houses in my area of Bham went over for $600,000 and that's too much and there is poor help for adults with disabilities besides what you can get at western through clubs and whatnot and Max Higbby Center but that's it.

Moved to Blaine, WA that is 25 min from Bellingham 14 months ago. Its been a sh!t show to say the least and our household sticks to ourselves for the most part. If you are going to live out here have a passport to access Canada for higher end shopping and food especially restaurants. My spouse and I were born and raised in Olympia/Lacey area and have tried living in Gig Harbor, Spokane and this was the last try at finding real life...real live people! Not Avatar Bellingham peeps that are proud to be the fake main characters, peacocks or people pleasers.

I want to move to Bellingham to get away from traffic. I like the vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurants. The homeless were there, but didn't really bother us, but I still will avoid that spot that they like to hang out. I didn't really feel comfortable walking by them as they shared a can of beer. I'm just lurking and waiting for just the right property to buy.

Honestly the homeless are pretty friendly if you treat them like they matter and they are humans too. A smile and a friendly attitude go a long way. There are a few that are not safe but in general you give respect you get it back.

Actually it is cold and rainy most of the time. There are 4 months where it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. If you like trees and fresh air and good food it is a great place to live. Every city has homeless. Every city has crime.

I'm shocked by all the comments on homeless. When I lived there for 11 years I may have seen one or two homeless people. Actually, one of those two was my ex-roommate and he lived in a van. Crime? Nothing. Drugs? Someone died of a heroin overdose and it made the front page, as it was so shocking that there was anything more than heroin. In high school it was 20-30 kids that smoked pot and we all knew them. (BHS class of '96, WWU '01). When I left I was beginning to see needles on the sidewalk, or on the path to Boulevard Park, and it was shocking. As a middle schooler I would wander downtown ALONE like nobody's business and my parents NEVER worried. I wandered every street in town from middle school to after college - and even have been known to walk to Fairhaven from downtown just to go to a store, or see Gordy, or work at the Fairhaven Hostel (now gone) - and NEVER worried. Never saw a homeless person. Seriously crime wasn't a thing. To see so many comments about homeless, etc today just makes me sad. I live in Maine now and its big here. It seems to be a true pandemic hitting us.

What I think people don't understand - homelessness is a huge problem literally everywhere in the US right now. You'll have a hard time going anywhere with a population over 15k where that's not the case currently. So instead of treating it like it's a nuisance, maybe try remembering that this is a growing population of real human beings who need help. And maybe participate in work/activism/volunteering that might make a difference in your community. Actually, a lot of these complaints are just general current US complaints, which is totally fair and valid but acting like it's contained to one singular area and that "stop moving here!" is an actual fix is a bit naive.

There’s a job offer for me in Berlingham at the university, they offer relocation assistance and I’m looking for a house for my family of 5, 3-4 bedroom or even outside of berlingham, I don’t mind a 30 min drive to the city. I’m a first time homebuyer and need a loan for it. Great videos and love the weather up there.

I loathe Bellingham. I live on Whidbey island so having to go to Bellingham is miserable. Overpopulated, too built up, and the people are bizarre. I highly recommend going to Gandolfo’s deli to see what I mean. Then go to any grocery store or Bellis Fair mall and you’ll see it there too. Yuck!

Bellingham can seem like a college town with cocky students who's parents have a lot of money. Basic human ethics is a bug isn't really a virtue here. You do better here with a mad max car, a dog that has rolled in poop and some form of a lumber jack attire. If weed and being stoned something you cant live without, this is a opportunity of a lifetime. Outdoors you will have to travel to Baker if you really like to enjoy. Crabbing would be in Birch Bay. Good luck because, it can be pretty depressing and you will need every good mood motivational, self sane human being uppers of sorts. Wouldn't recommend trying any hard substance's there is plenty here, there is plenty of people using them, and obviously there is here some reasons why they would. Enjoy the stay and stay forever.
