Randy, the development began in 1954 when the Corp of Engineers built a dam and flooded the valleys. Don’t you think there were farmers, home owners and land owners who were ticked off back in 1955? The destruction and developments has been going on for years. The place where your father had a little weekend getaway back in 1967 on Table Rock was probably some farmers land before the lake was built. And before the farmer, it was the native American’s home. Sadly, development will never end. I saw a pod cast earlier this week, where the guest was speculating that a super major development was coming to Table Rock. The guest also said Mr. Morris would love to have a BASSMASTER Classic at Table Rock in the coming years.

I assume the dams were built to provide water, flood control and electricity for the common good. What is wrong with that?

@@timmarkowicz779 Foot in the door, camels nose in the tent. Every do good project seems perfectly good at the time IF that is all that will be done. All short term promises to lure the emotional response. Unfortunately, there is not a politician born that believes in a slippery slope. The dam is built, the valley is flooded and the generators start to produce electricity. The water plant is installed and water is piped to here and there. If the whole water reach was made a no further building zone, the majority would not be fine with it. And there is the rub. The Majority. Democracy, mob rule. 51 people like it, 49 people have zero say. And those major projects are precisely done to encourage "growth" and sprawl. They paved paradise and made it a parking lot.

I've been a carpenter basically my whole working life. Residential, Commercial, to custom furniture. Working on any of the big job sites or neighborhoods & seeing what was once a wild natural forrest turned to concrete & structures always made me sick. I absolutely hated that part of my job. I didn't clear the land, someone was going to do that then come build whatever anyways. But I absolutely hated that I had any involvement at all! Thankfully I got into another skill that I don't have to take part in it anymore... Unfortunately it's never going to stop. The world is slowly being covered up with concrete, pavement, buildings & BullShit!

It all started when the Europeans came to North America and slaughtered the Native Americans, killed off the bison, brought in slaves, trapped and shot everything that moved. When will it end? When mother nature pushes mankind into extinction. And with climate change, it won't be too long.

The sad truth is; the need for humans to have access to natural areas that you mentioned is the very thing driving this overdevelopment. Millions of people with big money want to build their home in natural areas like this, and there will always be developers with big money who understand the demand, and buy up the land in order to turn big bucks into bigger bucks. In the end, the very thing the buyers sought is destroyed. I agree with you that we need to protect these kinds of areas from overdevelopment.

We need more lakes like Randleman Reservoir in NC. It is owned by the city and there are no homes on the lake. Great launch area and it costs $15.00 a day to fish. Don’t mind paying because I don’t have to keep out of the way of skiers and wake boats. The states need to take more control of overdeveloped areas.

John H. Kerr (Buggs Island) Lake was built in 1952 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and covers parts of Va and NC. It has 900 miles of shoreline and when it was built they implemented laws that greatly restricted shoreline developments. I suspect that about 10% of shoreline in certain areas could be developed. That’s the answer to stopping excessive building on every part of the shoreline.

I must say that on Lake Berryessa in California the bureau of resources owns the property 400 yds from the highest water level. It's also used for drinking water. They do allow leases of the land to private entities, but California makes it so hard and expensive to build without enough time on the leases to recover the money, entities won't go through with it. They go through the bidding wars, and everyone gets excited, but once they see actually bid of the construction costs, they pull out. The last bid for just electrical was 40 million. I love it..got the place to myself, especially in the winter ( If you consider 50 degrees winter).

i can relate to a point. My local river was pretty much "locals only" with a crappy dirt launch that only dedicated fisherman would use. around 25 years ago the town made a fancy launch with docks and a park with soccer fields and basketball courts. They even have fishing tournaments on the river now. It's so busy on the weekends I don't even bother going there anymore. Not even worth it because the fishing is so poor now. I'm all for free enterprise but there has to be a limit. There's a developer around here that buys every vacant piece of land he can find and puts up these massive housing complexes that gobble up all the open spaces. Here comes the neighborhood

Randy, we owned Gobbler's Mountain Resort by Point 7 near Kimberling City back in 1981. The water was so clear then you could see down to the bottom many many feet below. You could leave your boat in the water in the dock for a month and take it out and just rinse it off and it was clean. Not that way anymore. Randy, same thing in Northern Wisconsin but it happened much earlier. Over harvesting of perch and bluegills, etc. There was a point when if you caught one nice walleye, you had a good day. The fish spearing and gill netting by the natives was devastating and continues to be. Then they leave the fish on the bank to rot. There was a news story when the natives loaded the bed of a pickup truck with fish and dumped them in a parking lot for everyone to see. The event is scheduled every year on a lake rotation. They do it because they have a right to but really! You would think they would be more considerate of their resources. Very saddening.

There was a time when you couldn't give some of that land away but now developers and investors are making lots of money. National Bass with Ray Scott and Local Bass Tournament fishing has led the way. That put Johnny Morris in a position to build Bass Pro Shops and capitalize on selling fishing and camping products. Who do you think your state legislators are beholden to: developers who make big donations to them, or hunters and anglers who just buy fewer licenses year after year? What would your plan be to turn it around to A) make development less prevalent, and B) turn around the "suckiness" of Table Rock Lake? So you are saying that the families that own the land, that they sell to the "developers," probably for life changing amounts of money if it is a parcel of any size, should not be able to sell it? Particularly after many of those families probably had their land taken when the lake was first built. TVA took part of my grandparents farm and the adjoining property is still in the family. Of course they took the best bottom land and paid a pittance for it. Now you think the government should come back and tell us "no building on this land" after which it will be worthless and, again, we get paid nothing.

If you own a house on a lake shoreline you have a nice view. If you're a person on the lake the shoreline looks like crap. That's why advertisers use select photos for their advertising. A shot of a bunch of shoreline lake homes won't sell fishing products. States should have purchased land along the shorelines as far back as they could afford in order to save that property for the future. Currently, it is the land conservancies that are doing what they can to protect undeveloped land but they rely on money that people like us donate. They do not get any Government funding.

Randy, we are going through the same thing in and around Central Florida. It’s unfortunate that the environment has been the last thing on most peoples’ agendas when it comes to development. They can “designate” all the small parcels of land to try to convince the general public that they are making an effort to try to balance nature and development in harmony, but inevitably, nature seems to come out on the short end of the stick. I’m fortunate that my children were able to grow up here at a time where we could go out just a few miles out of the city limits and still see wild Turkey, deer, And an occasional wild hog on some of the back roads near the Kissimmee-Saint cloud area. and now that my grandchildren are of age enough to understand what is going on around them, I tell them to enjoy every minute that they are out in nature. One of the biggest casualties of development is the Kissimmee chain of Lakes. Every Developer with deep pockets full of money and no regard for anything except profitability will turn this once great recreational area of the Lakes of Kissimmee chain into nothing more than glimpses of what the past was really like.

When I was a kid there was a pond you could get several 3-6+ pound fish every time youd walk it for a few hours- then one year a condo complex went up on the far side- chopped down the woods- could'nt get a bite- condo fisherman fished it out.

The same thing is happening to Grand Isle, LA. Last bad storm tore up the island and then the millionaires showed up. Million dollar homes and the people who used to be there are going to be forced out. Soon, it will be dizzyland for only the rich can afford.

Ive been fishing Lake Anna (Virginia) 1hr 30 mins. south of Wash.DC. since 1978. At First it was just a few homes on choice points with deep water docks. This year after not visiting it since Covid, I think I cried. It was almost unrecognizable. All my old "line ups" I used to triangulate a spot before GPS. are gone. Its not just your lake Im afraid, Enjoy the memories like birdman says below.. Bob

It’s sad. We need more places like the woodlands Texas. If you cut down a. Tree you have to plant 3 more. Wal mart is hidden in a forest of trees in the woodlands. I hope there can be more places like that

Just be happy that you were part of the good ole days. We can’t change it. I live in “the country” and a neighborhood is being built in a giant hay field that I cut last year. The only good thing about it is my future neighbors will want to hunt my property and will think it’s cute when I ride my horses down there streets. I’ll at least have the satisfaction of educating people about what the “good life” truly is.

I believe Oregon passed a law that in rural areas you have to have at least X amount of land (like 40 acres) to build a house on. I am all for that, but it seems to only come with crazy leftist politics. The kind of folks who want to make drugs legal and guns illegal while transitioning all of their kids...

I agree 85% Sad and true. Remember driving down 65 headed to Tanney co mo or 86 launch on TRL, once you drove past Selmor it was wild and wooley hills until you was at Branson. Now its bill boards and cell towers. Nicer highway but a loss of that atmosphere and scene.

It is like that everywhere now. And I mean EVERYHWERE. It isn't going to get any better. Just worse! These are the times we live in. I don't mean to be a downer but it is just a fact. One more thing Bass Pro Shops and good ole Johnny Morris are part of the problem. I went into BPS for the last time recently. Their prices suck! I personal opinion is Johnny checked out and has a bunch of really bad people running the joint now.... I am done with BPS. Sorry for the rant. Merry Christmas.

I fully understand Randy’s sentiments on the overdevelopment of outdoor recreation areas. Most is rampant population growth. USA population in 1946 (year I was born): 141 million. 1964 (graduated high school): 192 million. 2023: 335 million. Throw in the fact that we now have way more STUFF than our parents and grandparents. We now live in the Anthropocene, where human numbers and our activities impact the planet more than anything else.

Theres alot of things wrong with California but every once in awhile they get it right. On one of the most popular lakes in northern California and one of my home lakes. Several years ago all pvt residences, and docks were removed. I guess sometimes things change for the better and theres always hope. Very few of our lakes are actually developed. It's inda rare to see any homes or pvt docks.

I had a recent thought about forward-facing sonar. Is it legal to hunt with a night vision scope? Is it legal to hunt with heat signature optics? No, it's not. It adds an unfair advantage to the individual. I stopped at referencing "sportsmen" because there is no sporting advantage when using high-tech gadgets. The states must step in and ban forward-facing sonar just like they regulate other unfairly weighted tactics for catching game fish.
