This movie landed on my top 3 for 2024 so far. It leaves you buzzing with more questions then answers, however after watching it a second time after hearing the directors intent…it was hard not to cry during certain scenes. Most kids under 20 are not going to be able to appreciate this movie. I know this because I saw a theater full of confused teenagers after the movie ended (two times).

You said there was no resolution or payoff, but I can tell you that from my perspective there was. Both of the characters had “breaks” from the viewers perspective near the end of the film. Owen when he was at the birthday party, and Mattie when she confronted Owen about wanting to be buried alive. Owen up to this point represented the viewer with his “wtf is going on here” perception. Maddie showed us that she was a real character who was obsessed and deranged. Owen at the end showed us that he is living the way he wants to be perceived and that it’s killing him. Both characters in the end showed how much pain they were in due to getting sucked into “reality.”

I mention this movie because it's so absolutely bat shit insane it deserves to be put out there from time to time...Ichi the Killer..grab the DC if you really want your jaw to hit the floor. Must have a strong constitution for this one.

2/5 review of this review. I don’t understand how people find it so confusing… it’s so obvious. It’s blatant enough for the main motif of the trans experience to be validated and honored, while vague enough for the film to be an overlay for many different ideas. The ending was so incredibly satisfying to close the loop on what the trans experience actually is. I was overwhelmed with internal emotion.. I felt like I needed to do that, too.

I learned my lesson if it has justice smith in it, it will be mid at best. Not a bad actor, but he tends to be in mediocre things.

This is the only film I’ve seen with him in it. It’s the most beautiful film I’ve seen in a while, but it is DEFINITELY not for everyone. I’m surprised he didn’t mention that it’s an allegory for being transgendered. I think he would have understood a lot more of the ending if he knew that.

Dude, you literally say you enjoy films that generate discussion, then speak definitively about your reception of the ending. Why did it feel so abrupt to you? There’s a pretty clear tragedy there; someone who’s retreated into fantasy in order to smother their trauma and identity apologizing about who they are. The fact that you don’t disinter any of these observations makes it seem like you weren’t with it at all and were not meeting the film’s intention.

apparently sense of identity of the director and personal struggle drives themes and plot points. Should a viewer have to do that kind of research to get a film? I mean...I don't know that they should, personally. But with that context it might help reframe intent.

I think the context is a bonus and helps peel back the deeper layers of the film, but I think the themes of struggling to find your identity, self denial, and unhealthy relationships with media can be somewhat universal.

You definitely don’t NEED to do that research to understand this film, but it definitely helps. I thought it was fantastic, but I love weird movies.

i didn't need to research the movie to know it's partly about being trans.....it was quite apparent to me. however that will depend on the viewer. I'm trans myself 🤷 one big hint is one of the few lines the stepfather says, and I think this one is the first time we hear him speak - is "Isn't that a show for girls?" about the pink Opaque. i noticed how..... heavy that line felt as far as how Owen reacts. and there's points where Owen walks around intercut with the character from the show.... I think we get strong hints of Owen identifying with her..
