By the way, some tech specs for the Nitro 505. Cams have extra deep groove for thicker strings and cables. Strings and cables are considerably thicker than standard. Cams rotate 404 degrees. Draw length is 17”. Drawing strap has 2000 lb break force, as opposed to traditional 1000 lb. Limbs are beefed up and are 300 lbs in draw weight. Rail has micro track that has shown to increase string life more than 50 %. Draw weight with Accuslide is 5-7 lbs.

505 divided by 12 gives you a "Hit Before They Get" value of 42 yards. This is based on a deer's reaction time of 1/4 of a second. In 1/4 of a second the arrow is 42 yards down range. That much energy is somewhat terrifying. If something goes wrong, that string latch is going to be sailing off into the sunset.

Barry James, from Arkansas, 62 years old, 1st Crossbow at the age of 13 (1973). The beautiful thing about Crossbows is that I learn something new every year about them. I have been with Tenpoint for the last 18 years & travel doing many shows for them. I am amazed how far Technology has brought CB’s in the last 15 or so years & Tenpoint always brings the cutting edge of that technology every single year. I have helped sale many of the 505 models & each time I shoot one, the amazement grows. I have watched you for many years & although we may disagree on a few things, I enjoy the always honest evaluation that you give. I also respect your appreciation for the Scorpid brand but it has been Tenpoint/Wicked Ridge for me the last 18 years all the way. I have never nor will I ever belittle any other manufacture of CB’s. I shot/hunted with Excaliber for right at 20 years before Tenpoint. I always tell others don’t shoot a Brand of CB because everyone else is but it comes down to feel & confidence. You obviously have that feel, trust, & confidence with Scorpid & I applaud you for that. Thanks for putting out videos with your honest & personal views. I will stay with Tenpoint as I personally feel they are the Best in the industry but grateful that others have the freedom of choice. Anyone shooting & hunting with a CB should feel that their choice is the best. Keep up the good work, congrats on your Political Win, and here’s to a successful & safe upcoming season. Oh BTW, remind me to NEVER make your Daughter mad at me….😂😂.

Rich, Regarding Barry James post, you see a lot of TenPoint users talk about their positive experience with their crossbows. I know that Mr James says it’s not all about brand, it’s more about what suits the shooter. I agree with him. Still, I’ve heard many who have described having their TenPoints for many years and still going strong! Nobody can deny that sends a powerful message!

The way I’m seeing it, there is a higherarchy of crossbows in the market these days. The elite crossbows are built with high grade materials and custom care. The others can also be great, but are generally built more with economy in mind. The “big five” as it were include: TenPoint, Ravin, Scorpyd, Mission and Excalibur. (Not In any particular order.) The other crossbows are extremely effective as well and will take big game with impunity and get you started in crossbow hunting. Not everyone that drives a car needs to drive a rolls Royce or Ferrari.

Great video. I agree that stopping these super fast arrows is a problem. I went with SEVR Robusto broadheads. I insert the locking screw to lock the blades and then you can shoot them at your field pt. target. It is harder on the target though but at least I’m not ruining the fletching. I’ve had great success on deer too.

@keithhill I second your motion! Sever is probably the strongest broadhead on the market and it is a great call for the 505. Apparently the 505 is ready made for all those that appreciate shooting deer through a reinforced bunker. 😂

I was excited to see you made this video! As you may recall, I bought one of theses about a year ago. Smooth as silk and no discernible vibration during or after the shot. Mine has been extremely accurate. I recorded 521 fps with a 400 grain arrow. At 470 grains, I was still around 500 fps! I took a shot around 20 yards at my deer last year and as I mentioned, it sounded like a baseball bat to a tether ball. I was lucky to recover my arrow 40 yards behind the deer & there was no chance of seeing the arrow in flight. Not even with the bright green lighted nock. I have found that my Bigshot Extreme 500 target will stop one arrow & maybe two, but never three arrows to the same spot. Perhaps this crossbow would be best used from a tree stand or elevated position in order to give you the best chance at arrow recovery. All in all it has been a wonderful bow! My son now uses the R-10.

Ive hadmy Nitro 505 now for a few years, and i alsohad a heavier bolt built by John Smith a zombie Slayer thats 19" longand the Alpha Blaze lighted nock. Im using the new Sevr 1.75 mechanical 125 grain version. But the BigShot 650 Kinetic target will stop my bolts but im looking for their new bigshot 10X target thats an improved version. @timothybird So going heavier with the custom arrow like you’re using may also help against over penetration? If that would be the trick I’m going heavier! I remember that you had some arrows over 500 grain with enough energy to stop tanks! What’s your thoughts?
@timothybird5565

@@douglasborgaro6801 im not looking for any more penetration by going heavier, the 505 has plenty of kinetic energy to spare, its not starved by any means, i wae mote interested in gaining more accuracy than I already enjoy. Getting a more forgiving bolt, im still on the original string and cables on my nitro 505, i always keep track of its ATA specs, havent had to add twist in anything, timing is good no cam lean, im actually surprised how great its staying in tolerences a year later. Rich! Do you remember how obsessed I was with the Ravin R500? I like Ravin, let’s get that straight right out of the gate! I have an early model R-10, which has been a wonderful bow! I have an upgraded hawk scope on it which I love! The trigger on this early model is among the very best! About 2.5 lbs. it is different than the present models. I was laser focused on the R500 and I was set on getting one. As the information continued to come in I found that the R500 was having a lot of problems. Blown limbs, Nocks, strings and so forth. When the 505 appeared, I almost broke my neck reversing gears to research this. The 505 seemed to have all the issues taken care of. I went with the 505 and never looked back!

Ravin did not do well here, the 500 was rushed, they sent out several hundred before the internal recall was made by Velocity. They used cheap parts for max profit. When velocity stepped in thousands became on back order and they had to upgrade all the parts causing ravin to make a new crossbow the 500E they lost a lot of money because they had to sell for advertised prices over 400.00 went into the cam system alone for the 500E. Always be aware of a company that says they are a hunting bow only. Its a play on words from being a target bow only. It goes one way not the other.

A strange experience: On a crossbow chat group, I saw someone selling a like-new 505. They had reportedly purchased it in October 2022, but stated, “I’m not a crossbow guy, going back to my compound.” I spoke with the poster briefly, and it was his first crossbow, but it was unclear how much he knew about it. It was also unclear that he ever shot a deer with it based on what he said. Strange! We all must dance to our own tune, but think about it. Your first crossbow, you dump $3000 into it. You likely never shoot a deer with it and then you sell it after less than a year and claim you’re not a “crossbow guy”. Very erratic! Is there more to this story? Who knows? Doesn’t really add up! The popularity of crossbows is undeniable and for good reason. We all must follow our heart and do what inspires us. You must admit, this is odd.

Hey Bungie as always thanks for another awesome video. Yes, using these TenPoint higher end crossbows, or any crossbow that shoots in the 400 fps plus range, one should definitely get a higher end target that is built for the kind of speed and kinetic energy that the arrows going to be producing. I have the Spyder No Speed Limit target. Their absolutely amazing targets and they can take shots in the same spot over and over and over again. If you haven’t already you should give them a gander.
@douglasborgaro6801
@douglasborgaro6801 Жыл бұрын
@robertwhite One issue currently is that no one makes a target that completely controls the impact energy of the 505. At least not over successive shots. No issues with all other crossbows, but not the 505.
@robertwhite3752
@robertwhite3752 Жыл бұрын
@@douglasborgaro6801 that depends on what application you’re using the Nitro 505. If your shooting field tips the Spyder will absolutely stop it. The Spyder No Speed Limit target is not a target that is supposed to be used with “BROADHEADS!” I understand that no target, at least to my knowledge, is impenetrable against shooting broadheads with the Nitro 505, however, there are ones such as this one I mentioned that will stop it with a field tip on your bolt. I have two big versions of the block target, and another foam target that I place down when I’m using broad heads, one behind the other when I’m shooting my Nitro 505. So three (3) targets all lined up one behind the other and it does well at stopping the bolts with broadheads on them. Yeah, it sucks having to buy 3, 4 targets, and it shouldn’t be like that, but we do what we have to.

@dualthreatoutdoors I’m not so sure about that anymore. The 505 is so overpowered, it’s not even funny! In a textbook, the 505 is so flat shooting that you almost don’t need rangefinder scopes. It will penetrate big game with boring regularity and it doesn’t seem to matter what the distance is. All good things right? What about finding your arrow? What about preserving you arrow, or loosing your broadhead that you just spent $60 for a 3 pack? What about being able to practice in your back yard with a crossbow that will bust through your target and keep going? I do love the 505, but it’s an awful lot of a good thing. Going faster than the 505 seems to be even more of a challenge. Would there be buyers remorse?

I will say, the 505 is probably overkill with 3” swhacker broadheads but I can tell you they don’t make it back to their hole. Up to four chucks now. Sadly the downside to the 505 is every chuck destroys the arrow/bolt and broadhead. Hits the ground on exit and snaps in two. I can get an easy 3” group at 98 yards but I think the max range is 100 yards for the Garmin. Love the setup though

I know you appreciate the tried, true and tested. I have absolute comfort with this bow. Yes, the saying is true, you get what you pay for! It’s like buying a Lamborghini. It’s built with superb quality! Custom made style. After all, you did like it, didn’t you? It’s really awesome! But it’s not for everyone. Excessive penetration, the need for broadheads that are durable enough to withstand the power and so on. This is like the Lamborghini! The feeling you experience when you shoulder it and fire it at the target is intoxicating! My 505 has been pinpoint accurate. Balance and handling are of the top tier, smoothness and no vibration are a fact & damn well they should be! Again I love my 505 and I’m proud to own one, but it is overpowered for about every big game animal on earth! I believe that you could have a complete pass through on a bull elk! As I have said, a speed war between manufacturers doesn’t seem to be as good of an idea as it seemed before. More power than this would not be of benefit. I believe that TenPoint has spoken the last word. At least a word that still makes some sense.

Rich, you know that I’m not a Ravin hater. Of course, I have an R10. I constantly hear of problems. All models and makes can experience some problems with a random sampling of some crossbows. I'm still using the KI Swat X1. I love that bow, it's so accurate out to 110 yards. I reuse my target arrows to check zero and rezero. I don't shoot for entertainment, trying to keep my wear and tear down to what's absolutely necessary. However I've never had an arrow I've launched at or through a game animal be reusable. I'm running the 500grain nitro gold Tip at about $60+ a box of six with tax. The broadheads get mangled and you have to glue the lighted knocks so an additional $25 a broadhead minimum and $10 minimum a knock. Basically $45 a trigger pull if I do or don't take the animal down. Turkey, deer, bear, pronghorn and elk. So yeah it's expensive but I don't even rifle hunt anymore. The tenpoints just feel overall better and more solid than the majority of the bows on the market. Their wicked ridge line reminds me of the quality that Parker used to build in their crossbows. The tenpoints are a step above that. Let your daughter try a viper 430 or turbo s1 and i bet she'll fall in love with it over the Excalibur. From time to time, I see some confusion that is created between some advertisers and posters in chat groups. It’s important for prospective 505 customers or perhaps new 505 owners to understand that products like targets, broadheads and so forth May work well with other “high speed” crossbows, but Do Not necessarily work with the 505. Some clarification would helpful to save a few people some grief.

I have seen in numerous chat rooms that some hunters continue to compare their 420, 450 or 470 fps crossbows with the 505. If 470 fps is good, 505 is better right? It’s in our nature to compare based on what we know. Truth is, it’s not true. When surpassing 500 fps there is no direct comparison. With the 470 fps crossbow I can still find numerous targets that will handle it. I can find the broadheads that will still function properly. Overall, I can still be reasonably assured that I will find my arrow every time. Not so with the 505! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love my 505 and I’m glad I have it! The truth is that there are consequences when you go this fast! Over penetration! It is what it is! My point is that going faster is not a good idea in the long run. The consequences will be more substantial. The market will decide and I will tell you I told you so. The 505 is the last realistic word in crossbow performance. The energy produced by the 505 is beyond what any big game hunter will ever need. I don’t look the same way at the idea of a speed war.

I've posted before that I have the Vapor RS 470, which is not as fast as this one, but was their top of the line that was replaced by the 505. I didn't even think about it shooting thru a target and my first shot was on a cheap target I got for my vertical bow. I was able to find the arrow, but yeah it went right thru. So, at that point it was find new targets. I got the one that I believe your friend had on the right of the two, it stops my xbow no issues with field points. I went with broadheads from Sevr and by the way I really like those also, but they have a really nice "block/foam" target that is rated for these fast bows. DO NOT SHOOOT FIELD POINTS AT THAT TARGET!, unless you use arrow lube and have some good pullers... that being said, I can shoot broadheads at it and they are stopped in the first 4/6" .. and they pull super super easy. So, if you have a fast bow and are looking for a broadhead target, the Sevr one is pretty nice and has some really nice features to it also.

@keepsummersafe You mention some great points! Still, when you go beyond the 470 in speed it seems to make life more complicated. I have some friends that use the 470 and they can find targets that are up to the task. It’s just harder to find such targets with the 505, particularly with more than one shot at one bullseye. Many haven’t even figured out what broadheads are best at this point. Although many understand that SEVR is strong enough for anything. Broadheads that are not constructed with enough durability will become a mangled, single use mess with 505 speed. It all seems more complicated because many of the standards and gear that goes well with any other crossbow, will not necessarily go with the 505. I’m hoping for a target to be made that will stand up even better than the kinetic 650. With impact energy of up to 260+ ft lbs, I’m not even sure it’s possible to create an archery target that will cover it perfectly. Fingers crossed! I love fast crossbows and new technology, but with over penetration issues and such, I have no one to blame but myself. I asked for it. I love it but there should be a disclaimer. 😂

Here’s a quote from a 1993 book called: “Bow hunting big game” by Dan Dietrich, chapter 10 (working toward a silent hunt), pages 105-106: “An arrow fired from your bow at 250 fps (roughly one fourth the speed of sound) will reach a deer 30 yards away in .36 second. However, the sound of the arrow’s release will reach the deer in .08 second, leaving about .25 second or so for the deer to react. Researchers say that deer can react to an outside stimulus in .10 second or less. This gives the deer more than enough time to “jump the string”. However, if you could double the speed of your arrow to 500 fps, you would cut the time it takes the arrow to reach the deer in half (.18 second). Then, the arrow would arrive in the same amount of time that it would normally take for the deer to hear the shot and react to it. That doesn’t appear to be possible. It simply is not possible with current technology to accurately shoot a broadhead tipped arrow 500 fps at a target 30 yards away. Game, therefore, probably always will be able to hear the sound of the arrow’s release before it reaches the target. And game, therefore, will always have the opportunity to flinch or move or jump. A bow hunter might as well accept that fact and move on in his quest to quiet his hunt”

The subject has been debated over and over again, but I must say that after shooting the 505 I can’t say that any manufacturer will go any further with speed. Sure, I could be wrong, but with the extreme level of power and speed, the question presents, is more power and speed better? Is a crossbow with more speed than the 505 practical? I am not really a devout follower of practicality. Hell, like many others I’m looking for performance! Still, after shooting the 505 I say absolutely not! I’m not trying to be a party pooper, but the 505 is capable of producing more energy at 70 yards than the R500 at point blank, when the right arrow is used. Unless you’re hunting in the Jurassic Park, there’s no real reason for any more power than what the 505 can produce. As Rich said, a problem can be over penetration. This is true! I’m not trying to discourage further advances in technology. By no means! It’s just the simple truth that the 505 is overpowered for almost any game in the world. When your arrow blows through a 50 yard archery target, or travels a half football field behind your deer, perhaps it gives one a bit of pause to ask the question; how much more do I need? This is a question of rhetorical nature, but think about it. I don’t believe I had this idea before purchasing the 505, but seeing is believing. Holy smokes! 😂
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie Жыл бұрын
That is where I am torn, I don't necessarily want more penetration although I can always use a bigger broadhead! But I do want more speed, because getting the arrow there reduces the likelihood of deer jumping the strain. It increases the flatness of the trajectory. So it has advantages Beyond just penetration. It is a catch-22 though!
@douglasborgaro6801
@douglasborgaro6801 Жыл бұрын
You know, Another question is equipment. The 505 will pound a dinner plate through a deer, but will that dinner plate be in tact once it hits? Only the strongest broadheads are necessary for the 505. All of the equations that hold true for 99 percent of other crossbows are suddenly different for the 505. The good news is, yes there are broadheads out there that are up to the task, but this is something to be aware of. The broadheads capable of 505 performance will likely not be the most economical. Nonetheless, you don’t buy a 505 with economy as a priority. Don’t get me wrong, I love my 505! It’s a smooth and great shooter! But when I speculate about a potential “speed war” between manufacturers, I don’t really think it works. These are things we have all asked for. Now that there is such a crossbow out there that can do what the 505 does, it may create a consumer vacuum, so to speak. I will use my 505 every year. More power than the 505 may just create multi-prong problems. This is a part of the catch-22.

Absolutely amazing these crossbows. I think One eye here also did the best thing upping the wight just enough that the grains meet the exact fps. With this sort of weapon there really is nothing to considerably test. What i mean is this is not a back yard plinker and hunting bow. It is strictly a hunting bow because you will just damage targets and bolts all the time after a while. And thats an expensive target. Basically with this figure out what you want to shoot and make it fly. Over one slug of momentum at ethical ranges you really have nothing to worry about at all. Sight in leave it alone go hunt. The cons with these new styles… i really hate the trigger unit being a part of the cocking cranking system. I really do not like that. But thats my preference to not have that.

My biggest gripe with TenPoint is their lack of a true anti dryfire system. You cannot fire a Barnett, Scorpyd or a new Excalibur without the arrow being fully seated on the string. Tenpoint you absolutely can. And you will be sending that bow back for repair. A $3000 bow that does not have equally the same amount of safety features some $300 Barnett has obviously missed the mark. 505fps or not.

I get that some need the best and fastest..But with most companies making bows in the 400fps plus range that will take any whitetail...I will stick with my less expensive bow and spend money on better arrows and scope..,,Bunjie is a tried and true.

@racingruss Just because your bow doesn’t achieve 500 fps doesn’t mean that it’s not a wonderful bow that is capable of doing anything you need. I have a sickness, it’s called obsession. That’s why I wanted to try the 505. I also have a Ravin R-10 and it is an absolutely amazing bow. There are many times that I miss taking it with me hunting. My son uses it now. It is every bit as fantastic for many reasons. I will never give it up!

👍🏻 definitely need the fat bullet style target tips!! I have the same “650 ke” target and I am blowing through it with all my Ravin X-bows using White Water precision field points. 406-509fps is the speed I’m shooting through 4 different Ravins. Really having a hard time finding bullet style 150gr tips! Any help would be appreciated 😊 Thanks, Wisconsin Mike
