Nice. If you mount it on a large piece of angle, you can use a few points of contact by welding or bolting it to the railing and floor instead of just the floor. Then when its higher, you can put a cover on it pretty easy, keep it lasting long. Love these videos.

@fredupson94895 жыл бұрын
If you had gotten an old 2” trailer hitch you could have mounted the hitch on the front stop bar. It would put the winch higher for easier recovery. You could then get a winch Mount to go in receiver hitch. This way you could remove the winch for indoor storage and use in on your truck too. I put a front receiver hitch on my ford for the winch. Instead of a separate battery, I bought a 20’ set of #2 gage battery jumper cables. I put quick disconnects on the winch cable and jumper cables. I cut the jumper cables two feet shorter and put quick connectors on both ends so they could still be used as jumpers. I can use the truck battery to run the winch and have a set of long jumper cables. The cables can be stored in the truck or with the winch. The truck battery is better because with the truck running the winch will pull better. The battery on the trailer will die fast when doing heavy winching and will leave you worse off than not having a winch. Also to way you always know If the battery is good because the truck runs. Doing this gives you more uses for the winch. I also got a wireless remote for my winch so I can run it up to 50’ away. Good if you have to steer the vehicle onto the trailer. If you take the battery off the trailer you can put a storage box on the front for storing all the straps and stuff used for towing.

Tip from your helpful Triple A man. When pulling a vehicle up-on the trailer tie down the steering, I use two 2" ratchet straps affixing them to the steering wheel and then down to the seat mounts. This keeps the steering straight. also when you run your cable out make sure you "DO NOT run it completely out". leave several wraps around the spool. You will also want to get a couple pulleys / snatch block for when you are pulling up heavier vehicles. The winching will go slower but the amount of pull is substantial when you use the pulleys/snatch block. You run the cable to the vehicle attach the pully using a chain to a pull point or the frame then take cable back to an attachment point on the trailer.
IMPORTANT Matt, I am not positive but it looks like you mounted the winch only using the thin steel floor plate as a anchor. If that is how you did it please consider remounting that winch before use. You need to secure that winch to the frame of the trailer. On a heavy pull it will pull the bolts through the steel floor.
@polishjerk5 жыл бұрын
Yep, and that mounting plate thet the winch sits in seems to be backwards. The winch is going to be pulling the more narrow side of it up, and it has less bolts holding it in place compared to the wider one.

Did you watch the video? There are backing plates/spreader plates on the underside of the decking. It would be impossible to pull those bolts through the decking with those plates. (With that winch) There are 6 bolts, spreading the load over about 1.5 ft^2 of steel decking, and there are spreader bars on 4 of those bolts. The force is a shear force, not a force axial to the bolts. The force vector quantity is about 5° from parallel to the deck. So it will be fine for 8000# of pulling force going up the ramp.

Mat you put the winch in the wrong place look at the shape of the winch plate and the angle of the A frame of the draw bar on the trailer

That's pretty cool! I did machinist work at WARN a couple years ago! I thought a couple times that I should have them send one to you to shoot on demo ranch and see if it still worked after the 50 BMG. You should probably ask them if they can do that!

Just a suggestion, put a locking truck tool box on the front of that trailer so that you can hold straps and other stuff for your trailer and transporting

Always grind the paint off the metal first before you weld.

I saw a video on Instagram of this Jeep stuck in mud and was being pulled by another truck out but the winch detached from the other truck and went straight into the wind shield of the Jeep and literally broke the guys whole head

You should get a wireless controller so you can winch and steer at the same time.

You didn't put lock washers on the bolts! Maybe tack them with the welder so they don't back off from vibration. Love you guys.

You need a bridal to equalize the pull. Note: When you are loading a heavy load you can lift the rear tires of the tow vehicle off the ground and the tow vehicle will roll on a slope.

Matt to save you from having to steer the car on the trailer use a Tow Chain with two hooks. And hook them in the little ports behind the wheels. I'm a tow truck driver trust me.

Take the paint off of the object to be welded. Now get 4-point tie downs for safety, Something I learned watching Ron Pratts KZbin channel. He owns Mid-West Truck, Inc. He explains everything also says slow moves make the job better. and easier. Now, what did I mean by 4-0point tie downs? It's simple, making sure that the wheels can't move in any direction. Each wheel is attached with what looks like a tie-down for an auto trailer or hauler. The strap goes around the tire and attaches in two directions, this is done on each wheel. Do not rely on the winch to hold the vehicle on the trailer, otherwise, you'll end up buying a new winch. That is what the 4-point tie downs help save. Now should you go Hog-Wild and really go overboard, get a flatbed that will slide back and lower tot he ground. The winch is there. There are tie-down holes for the other equipment to make the vehicle safe. You will look like a recovery truck, which is exactly what it is.

Need a winch cover though. Sitting out in the field will rust it

Hey Matt You should invest in a unibit. It makes perfectly smooth holes without any metal shards hanging off of the other ends. Also they are like 10 sizes in one, super handy! Just don’t tell mere 😆
