Literally all of music production is unconsciously felt by people. If they’re not musicians they won’t notice anything aside from “singer” and “background music” and even if they’re musicians they won’t know what exactly you have done during the production phase.

instead of adding delay to the end of a vocal, you can put the delay on a separate mixer track and sidechain it to the vocal signal so it automatically only plays when the vocal isn't playing

Or put it on a send bus and automate the track send so it only delays the vocal parts you want

Another tip is adding “gross beat” to the th reverb and bussing the vocals over so only the reverb is effected. Then you simply just have to automate the on/off on the gross beat when you wanna hear the fx

you can also create automation for filters and effects in vst's. automating low passes sounds pretty crisp as well as phasers, the main waveshape (attack/sustain/release), and vsts also typically have their own reverb, delay, chorus, compression, and distortion effects.
