I rented a Toro STX-26 stump grinder.

I was not sure what to expect when I rented this stump grinder. After using it I was impressed with it.

Good video! I think the secret to using a small grinder to cut a big stump is to use the grinder to clean the wood and dirt around the peremter of the tree. Once this is done cut it close to the ground with a chainsaw then use the grinder to take what's left to below ground level. I used a DR Grinder which costed about $2500.00, much smaller than the one you are using. I can do a large stump but I need to pack my lunch!

Douglas Best Dirt and chainsaws don't mix but If i can take a foot or 6 inches of the stump with the chainsaw without hitting the dirt it may be worth doing it to cut down in time. If i have access i would be using a 40 +hp diesel stump grinder

Ihave a small grinder sn have done big stumps. Always remove chips after a few minutes.

these are great grinders if teeth are dull it will take a lot longer rentals dont look after them 26 means horse power

Thanks for the video. I need to rent a stump grinder for about two dozen live oak stumps. none bigger than 12" diameter, though. I would suggest keeping your dogs back, though. I love English Bulldogs and would hate to see one get hit by a flying rock!

3:55 I believe that you have an excessive build up of wood chips beneath the cutting head. The size of your wood chips was good (large chips indicate the machine is cutting well), but I noticed that at about 3:55, the wood chips were being ejected over the top of the cutting wheel, in front of the grinder. When the area behind the cutting head gets full of wood chips it tends to bog the cutting head down, and make the machine work harder (think of it like walking through deep mud). I usually pause cutting and use the cutting head to shove the build up of wood chips to the sides, clearing up the area behind the cutting head.

That thing has "Green Teeth." You can index a new sharp edge with a wrench, turning them 1/3 around. They have three sharp sides per tooth. Also, stay out of the dirt until the stump is down to the ground. It's Hell on the teeth.

farmall450diesel Around here I can rent a diesel Vermeer grinder for about 245 a day plus 30 for the trailer, and those work really well when the clutch is adjusted right and the teeth are in decent shape.

It took about forty-five minutes. Before I did the large stump I did about twelve smaller stumps that were growing in rocky soil, I think hitting the rocks dulled the teeth making the large stump take so long. Eric
