I RETIRED EARLY on LESS than $500,000 - It’s NOT EASY but it’s doable!

I JUST retired at 58 ½ with less than five hundred thousand dollars. It takes some strategy and a tight budget, but it’s doable! I couldn't be more excited to share my journey with you. I’m going to be transparent about my finances. I share my current income breakdown starting day 1 of retirement. If you want to plan for early retirement, this video is for you!
*I have a side note at the very end of this video, but not everyone watches all the way to the end. I explained tax brackets in a previous video, Poor on Paper. I’m aware that income is taxed on portions of your taxable income. 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on $11,601 to $47,150, 22% on $47,151 to $100,525 for single filers and etc. In this video I talk about taxes on monthly income. It was easier to explain the concept without going into this kind of detail. 😁

Diana, that is hysterical! LOL I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 51 and I have with 35 years in the Florida Retirement System. I might work another couple of years but I haven't firmly picked a retirement date. I like my job but I'm looking forward to change. I would really like to participate in the DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Plan) for at least a couple of years to save up some extra cash. I'm curious on how you are supplementing your healthcare until you can get in Medicare? Best wishes to you and your retirement!!

Do not draw down your major asset. Only use the interest you are earning on the 500k. Live on the money you are bringing in plus interest earned. After your cd expires put your 500k in vanguard s&p 500 VOO ETF after first year start pulling some earnings each year which could be 6%. You should speak with a Ramsey broker to learn what to do. Also you should supplement your income with substitute teaching if you need additional income until 62. Your 500k should have grown to about 800k by then.

Have 1.5M at 48 in just retirement. Plan to go to 65 and will have 5M in just retirement. Easy if you plan early. It is very hard and you can sympathize w/ folks who wait till the last minute to save/plan

I retired on April 1 at 59 and a half with under $400,000 in IRA. I've always been frugal and haven't made any changes financially. Not gonna lie, not easy, but I've worked since age 15 and had enough. Will pull SS at 62, so then can reduce distribution from IRA.

Good for you! I retired at age 58 three years ago with no debt and a small-ish pension, and I gotta say there's not a day that goes by that I miss my old job. And I had a great job! But getting to stay up as late as I want, and get up as late (or early) as I want, still beats the best day working. 🙂

Congrats! Don’t put too much thought in your taxable bracket. Keep mind that your effective tax rate is different than your marginal. You are only taxed in the 22% bracket on a small sum. The rest is taxed in lower brackets accordingly.

Subscribed and love your open display of finances. We need more of this in our public education system. I was "early retired, not fully by choice" in 2020 during the covid fiasco at 56yo. I decided to call it quits FT, applied for and accepted a PT teaching gig at a local college. I began my career as an auto tech and worked in that industry for 30 years. Spent a decade absorbed in aviation, learned to fly, teach and advanced my experience/ratings, eventually transitioned to a corporate pilot for the last nine years of my career. That flying position actually paid less than my auto tech job but was much less stressful and much more fun. I instruct in the automotive workforce degree program for a community college and openly speak about my situation. I really enjoy teaching, helping the serious students and shaking my head at the others. All my life I have been interested in finance, taxes, retirement income, etc., and self-educated on these subjects. I set up tax-advantaged passive dividend income accounts; some taxable (but not taxable as income), some IRA and ROTH accounts. Those along with SS and a building of TIAA plus the side-gig at the college will be ("is") my quasi-retirement income. The change you made from saver to spender is difficult. Personally, four years after leaving FT employment, I have not been able to make the mental or physical transition to a spender. Still fully funding my ROTH and reinvesting dividends while forgoing the opportunity to spend freely, I concentrate on ROTH conversions to fill the 12% bracket each year. That's been the most difficult aspect for me. Deep down in my head, I know I'm fine but rather than enjoying the passive income stream, I continuing to find ways to build an even more substantial tax free income stream. Folks that say you can't get wealthy unless working in a highly paid profession are wrong. It's how you spend and plan that determines the outcome. Looking forward to future videos. Whoever started the whole “you need $1 million to retire” thing needs to be tarred and feathered. 😂😂 Congrats on having a pension too as most Americans don’t. I retired back in Oct at 55 and blessed to have a military pension and VA disability! I also have bridge accounts to take me to 59.5 but I don’t plan to touch my retirement accounts until RMD! I also plan to take SS at 62. Will you take at 62? The Rule of 55 also applies to me but I don’t plan to use it. Dunno how to calculate how much. *EDIT 2:* Granted that pension is pretty low and basically just offsets the low SS value she mentions late in the vid.

Pension & Social security are also not considered part of my retirement portfolio. To me, a retirement portfolio is how much you have saved in retirement accounts.

Congratulations! I'm right behind you, I hope. My pension estimate is $2000 a month, not enough to live off here in California but it's a huge help. Controlling expenses is key. If you lived your life that way pre retirement, it's second nature. It's crazy the things I see people wanting to spend money on in retirement. Boats, country clubs, etc. Great if you have the money but I'd rather skip that stuff and retire 5 years sooner.

Smart move on when you pull out from your 457 👏🏻. I’ve been maxing mine out for the last several years (over 50 but not the 3 year max out). It’s definitely going to be a strategy for when I start to pull them out. Congrats

Your transparency on your entire breakdown is super helpful. Other KZbinrs I watch make it seem cake to retire under 500k but don’t provide the breakdown. Your age, your budget amount and pay including the bridging is how I love to see the entire calculation. I may have missed it, but do you have a video that goes over your budget and expenditure plan? If so what is the name of that video so I can search it. I am interested in comparing housing, gas, electric along with miscellaneous fun money. Congratulations on hitting your retirement goal. Some things on my future budget probably involve a couple more budget friendly cars, windows, roof and heat/cooling system replacement at some point within the next 5-10 years. So planning for those expenditures and normal expenses makes the calculation fun. The tricky part is not knowing how long I’ll live!
