Of course the Knights are bad at their jobs, they are picked 100% for what family they come from and it has absolutely nothing to do with competence. Heck ms badguy outright murdered the queen rather than letting a non-noble become a knight...

The thing I like about Nimona, is she can represent any repressed minority, anyone that has been labeled a MONSTER. It shows the social programming we all have had and how cruel and unjustified it can be. I do wish it had more exposure because I feel it resonates with a lot of people, if they only knew about it. Nimona rocks 🤘🤘

Look at Nimona face when Ballister Boldheart is taking care of her leg. She has never had anyone take care of her before. Also, doesn't England have knights, swords and all.

I think the night she spent sleeping on Bal’s couch right before their fight was also the first peaceful, safe space she had to actually rest without worrying about being attacked or chased away in her sleep, and I think when she collapsed into his arms on the sword was the first time she had ever been hugged (and the first time since Gloreth she had ever been accepted and understood)

Nimona as a character is a trans or nonbinary allegory and I love all the little moments they use to show how they see themselves. Their conversation on the subway as Bal tries to understand Nimona by giving them a traditional label, Nimona's beleaguered restating of "I'm Nimona" every time Bal tries to define what they are, the conversation with Bal about what it's like feeling confined to one "shape" for too long. It's all great. And I love the little detailed you pointed out of how Nimona at the end was not attacking anyone, all the destruction was caused by others attacking them due to manufactured panic. ND Stevenson is the transmasculine author of the original graphic novel this was loosely adapted from and also created the Netflix She-Ra and The Princesses of Power which is equally wonderful and equally queer. While the original story and this film are very different, I can't help but wonder how much of Nimona's character here is informed by ND's own experiences.

@@iambicpentakillCongratulations! This is part of why representation in any form is so important. People don't understand, when you're raised in a certain environment or cut off from certain perspectives, it doesn't erase that part of you. It just makes it so it's hidden from you, still there but hurting, and you can't even name what it is or why. It's so much healthier to recognize and acknowledge that part of yourself.

Still watching the reaction, but some history: Nimona was ND Stevenson's* college art project that spun into a webcomic that got very popular on Tumblr. From there BlueSky acquired rights for the movie, but when Disney bought up Fox properties, they broke up BlueSky and canned this project. Annapurna picked up the rights to it with Netflix and finished the movie into what it is. The cherry on top is this got Oscar noms while Disney's big 100 anniversary animation Wish got 0. *ND was show runner for Netflix and Dreamwork's "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" series that is also amazing and queer!

@@Princess_-gp3epAs I understand it, it's actually quite popular among an internet has which I would count as being "a cult favorite". On rewatches the director going up to Balister at the start and telling him "today the kingdom will see you for who you really are" after making sure he has the modified sword speaks to how broken her brain really is. She honestly thinks that him being low born but doing a nobel job is the worst thing imaginable and he should be hated, hunted down and imprisoned. And she is willing to end the queen and any bystanders to do it. I sure am glad there are no crazy people out there with the same mindset for different people in power 😳

The interesting thing about this movie is that it gives you just enough worldbuilding to feel the story and not a lick more. The worldbuilding is simple and if you look too closely there are parts that don't make sense. But it is a sci-fi medieval fantasy world, symbolically being in the future while being stuck far in the past.

Ill quote something I commented on another Nimona reaction video. " I don't see it (the movie) as a one to one analogy and more like of an illustration of what being seen as a villain and othered and isolated could look like. When the system controls what's seen as a hero and what's seen as a monster, and you're gone be seen as the villain no matter what you do, SOMETIMES resorting to violence is the only way to keep existing. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. You see someone as a monster and don't give them the chance to prove otherwise."

I have loved everything ND Stevenson has created, from the She-Ra Reboot to Lumberjanes to Nimona. Nimona was originally his webcomic, and was his first work. He wrote this on his substack about creating Nimona and it's stuck with me ever since (punctuation added): "I didn't know what I was when I first started drawing the comic over a decade ago. I just knew that my emotions were too big for my body, and I had to put them somewhere. There was no pushing them down. One way or another, they came boiling up, a child screaming to be heard...or a monster...that found it a little too easy to draw blood. From these feelings a character emerged. I named her Nimona, for no particular reason. It just felt right. I didn't think I deserved love - but maybe she did." Nimona was always a very personal creation for him, and she became a beloved character for so many of his readers. Seeing that they were making this movie had me overjoyed...then devastated when Disney closed the studio, then overjoyed again when production was restarted. ND Stevenson also wrote an amazing fan comic about Boba Fett on his substack called "This Place Was Home". Short but worth a read.

Great reaction, the "I don't know what's scarier: The fact that everyone in the kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart or that sometimes I just wanna let them." always tears me up. I feel like how Gloreth turns from a child who simply sees things as they are without prejudices to someone who'd raise a (wooden) sword and call Nimona evil just because that's what her parents and other townspeople expect her to do, was a little forced but that's really just a minor nitpick and something I can overlook and still greatly enjoy the movie. Also mad props to Chloë Grace Moretz for voice acting Nimona. As a sidenote: Have you considered watching Frieren - Beyond Journey's End? Since you do seem to like animes and this one is really great. My guess is it'd be right up your alley.

Boy and the Heron was Academy bait. It's Miyazaki, it's hand-drawn, none of the lessons are "too challenging," it's very much what the Academy considers "safe." Nimona absolutely SHOULD have taken the Oscar. It is, in many ways, the superior story; but it's not a story the Academy would ever recognize beyond the token "here's a nomination, we're not bigots" Look at Moonlight! They HAD to give it the win! There was no doubt it WAS the best picture of its year; but we gotta appease the Straights, so let's manufacture a reason to give La La Land the time that Moonlight SHOULD have had on stage! And what won the very next year? Green Book. The movie about White people "inventing" Black culture. The Academy prioritizes appeasement. Sadly, Nimona is just the latest victim of that.

I love your take on the message of the movie! You're the first reactors I've seen who think of it as primarily a story about institutionalized mythology. Mind you, I still think it's mostly an allegory about being non-binary or gender fluid and about the dangers of "other-ization" of people you don't understand, but now that you mention it there is also some truth to the angle you see. But I think it all ties together well: our decision of who counts as "the other" is based in the mythology we were raised on, which is rarely based on historical truth or modern facts. It is just baked into the fabric of our society and rarely questioned.

This was a lot of fun to watch with yout two, you have delightful reactions to this movie. I really enjoyed Nimona the movie even though it's wildly different from the web comic. Blue Sky did such an amazing job with Nimona's animation, plus the humor was hilarious. My one major critique for the movie was that Nimona and Balthazar's friendship was instantanous, akin to fever touch, whereas in the comic they had worked together for years and develped a friendship. But that's me being nit picky on an otherwise delightful romp. Also appreciate you two talking about the real world implications of othering people and how countries often invent their own legends (and specifically reminding folks about Tulsa, Oklahoma). I immediately thought of the myth of the Wild West which was essentially a vaudville show invented by some guy to sell tickets.

I think that not only the movie but also your thoughts on it and the way you talk about them are really interesting. I've noticed that with this movie especially 100% of trans/Nonbinary/Gender Non-conforming people pick up on the trans themes in the movie almost immediately, but like 80%+ of Cisgender people never even come close. I feel like Y'all might have gotten closer to the trans themes of this film than a lot of cisgneder react channels that I've seen, which makes me incredibly happy.

As someone who went into "The Boy and the Heron" and came out not really feeling anything beyond "Boy, this animation sure is gorgeous" I both can and can't see how it beat out spiderverse and Nimona. Based on what I'd read after seeing it, much of the impact relies upon having pre-existing detailed knowledge about the life and beliefs of the creator to understand the metaphors present in the movie, which is definitely something I can see the academy gravitating towards, and probably hit quite well for the people in the know. However, speaking as someone who was NOT in the know, I personally prefer my media to be able to stand on its own to the point where almost anyone, regardless of background, can connect with it. And in that category I'd say spiderverse and nimona win hands down. YMMV of course. The academy awards aren't the arbiter's of good taste regardless of their prestige, but then, neither am I.

The knights almost seemed like figure heads/ sports stars. could just be an honorary thing. they had that sports thing kinda vibe to them. after all they were there to fight monsters that didn't exist and weren't a threat so its not like they needed real skill. they just stand around and pose and just act like celebrates if you really think about it.

I never thought about how Nimona and Beast Boy could be the same person but yea. One could easily transition to the other if they wanted.

Ah... The Tulsa massacre. Other than being a phenomenal show, bringing thag to light was the best thing the Watchmen HBO series did.

Wonderful movie. Also I'm an adult, and while watching this movie, I realized for the first time in my life that I was non binary - when he is annoyed that Nimona doesn't want him to call them a girl, and frustratedly asks something like, "Well what are you?" and Nimona replies, "I'm Nimona." ... It was all so obvious and my mind was blown

Watching this movie turned out to be a very weird experience for me. Halfway through I suddenly realized that I already knew Nimona. I had somehow forgotten that I had read the webcomic religiously for a while. Huh. Memory can be weird.

Okay so lore dump, the producer of this movie wrote the original comic back in 2012 -2014 so while the movie is very different from the comic the original premise has been out there for a while. The original comic (written by a trans author) was about a little girl being unfairly slaughtered and labelled a monster. Where this movie is about a little girl being seen by those she cares about.
