My take on the show is that the way Anupama behaves is a well portrait picture of how majority of Indian women actually respond to abuse. There are women who are finally taking stand for themselves but still majority of them feel bad or guilty for being happy after getting out of an abusive marriage. The character arc of Anupama is real and not perfect like how we expect.

But when a male character even purposely is destroying lives he is shown as someone who just lost track but is basically a good human. Like in Anupama many times we see that sometimes Vanraj is guilty and still into Anupama. I agree. I totally understand it is to show the realism though for todays people that see high quality kdramas/netflix shows/anime/web series that can show realism even if they don't have 300 eps to show it In small bite sized eps like 26/12 eps its Probably gonna be hard to sit through due to lack of time (obv some ppl D say if you cant sit through it dont watch it,but this applies for majority of people today and its a demand for todays entertainment market and entertainment market changes by the public demand so its not incorrect for the audience to voice what they like and dislike so creators can make those changes for people). Also lot of shows especially Indian shows get repetitive for the show to drag on and reduce in story quality as they get longer unlike some anime where long anime get good So thats a trait indian tv shows can try to fix and deliver condensed quality than quantity alone. And i get that they probably wont be able to deliver as high quality in bite sizes as anime/kdramas/netflix shows/webseries do all of a sudden So taking smaller steps can be an option..eg. trying to end the serial in 300/150/100 eps and then less and less till its Enough..

I know it is frustrating. The writing is messy, but I can say years of abuse and trauma has made Anupama afraid to take a stand for herself. I tried watching the show and I couldn't stand more than 5 minute of it. But as someone who has been through systematic abuse through the hands off a narcissist, I can say moving out of the toxicity and ahead in your life is hard. Especially if there's little to no support from your so called relatives. It took me five years to move out after realising I've been abused my entire life. And I still am afraid of people, I can't even make friends. I wish the writers could have focused on it more than the drama. So many people don't even realize they've been abused or are being abused. Had the serial gone on that track of realising abuse and dealing with it, it would've been better. But I can still understand why it took Anupama so long to stand for herself and try and move out
@veerzara31373 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The fact that V (the ex husband) abused Anupama for like 25 years and that the ones who stands by her is just her son, his gf and her daughter in law + fatheril, imagine how hard it would be to grow and leave that behind when your own children and mother in law hate YOU for leaving Vanraj when he CHEATED ON HER. And I wouldn't say this is unrealistic cuz I have seen this happening in many household and women could barely leave them.

Hey jammy!!! Seen a lot of your reviews and the best thing about them is your neutral take on any of them. But ig, this time you probably sat with a mindset to bash the serial and review felt a little biased. The serial has its fair share of negatives but, the positives also cannot be neglected. We need to understand that the audience that serial targets is mostly from middle class families or lower class families where divorces are not pretty much common, even to this day. The fact that it took time for the main lead to get divorced and move on in life is pretty much possible and believable. Her own family had made her realise that she was of no worth and to come out of that zone and create a life for oneself is not easy. Even in real cases, many women keep on bearing their family abuse without raising any voice against them because this is what they are taught from the very start that "kuch bhi ho jaaye ghar nahi tutna chahiye, sehn karna aana chahiye". The cases might even be much worser. Atleast in the serial, anupama was lucky to have support of many good people around, be it her daughter-in-law, her son or her father-in-law giving the serial an optimistic approach. But in real world, sometimes even that becomes difficult and it really takes years for a woman to come out of a toxic relationship, because there are many other factors included such as children and finance. Maybe, the character development was slow but, it was realistic. Comparing the serial to the trash that is shown on the tv, it actually is worth-watching...

Never place your trust on Indian serial makers. They can even show her to be evil with a motive of money later on. It's ok now but you know how Indian serial makers are. The best example is YRKKH running for 12 years with the same storyline as follows- [Problem(mother-in-law gets angry)-Problem solved- Celebration or picnic after problem solving-During celebration, a bad omen is shown and ads are put to show the next problem(which will be repeated, don't worry we don't have that much creativity)- Accident or coma- Family reunion at hospital(Prayers and crying starts)- Time leap of 2 to 10 years(Anyways doesn't matter because the actors are the same and it has already been done 2 or 3 times)] I am not saying being sanskari is wrong but atleast show some versatility in your storyline for God's sake. These 2 shows are still watched by my parents and many others. They claim that it is different from others but I don't see any difference between these shows and other shows apart from the celebration of every festival "by breaking the 4th wall". The only Indian TV serial that was unique from others was Everest, which as expected. did not top the TRP ratings because yahaan toh saas bahu drama hi bhikta hai. Jammy Jammy Jammy. I disagree with you about this portrayal of Anupama. I don't watch the show but when you say that she lectures everyone but she herself keeps going back to a man that berates her, it is understandable to me as a woman. She wants to believe that she is an independent woman but she is still a homemaker woman who has lived in the Indian society all her life. She has internalized so much of what has been told to her, what she has seen all her life, what has been expected of her that the subconscious mind doesn't let her Stop Trying. And I get how frustrating it is to somebody who is watching (including friends and family) but it's something that has been HAMMERED inside our brains since we were what, 2 years old? I think I actually like this portrayal because the Independent strong woman who just walks out and changes things for herself is a less relatable character. This can at least empower women and let them see that they have been in the same cycle and help them find their way out. It can also help get rid of the whole "If I don't walk away from this behaviour, maybe I do deserve it. or I don't actually wanna go away: and let them actually see how far they have come even if it's only a few steps. Might actually try watching it!!!

It’s more like women should be “given freedom” adhering to the morals and virtues typical for a woman because of course, rules are different, crossing line is different for a husband and a wife. A man is shown barbarous only once he crosses “his line” i.e. cheats and marries another woman, while going out with women and coming home late is okay in the eyes of the family. This show touches the very surface on showcasing that there’s a disparity in the “crossing line” itself.

5:00 We and the people might not be in agreement with what Baa says but that doesn't mean that her character is nonsense. Because her character is very "real". As much as we might complain about the pace of the drama, the reality is that we live in a society where the thought process has been carved so strongly in stone that it will take a long time for those carvings to be removed. There are a lot many "Baa"'s in our Indian subcontinental families. And it will take time for her to change with time. And so will it take time for Anupama to develop herself. In my opinion, television, irrespective of whether it be Indian or foreign, should be a reflection of what our current society is more than being a reflection of what is right and what is wrong. And Anupama is definitely doing a good job of showcasing what our current society is. On a separate note, if people don't have the patience to watch 300 episodes to get to Anupama's divorce and beyond, you are watching the wrong kind of dramas. Stop watching Indian dramas or start watching Kasautii Zindagi Kay, where after being thrown off a cliff, the main female protagonist comes back after a leap of several years as a successful businesswoman to take revenge. Had that thing taken place in Anupama (since a lot many people are complaining about the pace of the drama), the people who related to the drama would have stopped relating. Because progress is only made in small steps. Also, for a lot many people, the drama has become a lot more interesting after the addition of Anuj's character. I don't have any complaints against the addition of Anuj's character but I would have continued watching the drama irrespective of whether Anuj's character was added or not. To me as a viewer, the only thing that matters is an organic plausible storyline and Anupama was delivering that to me before Anuj and is still delivering it after Anuj too.

His love for Anupama is so pure, so mature and lovely... His distant pure glances, the beautiful shayaris, the 90s music and his subtle dialogues.. (Even his dreams are so pure, not at all over the top - Just that subtle distant romance).. I have never ever seen such a beautiful male character on TV.. I just wish they keep it like that and also wish that they do not hurry up with their love story.. Anupama has to develop feelings for him but it should be a slow burn pls!

The worst thing is, every woman knows another woman like Anupamaa. The toxicity is accepted as a way of life, to some degree even in the most progressive of households. I am not defending the show's regressiveness, but this is the reason that most people connect to it. Also, it is a point to note that, as stated in the show, Anupamaa was married very young and comes from a very poor background, so this is literally the only life she has ever known. Again, not defending the regressiveness, but this is how most households are which is why Anupamaa's actions make sense. Not saying they are right and of course it needs to be changed, but this is very close to ground reality. And lets not forget that we live in a country where suffering is considered a virtue and is way too ingrained in a woman.

The way these mainstream serials portray women is so problematic and frustrating. According to the serial logic, there are only 2 types of women, 1) the sati savitri, who wears clothes like saree, salwar kameez, who's well behaved and who's only goal in life is to live for everyone in her 'parivaar' except for herself and love her husband, no matter how he is. 2) the women in the negative role, who's only purpose in life is to torture her daughter in law,sister in law etc. Also, women who voice their opinions or wear clothes as per their choice are always considered bad and adviced to be "sundar, susheel and sanskari" All this is so annoying.

I usually agree with your reviews, but I have to disagree with you here. Getting out of an abusive situation like Anupama's is not easy. Sometimes it takes years for an abused person to get out of his/her marriage, even when they are otherwise independent individuals. And the growth of any human is almost never linear. We move forward two steps and then take one back. It's realistic to me that it's taking Anumapa this long (only about a year) to begin her journey as an independent person. She got married as a teenager and then this family became her whole world, her entire identity. Of course, she would need time to dismantle her whole identity and forge a new one.

When You are bashing the bad ones you should appreciate the good ones as well. You should definitely watch "KUCHH RANG PYAR Ke AISE BHI", it's a simple, peaceful, delightful, beautiful, mature, no-nonsense, progressive, showing the real meaning of a strong and independent woman ,without any melodrama and over makup looks, giving slice of life show with one of the most realistic approach on itv, all the characters were real such that every character was grey including the main leads, neither of them were right always nor anyone was wrong all the time, with good original music and beautiful dialogues and an amazing cast. (written by durjoy dutta and it's imdb was 9.2 when it was being aired) . But NOTE:- watch the first 2 seasons ONLY, about season 3-although the concept of distanced couple was unique and good but the poor execution and then the change of writer made it a complete disaster.

I feel the show is trying to show what Indian women go through in their life. The first 200-250 episodes were to make the Indian women get connected to Anupama's situation. At least my mom connected a lot and she literally started imagining that we are ill-treating her as the Shah family. It shows how a woman can move forward from all of this family torture but they need to get the drama going so Vanraj and his mom will never change lol. I feel this show is trying to bring out a change in society so that women realise their true potential, this is the only show which makes sense to me and I look forward to expect the drama ofc

While I absolutely agree with all your reviews Jammy, I do disagree with this one. It may also be as a woman it is easier for me to empathize since I'm subjected to this every day. The hypocrisy, the contradiction, the gyan giving is unfortunate reality of many women in India, not by purpose but due to the patriarchal society. This is proof the writing is so good because they portray the reality and show how Anupama's thinking is quite flawed (once again the reality of women that they are oblivious to). They show how Anupama no longer understands who she's supposed to be because her idea of self respect and family in reality was false and she gets faced with her own hypocrisy. So many women are stuck in this loop where they’ve been taught misogynistic principles and told upholding them is their lives true meaning, but at some point realize that’s those principles do not benefit them. And then get stuck in figuring out what’s right and what’s wrong. That’s what Anupama shows. How to fight the centuries of misogynistic brainwashing. The show is also slow to progress because that is exactly how life is for a lot of these women fighting for rights they don't know even know exist. You don’t become 100% progressive and independent overnight, there is so much learning involved. Heck it takes years to give up a habit, this is a whole personality we're asking to change. That too against a society you were brainwashed to worship. If you want a drama at the most shallow level where there's an unrealistic perfect feminist hero being almighty and fighting against all sexism, then this isn't it. This show is for the nuanced audience who want to learn how to gather courage to tackle sexism at an every day level, how to deal with their confusion, and how to deal with the complex and layered society. As someone who has seen multiple women go through toxic relationships, this serial cannot be more accurate. That said there are still regressive ideas that are encouraged such as only the bahus being responsible for the well being of the house while Samar and toshu are out working. Also living in the same house after divorce wth. I don’t think Anupama is perfect, but it’s 70% close to reality which is what makes it so good.

I love watching your reviews, but have to point out here something I find out of place. I am not a viewer of Anupama so cannot say this with authority, but hearing your review of the show I feel that you are missing a major point. Women Or anyone in an abusive relationship usually has the arc that this show is showing with the main character as you put it. It might be slow and frustrating but its relatable for someone who has been in an abusive relationship. This I speak from personal experience. Imagine living 25 years in a situation where you are gaslighted to believe that you are good for nothing and your husband is the epitome of all that is great in the world and you should be lucky to be getting the whiff if air when he walks by. Like you said, the illusion that all is good in such a relationship takes time to break. And as the characters, well intentioned friends and family try to show you the reality, your immediate reaction is to deny it. This is natural. It takes a village and many many incidents to finally get you to admit that something is wrong and even yet it take much effort for an abused woman to think to get out of the situation, take action to get out of it and then finally see the action through with a resolution. Some abused women keep going back to the abusive relationship multiple times before finally breaking free. This is reality, although unfortunate. The likes of Baa and Vanraj who still behave hypocritically towards the woman for having a male friend or going out is a reality. That is infact what happens in an indian community when a woman takes the step for filing a divorce and is then seen (even years later) with a male friend.

What frustrates me about this show is that even if the show has some progressive aspect to it, it shouldn't be THAT progressive - you know.. like how South Asian families are. Progressive enough to support women working (which is very palatable), but not enough to question why a woman's character is determined by her relationships and friendships that she makes (how dare a show deconstruct social morality). I hate that Vanraj gets his mistress as his wife, somehow also avoids the accountability of the adultery, also gets to boss around Anupama, is still a hero in his children's eyes and gets to live with his family. Yes, he looses his professional position, but that is shown as a minor consequence. He has to never answer for his insecurities and indecisiveness. I guess if the makers are trying to portray the real life accountability process of men with power, then that's achieved.
@tanishjain18983 жыл бұрын
I would definitely rate Anupama far above some other serials on Starplus. Yeah i can see why there is this frustration but i think the writer does that on purpose, yes it gets annoying crossing a level in certain episodes poking you out bad and you start cursing to the tv, but the points it covered are not wrong according to me. For me the creators wants to show anupama as a lady who is loving, caring, sensitive and of that sort, and thus finds reasons even from the house in which she lives to ensure that yes I am getting what I am worth of. It tries to show somewhat a naive or how loving a lady can be side of Anupama and ofcourse their this reason of adding toxic but masala drama element in the show, "Entertainment" as says Rakhi in the show. And niw as you said the current episodes are way better and really it makes a great watch with a family if you ask me. On the other side i can thank the creators on just making sure that it doesn't include any horrific pan and zoom editing. Thanks a lot🙏

I feel this video didn't do justice to the show. He could have talked about how the show is impacting society and tbh I didn't find the serial confusing at all. It's showing what happens in an Indian household, the woman wants to move forward but the family cannot stand it. It shows with all the odds still she is able to move forward. I do agree with the Anuj thing that they are showing a woman needs a man to move forward but that's not entirely true. Before even Anuj was in the picture she was a cooking teacher, a dance teacher and had a dance school all by her own. You also forgot to mention how they keep addressing different societal issues like Kinjal's boss harassing her and how they all dealt with the situation together, it told the viewers to be there for their women and not worry about what society would think. Nowadays, they are trying to put up a message that a girl and a boy can actually be friends which our society just cannot digest. I agree the drama gets too extreme sometimes, Pakhi gets pissed off at her mom just because she was late for her dance practice lol and starts insulting her, Toshu gets provoked by his MIL at one instance and goes against her the other, God all this was too much to handle. I don't at all feel the first few episodes were frustrating or dragged a lot, they were required to tell her story. Anyway, I think this comment has become way too long, I'll stop. Thanks for reading my two cents on this show.

the bengali show was pretty realistic compared to every other show on television. The characters even had character development especially the children. It focused on some really good topics surrounding the indian society and honestly the bengali show creators had managed to do a good job in my opinion. I think everyone loved seeing the female character getting a divorce and actually moving on from her toxic husband with a man who truly loved and respected her. Even though he had soon realized his mistakes unlike our generic indian shows where the woman accepts her husband through every horrible action he does.

By which angle you found Sreemoyee realistic? No wonder Leena Ganguly is continuing her horrific, socially unacceptable, substandard scripts. I have only one thing to say to the people like you GET WELL SOON Mami💐💐💐💐
