LOL. Reminding me of changing shocks on a old G30 van late last century. Had my young son helping. We're under the big van in the driveway as it was raining. I attached the top mount and then we set the bottom so when the strap was cut, it'd expand into position. But you had to set that bolt in before it went too far! I told my son we had ONE chance to get it in. I cut the strap and held it straight as it expanded. My ten year old son snuck that bolt into place perfectly as the eyelet went by! Perfect. He's a professional mechanic now too. Hopefully more professional that his dad was. LOL Great memories and sketchy stuff going well!

Sad to see not Bilstein, recently all 4 on a late model Duramax (like 2018) and the ride quality difference was absolutely stunning. I'm not saying it was like a Cadillac but if Cadillac made a pickup truck it would ride like that. I believe they were the 5100 shocks and struts, we were so impressed that the boss ordered a set up for the rear of his 2019 Sierra 5.3 to fix some ride quality issues and was extremely pleased with the upgrade. Slightly less squat and dive during braking/acceleration and much less judder and dancing over rough roads and freeway joints.

Hey Ray, when you rebuild the front end, you would do good to consider Kryptonite ball joints. I went with their upper control arm kit for my dirtymax. It has greaseable polyurethane upper bushings too. They didn’t have a lower control arm the last time I looked, but The DMax Store has some heavy duty lower arms that come with the Kryptonite ball joints already pressed in. I also used the Kryptonite sway bar end links which I think you’ll like when you look them up on their site. I’m extremely happy with everything I put under the front end and it’s holding up well. Don’t use the Moog upper control arms, you won’t be happy with them, the ball joints don’t last more that 3 or 4 years.

In 1974 I bought a 1969 Pontiac Bonneville convertible for my first car. What a great boat! Anyway, it had factory dual exhaust and the right side muffler and tailpipe were always rotting out. I took it to the local Pontiac dealer for the third or fourth muffler and pipe and asked why the right side was always rotting out and the left side wasn't. The shop foreman asked if I was always hitting the puddles on the side of the road. Enough said. I quit going out of my way to splash the puddles with my boat and no more rotting out of the exhaust on the right side. I was amazed and have continue to avoid the splash, when possible, even though today's exhausts are better metals than the old days were. I will splash through puddles after a long winter to help wash the salt from the undercarriage. I like the first heavy rain of spring. And I do miss that old Bonneville. It had a lot of high school memories in it. Ray, enjoy your puddle jumping with your dually boat!

Never ever do an underspray with "rust reformer" or the black undercoating most people use. You need to use a liquid, fluid film, cosmoline, or even oil would be better. The stuff that dries just traps rust and instantly rots out the whole thing.

Question from a non-mechanic... Why did you install the shocks with the body high when the ones you removed were the other way around?
@mrq12 жыл бұрын
Some shocks are designed to be installed that way. Usually comes down to how they designed the valving.

With a performance shock the idea is to reduce unsprung weight to as little as possible so the tires have the best chance of staying attached to the "road". Keeping the shock body stationary means that only the shaft and the internal valving has to move with the wheels instead of having to control the weight of a reservoir full of oil over every bump.

It reduces the unsprung weight of the axle. Not much of a change with a big heavy axle but it's free. The idea being lower unsprung weight helps the tire stay in contact with the road under bumpy conditions

Talking of being happy Ray, I Found a genie who gave me one wish and I wished to be happy. I'm now living with six dwarfs and working in a mine. lol. Love your post's and learnt a lot...thank you.

Shocking Ray is unhappy with the shocks. They aren't good for what you do though. For light off road and on road daily driver over bumpy Michigan roads they are good. But towing they aren't so much gonna work well they tend to overheat and the valving isn't designed for that kind of weight and motion. Really you should give a double adjustable shock a try you'd love it

My '04 GMC Sierra 2500HD came equipped from the factory with Bilstein shocks and come time to replace them I went with KYB shocks from Rock Auto because the Bilstein's were much more expensive. These KYB shocks seem to ride quite harsh to me so I am looking to find a better riding shock. 503,000 miles on the odometer here.

Interesting video. It's puzzling that the Fox shocks don't include dust boots to protect the shock rod. I'd be concerned with contamination and then premature wear of seals, rod and then internals over time.

For that jack under the hitch setup, you might consider asking Matt (of Diesel Creek channel) if you can use his clip of him singing "Come with me, and you'll see, an entire world, of OSHA violations". Especially where it looks like you lowered the jack to line up the lower shock mount while you were still under the truck. As always, a great video!

Sir you make me laugh ha ha ha, I often wonder while watching your videos how hard is it for you to keep everything G rated, after spending better than half of my life working in shops around other mechanics, I know how we think and how we talk to each other if the roles were reversed I'm not sure if I could make it through an entire video without saying something I probably shouldn't have.

Not really a fifth wheel hitch but a ball hitch for gooseneck trailer. It's designed to stow the ball upside down and flush when not in use

I wish there were shocks that would soften the ride when empty! My F-450 spends more time with the tires grabbing air, than on the pavement. It did ride a bit smoother with 50 gallons of diesel in the bed, but thats not something I have in it every time I drive.

I've always heard good things about Fox Shocks, never used them, tho. Not sure I'm a fan of the exposed piston rods on the rear shocks. Seems to me the exposure will lead to early wear on the rod wiper and seals.

Eh, motorcycle forks generally aren't protected, and fork seals still meet their end by either age+dry rot or abuse aka bad wheelies. Granted, most motorcycles are subjected to better conditions than cars. It's probably a non-issue.
@BrandonLund2 жыл бұрын
Question, mine were installed with the rod facing up...did they install them wrong or is it a preference thing? Also, anyone reading this with a newer ford truck will appreciate Fox shocks on the rear. Fords are notorious for feeling hoppy in the rear. Not anymore. It rides and tows super smooth now.
