Man, Honey the coati is crazy adorable. Also, coming from a biologist, I really don't think there was anything more you could've done to save pancake. The fact that you went out of your way to consult a specialist to take care of him speaks volumes to how much effort you put into taking care of him. Don't beat yourself up about it, as with lobsters, molting is a very dangerous process and a ton of things can go wrong

I like how polite Croissant looks... Instead of menacingly sticking his claws out when you pick him up, he curls up into a ball... Travel sized, for your convenience... RIP Pancake. Wild caught animals will often seem totally healthy, right up until they suddenly die. It's just the need in nature to never show weakness, to avoid becoming a meal. You gave him a good life, and that's all we can do for our pets. I love your coati by the way - they are great animals!

It may just have been Pancake's time, who knows how old she was? It may be nothing at all that you did, it sounds like you did everything perfectly looked after Pancake and her environment so well, with great care and love. Pancake was so cute and she was living her best life for a while. Maybe something she ate made her unwell but you have no way of knowing.. she didnt end up in a boiling hot pot of water as someones dinner and that is a blessing for her and all for you saving her💜👍

So sorry to hear about Pancakes passing. Whatever happened to him, know at least, that the last of his life was spent in comfort, well fed and carefree, and I'm sure he was happy. Like tarantulas, crabs can go into “stuck molt” meaning something was stuck and he couldn’t get out. Unlike tarantulas, you couldn’t really do anything to help him, but at least you consulted specialists to try and indentify a cause of death. Lots of love for Pancake.

What went wrong is where these creatures are bred, he was likely born with a deformity internally that kept him from molting properly. You gave him a WAY better life than he would have had, though, no doubt about that! And this new crab is very lucky as well, keep doing what you're doing. :)

RIP Pancake! Unfortunately, sometimes, a crab can't effectively molt and that's what kills them. Human intervention can help or hurt. It is what it is. He still had a much happier end of life with you than he would've in a boiling pot.
