One of these days, someone is going to invent square and/or rectangular pieces of metal, so we don't have to do so much work on round pieces. I know we're not there yet technologically, but maybe one day in the future.

When you make a hole in the tool post using a twist drill revolving from the mandrill that hole is in line with the lather centre for all applications.
@tedhansen2830
@tedhansen2830 2 ай бұрын
@@ValMartinIreland only if you are using a fixed height turret tool holder instead of a QCTP, and only if every boring bar has the same shaft diameter and has cutting tip positioned exactly at centre height. And it is still a poor diy video. A diy instruction should start out with an overall description of what is being made, and a materials list. If it is an unusual design, the benefits of the design should also be described. Instead, we the viewers are subjected to a lot of shots of things going around and shiny chips being made without knowing what the project is. This is true no matter what the project.

Great idea! You start having problems when using detachable tool holders as the holder starts getting further away from the tool post. Great work shop. Also facing with three jaw self centring chucks can be dangerous we all do it but work piece flying out is quite possible outcome, independent 4 jaws is the safe way of doing this obviously. But a great handy boring bar holder👍

When he has a mill , why not machine the round in there rather than incorrect/unsafe use of lathe chuck ?
@lesterbuckman5493
@lesterbuckman5493 28 күн бұрын
@@IAN-ev8qzMainly because it’s convenient, a lot of people don’t have the right milling cutters and is faster in lathe. You should just do it in the independent four jaw chuck as opposed to the self centring three jaw chuck( the independent 4 jaw has three times the gripping power of the self centring 3 jaw)

I've made a bunch these boring bar holders for three lathes at work. Only difference is after I bored hole for bar, say 25mm one I offset block and made the hole oval towards the top. That way the bars slide in easily and when tightened sit exactly on centre height. Also made a bunch of sleeves the same way so a 12 mm bar can be swapped in.
