When my sweatshirts become anit fraxxled looking, I cut them apart, fit them like a pattern, place my fabric or quilted piece on each sweatshirt pattern, quilt each piece, then assemble the jacket. My preference is placing the fuzzy side to back side of fabric creating a more thermal effect & hiding the frazzled looking fuzzy side. My serger is used for arm and sleeve seams, but I like to make a neat bias for the side seams. If your sweatshirt has a logo on the front, I merely use the front fir the back of the jacket, fitting it properly. BTW, a person can never have too many quilted jackets! I love being able to use sweatshirts that still have a use, but upscale rhem instead of throwing them away. When stores have sales on them, I select some for future use. Keep experimenting and enjoy.

To prevent my quilted jacket from sticking out, I ran a line of thin, round elastic with a needle across the back above the waist and it brings it in just slightly. Made a big difference.

For the French seams, I will sew around the cut out piece at 4/8 (1/2") and then trim out the wadding (batting) to eliminate the bulk. Then sew wrong sides at 1/4", press open, turn to inside, press again and sew at 3/8". I've been making these since the 1980's! I loved the oriental fabric, but I like them longer, to my knees. Thanks for doing the work so we don't have to! ❤

Hi Sam. Wow -- you are going to be an oasis of color and lovely design when the cool weather settles in. Thank you for sharing all the wonderful quilted jackets. My favorite has to be the Japanese pink and blue one, but what a difficult choice -- they are all fantastic. I've been working on the Moss Jacket by Helen's Closet. As usual, I'm ending up changing every pattern piece to make it fit or to be the way I want it. I made the pockets like the Hovea, changed the kimono-style sleeves to be semi-set-in sleeves, added a back yoke of knit fabric, tweaked the collar quite a bit, and made a sample up out of a flannel print. I'm almost ready to sew it up in a Japanese dobby cotton fabric once I get all the changes back onto the paper pattern. Then who knows... a quilted version maybe. I love your vlog and as always feel so inspired after watching you with your amazing combo of creativity and energy to the max, Antonia

great job! They all are fun! I really like the long Ilford jacket. For the white one you are not sold on, I immediately saw it as a baseball jacket type! Switch it to a soft knit cuff and collar, many times you can get these as a set. Make it a contrasting color for a pop of color and I would reduce the fabric in the front and put in a zipper. It could also be colored. Stay all cream if you want it to look classy but I think it would be fun that way! Thanks, I've had my thrift shop quilts waiting and just never chose a pattern because I didn't know. Your fashion show really helped me!

​@@sequingirlie I don't know when I'll get around to it; but seeing this really convinced me to do it. Part of my problem with many jackets is that I have atopic ecsema and need to avoid artificial fibre fabrics as much as possible - I have long toyed with the thought (supported by a very lucky RTW find years ago, now long gone) that quilted cotton must be the way to go. And I LOVE the idea of using a warm fabric rather than batting - the fact you successfully used a knit fabric actually supports another idea I was toying with, that of using up my huge stash of wool and mostly-wool yarn in this application. 😅 (It's the same artificial fibre problem - it's less of a problem when it doesn't touch skin but my body still doesn't like its lack of breathability.) The dart in that particular pattern also fills me with more confidence because I usually need a full bust adjustment; so the fact it's there and knowing it's not a problem in the thicker material is such a help and nudge towards actually doing it. And I also like that it's longer in the back - I never gave it much thought before but that's exactly the thing with shorter garments - they look better on me (I have short legs and wide hips, many usual jacket lengths hit me exactly where it makes me look most frumpy), but they can get a bit drafty! So thanks for the overview, it's really informative and inspirational. I have a little suggestion about the video - could you maybe break this up into chapters? Is that something you can do on KZbin after the fact? I think it would make it even more useful for people pondering different patterns!

Watching this at 1 am. Sometimes sewing videos help me relax so i can sleep. Of course they give me ideas too! I think I would like to try and make one of these once I get more experienced using my new sewing machine. I guess they would be good for chilly summer days or slightly cool autumn weather? Maybe use wool in them too for some extra warmth. Cotton looks great but it has 0 warmth. I have no idea where you live but it gets cold here in winter. We are having an unusually warm autumn at the moment - technically its already Oct 1st as its past midnight and its supposed to hit 70 F again - but I am sure that weather wont last much longer. Normal temps for Sept and Oct is more along the lines of 40 F or 50 F as the high. And then once Nov and Dec comes you can expect freezing temps with possible snow on the ground. A few years ago we were hit with a snowstorm just before Halloween. Had several inches of snow on the ground. Like ankle deep snow. And it was so weird to see Halloween decorations up on houses in the snow. So at what outside temperature are these good for? I am also petite and I do get cold very easily. Hence my idea about using wool. I like the pattern - shape of the last one best. But I do think they need some buttons or something. And if its hot enough to wear a tank top under it... That sort of suggests temps in the 70s? Maybe a tad chilly due to wind? Iove temps in the 80s + 90s F the best. Lovely jackets!

I remember that vintage, purple, M&S fabric! They did it in pink as well. I had the pink in a duvet cover in 1974! I loved it but it is long gone. Well done for keeping that going for 50 years! Thank you so much for this video. I love quilted jackets as much as you do and we are almost the same size so I was able to see (kind of) how I would look. I like the Hovea jacket the most out of all of them, but I would only make the longer length. I am mostly familiar with the Tamarak jacket. Here in the US people have raved about it! I have looked at it several times without being able to see why I did not like it so much. Since I heard your comments about the fit, I realized what it was. A lot of their designs are marketed toward younger women like yourself. Here in the US, it is stylish for youngish women to wear winter jackets that are very close fitting. It is also common here to put lining or quilting in the bodice without putting any in the sleeves, which in your case would have made a difference. If you make it again, maybe you could try a larger size for armhole and sleeves?

Amazing! All so different and so versatile. I have purchased the Coda jacket and hope to turn it into a quilted jacket. Alderwood Studios is currently doing a sew along for the Coda (Love Notions) and has a FB page and IG for it. This is the 2nd sew along. I', hoping she'll repeat the SAL next year and I can get around to cutting the 50 pairs of jeans I've collected into squares. The sweatshirt is marvelous. "Sticky outious" great term (not sure I spelled it correctly) but we all know what you mean. I love the jacket fashion show. So fun to see all the different ones. When you finish the seams edges separately I think it's called a Hong Kong finish. I used it when I made a linen jacket, and I used really light weight cotton, like batiste for my bias tape. You can also be fancy and use silk, which is also very light and doesn't add much bulk. It was great to see all the different finishes you used on the inside. Your leftover white quilted fabric would make a lovely vest (waist coat). Many years ago I made a quilted jacket with a mandarin collar. My mom told me to use slippery lining fabric to line the arms. It was wonderful, even if I was wearing a sweater underneath I could easily get my arms in and out of the jacket. Thank you so much for sharing all your beautiful jackets. They are all so pretty and colorful.

WOW! Can you really have too many jackets/coats? ! I'm not even sure which was is my favourite. They each are unique and have interesting details and fit. I do love the pockets on the rainbow coat, big deep pockets are so useful and stylish. I made my quilted jacket using a vintage Simplicity pattern and a thrifted quilt. Because of the size of the print, it took some careful cutting. After watching Rachel from French Seams, i bought the Tamaric jacket pattern, and it was on sale. I'm glad you told us the sleeves fit narrow. Right after i bought that pattern i found a beautiful quilted blanket at a thrift store. I also have TGBSB quilted jacket pattern. I'm planning on lengthening it, I like my bum to be covered. And I'm going to make it a patchwork using fat quarters. I was going to make it a true quilted coat with quilt batting and a contrast lining, but when you used sweatshirt fleece , well that is brilliant!! Oh, the long quilted jacket! Do I need one? NO! Do I want one? YES! Thanks for all the research and the tips. I am putting this video on my saves so i can refer to it when making my next jacket.

Because Chanel style jackets were made with heavy fabrics, they usually had a chain sewn to the inside back along the lower hem to keep the back from sticking out or lifting up. The links were perhaps a centimeter or so. The chain was removed for laundering, which was done infrequently, given the hand woven fabrics. I’ve been able to see several Chanel and Davidow jackets in person, and it is worth looking at their finishing details.

Wow, well done, I have just made my niece a quilted hoodie following a pattern by wellspring designs, and l love it and don’t want to give it away. Maybe you can add a buttonhole and a decorative button to the last one with the odd front? Great job on all of the jackets! Even though I am in Dallas, Texas and the weather only gets chilly for a short time here, I am inspired to make one. 😃 Thanks for sharing your beautiful work and sewing tips!

@@sequingirlie I really like the black one, (coral color inside) where about 40mins, you're saying you don't like the way the front comes together. I think it's chic & stylish! The way it easily laid together to overlap at the neckline had me thinking that that spot would be a prime place to add a decorative button or closure!! My next fav was the 2nd one you put on! ...the one where you showed you could roll up the cuff or leave it down! Love the way it fit on you!

Such a useful vlog. I am currently making up some patchwork to make short Hovea so was very pleased to see your endorsement of this pattern. Unlike you, I am working at snails pace. Ditched my first idea of using random blocks as I realised it would look like a dog’s dinner. Now working on all over squares with crosses from Karen Lewis’s Wabi Sabi Sewing book. Your advice on seams will come in useful.
