my favourite thing about the director's depiction is that they give her a very real reasoning and motive and DON'T make her sympathetic. She's acting out of fear, but she's not misunderstood or desiring to do good. Villains can be DYNAMIC AND MULTIDIMENSIONAL WITHOUT BEING REDEEMABLE. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH REDEEMABLE VILLAINS BUT VILLAINS DON'T HAVE TO BE REDEEMABLE TO BE COMPLEX.

I think my favorite detail in the argument about her being a monster, Ballister himself is shocked that he immediately went for his sword. It pans to his face and he looks down at his hand just wide-eyed. Because actions speak louder than words, and sometimes your body speaks what you don't realize is in your own head.

Reminds me of Zootopia and how Nick interrogates Judy if she was afraid of him. After he extends his claws out at her saying, "You think I might try to EAT YOU!?" she immediately puts a hand in motion as if to say "stand back" while loosening her fox repellent. It's when Nick understands what she really thought about him that she feels remorse and shocked at what she was about to do to him out of fear and prejudice. Nick, as well as the other "savage" predators, might as well have always been seen the monsters in that moment.

If I had a nickel for every time a character played by Chloe Moretz Grace kicked butt while the rock version of The Banana Splits Show theme played in the background, I would have two nickels. It’s not a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice!

Nate Stevenson wrote and drew Nimona while still at art school, and originally released it over time on his Tumblr, which was where I read it. It got picked up and printed as a book, winning an Eisner award, before being adapted into this movie. The story is not the same, but the main characters and overall themes are. Meanwhile, Nate wrote a bunch of other stuff for graphic novels and TV before becoming showrunner on 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power', which is a fantastic piece of character-driven story-telling spread over 52 episodes on Netflix.

As someone with very personal experience with suicide (I have been for the past 4 or 5 years and lost my mom back in 2022) I love and greatly respect and appreciate how it is portrayed in the movie. It holds nothing back but says it in a way that you’ll be able to listen and understand and won’t be “put off”.

not sure if you picked up on it but when Ballister finally asked if it hurt when Nimona changed was not a small minded question because it was the first question he had that took into consideration her as a person. All of the other questions were about him and his own personal being.

I'm 100% sure I'm not the first person to pick up on this but I'll say it anyway. Because it was one of my favorite themes they laid out throughout the movie. The fact that the setting was medieval but futuristic felt to me like a statement on how even as we progress as societies, we are still very much tethered by our past. Is that a good thing or a bad one, up for debate. I personally believe its the real reason we can't get over some of the hurdles we're facing now in our own society - and it feeeeeelt like the mesh of medieval and futuristic science fiction was saying that too. I could be way wrong though. Just liked it on my end. XD

I swear I cry every time I watch this movie no matter how many times I see it. I HIGHLY recommend the graphic novel, which is the source material for this movie. I read it when I was in high school and it's stuck with me for many years the book & the movie have the same characters and same overall themes, but they kinda feel like AUs / alternate versions of each others stories. without going into actual spoiler territory and just covering the basics, in the book ballister is ballister blackheart instead of boldheart, and is an actual "villain". he & ambrosious are also actual rivals / nemeses instead of boyfriends who just got thrown into a messy situation. they still feel like the same characters, but it feels like an alternate version of the events & a "what if". both are absolutely excellent in their own ways, and the book made me cry just as much as the movie super happy to see you reacted to this !! I love all of your reactions and I'm really excited for the gravity falls reactions. I'm currently letting them pile up a little bit so I can binge them in one go :) also tell indi to watch this movie if she hasn't already 👀 no reaction necessary I just want her to experience it

actually finished the full reaction just now, loved your thoughts on this & 100% agree. this movie is really important to me and I feel like it's very good at depicting societal issues, and the depiction of how humans treat each other / majorities treat minorities is painfully accurate

I already watch it in Netflix and watch a bunch of reactions on YT I'm really excited to see what you think about the movie and what your opinions. Edit: Just finished watching the reaction all Sputnik said was all true and facts except for the flamingo one cause that was clearly a pink ostrich this movie also made me cry. Sputnik is a great directive he put the puzzle together and knew who did it and also one thing i hate about this movie is how they end it why can't they just show NIMONA's new form and then end it.

Idk if you're gonna do more series reactions after steven universe and gravity falls, but if you are you should definitely consider taking on The Owl House. It is an incredible show and has very similar themes to Nimona. it's also essentially by the same people as gravity falls (story board artist on Gravity Falls, Dana Terrace, is the creator and Alex Hirsch, the creator of Gravity Falls voices several characters in it).

Expanding on something you said here- and you're the first reactor I have seen bring this up- "History is written by the victors". Gloreth wasn't a woman who slayed a monster; she wasn't even a woman, she was a little girl with a wooden sword. And that single village was afraid of Nimona, deeming her a monster and, well, we saw what happened. This is a Christ allegory. We have no idea what really happened 2,000 years ago, but people quote the Bible as fact. It's not fact, it's stories told by men (no women, of course), all many, many years after the actual events. Like here, I'm sure Gloreth's story was written down and added to by many people over the years, until, with everyone having a prejudiced point of view, it's exaggerated and glorified more and more. Until, like a game of historical Telephone, their belief of what happened 1,000 years ago barely resemble the truth.

i have a theory: when it shows the flashback, I think that when Gloreth truns against Nimona, Nimona breaks down like she did in the ending, causing everyone to fear her and stuff which would make more sense in my opinion.
@alexs.5871
@alexs.5871 7 ай бұрын
That doesn't really make sense imo. Everybody already *did* fear and hate her. Hence that line and the sword pointing from gloreth. And that 'monster' is born from 1000 years of rejection and hatred thrown towards her, and her only goal in that form is to literallu end herself. Also, ballister shows her the scroll mere minutes before she transforms so it's not far-fetched to assume that she takes that form because of the scroll and not the other way around.

@@alexs.5871 what i think doesn't make sense is that the villagers would make a city revilving around thefear if nimona, portraying her as dragons and monsters. It was only a spalla village that saw her transform and not everyone would beliwve them in my opinion. Its just a theory
@alexs.5871
@alexs.5871 7 ай бұрын
@@blackflame6608 maybe it doesnt make sense to you but it's definitely how society operates, unfortunately. like.. look at the 'trans panic' currently going on. 99% of the outrageous situations/happenings that the transphobes use to fuel people's fear and hatred never actually happened and can be disproven in 2 minutes. but that doesn't mean that they are any less effective at their witchunt of trans people. the fact that the entire movie is decidedly and intentionally an allegory for the trans experience 100% does make sense. or if you dont want a current example, look at the witch trials. one person going 'that woman's a witch!' was enough to seal an innecent woman's fate. People *want* to be scared of something because if they can project their fear outward they dont have to do any introspection.

Hilda, it's a show on Netflix it's super cute and ✨aesthetic✨ with like fantasy themes and magic, and an AMAZING soundtrack and ✨BUTIFUL✨ art style that's really similar to steven universe I think you would really like it :D 2. The Owl House, it's a Disney series that's also a fantasy theme the storyline is ✨EPIC✨ and it's also vary aesthetic 🤌 the soundtrack isn't as BUTIFUL✨ as the hilda soundtrack but it's still BUTIFUL 👌 and it's also really humorous and chaotic wich is vary nice 👌🤌 and also a main character in the show is a literal girl version of Gruncle Stan Pines from Gravity falls and also there are a bunch of theories that The Owl House and Gravity Falls take place in the same world/universe/'showvurse' (idk how to say it) and 1 more thing about the owl house like 90% of the people in the show are ✨gay✨ and we love that 😌🤚
