Great training! I don't doubt that ketones have benefit, but I believe to keep talking about such this much you're either getting placebo/mental benefits of expecting more (aka mind power makes a huge difference) or you're sponsored because there's no way something is going to make that huge of a difference that immediately. Besides, we know the brain and body loves to run off of glucose, and for strength intensive purposes we need glucose to perform at peak strength... lots of people who switch to a keto diet wind up losing max strength output and ketosis only happens after being depleted... I think it'd be much easier to consume some simple carbs like a gatorade or sugary drink during the workout to keep topped off than to rely on ketones.
@halfnattyboomer3545 ай бұрын
Mm having high ketone levels while well sated isn't normal for the body. There could be something to it with regard to CNS output but who knows, unless some can explain that one mechanistically I'd put it in the heavily fringe area of science based training.

Our brain does not use ketones at rest. Our brain can use ketones in certain states, but glucose is the primary fuel for our brain. Look at CSF--it doesn't have a set amount of ketones, but the glucose levels are pretty darn stable across people. If I was a betting man, I would bet there is a weak signal from ketones, probably related to the sympathetic nervous system, which will fire up gluconeogenesis, but it is probably really weak relative to to the stimulation of glucose. Just an educated guess, probably a G-protein coupled receptor or something nerdy that gets shut off by normal glucose levels.

I never thought Ketones would be beneficial to weight training. Reason being the body typically burns carbohydrates to fuel muscles when you’re active. Ketone supplements can help an athlete consuming carbohydrates last longer during an activity without having to re-fuel. That is 100% beneficial to endurance athletes, who have to consume calories in order to preform firing an activity. However, a strength and power athlete (sprinters, football players) will typically experience a decrease in performance due to the difference in energy systems being used, as the body typically functions better when it’s burning carbohydrates, especially for shorter periods of activity. Military will use it as on the battlefield soldiers may benefit from not burning carbohydrates in the same manner as endurance athletes. Anyways, enjoyed your video very awesome to watch, as you are one incredibly powerful individual. Truly impressive!

As long as you remain hydrated, you won't necessarily need ketones or if you stick to a well rounded diet. When you're dehydrated, you can see ketones being passed through urine. Also, if I remember correctly, ketones in urine is a sign of protein and carbohydrate breakdown. Its been a minute since college though. However, as far as its effectiveness through supplementation, I think there needs to be more research on them before I would spend the money.

My understanding of ketones is that they are used in the citric acid cycle during aerobic respiration. It is also my understanding that the central nervous system can only use glucose for energy. Therefore, taking endogenous ketones can spare glucose and fat breakdown. That’s assuming that the ketones you take make it inside of your cells and can be converted to acetyl-CoA.

The results of the referenced study are strange. It seems the big effect is that the control group was operating in a caloric deficit whereas the KE(tone) group increased caloric intake via mostly carbs. Is the improved performance due to the increased carbs and the KE had little effect? The paper appears to minimize this difference and attributes the blunting of overreaching to KE instead of the overall increase in dietary calories; I am skeptical. They make a lot of assumptions in the discussion at the end. Perhaps an academic can review and chime in. In the end, it is only one study. My limited googling suggests that results are mixed on supplementation. Most studies appear to be in relation to longer duration / endurance performance vs. short duration intense exercise.

Similar experience reading a few studies and also would love an academics perspectives. I have a friend that might know more. Will come back with another comment if I get any additional info.

Ketones are produced naturally and a product is not needed. What I want to know is how long Mitch has been training for this PB? 900 is a big number but nowhere near the 505 kg he says he will do soon in competition. I lift only half as much but then I'm half his weight, double his age, and have a bad back. I'm not done yet however. Been training about a year so feel there are still potential gains there. I now feel I should ease it back to fortnightly for maximum working sets. I don't feel it will cause strength loss.

The video is an ad. Did you watch it?

@@JeffO- yes but I only saw him talking about ketones in his opening speech. Didn't see any product advertised.

@@mitchellhooperstrongman nah, I have a rule anything that is advertised soooo much and Soo hard I actively go against it. Is it a good system, no. But do I feel better about it, yes

Of this 25 minute video, a full 10 minutes of it (I actually counted) are dedicated to discussing sponsors either directly or indirectly - particularly ketones. I've been a fan for a while and I understand the necessity to earn a living - however speaking incredibly positively of something that you know (and you do know) has thin evidence at best with a significant economic cost to an individual is definitely not in the spirit of why I and many others follow you. You should recognize the influence you have over people, particularly younger people, and NEED to do better in the future.

100% noted. I personally love ketones and you can do the math that I don’t need money from sponsorship that I don’t believe in. It helps me massively on a cognitive and focus level. Up to 80% of the fuel for your brain is ketones and I find a massive difference in brain fog during and after workouts. I 100% understand your point on making it too much of a focal point, but character attacks aren’t welcome. I’ll make sure to strike the balance better in the future. As always, thank you for your support

I would need to see the studies on these ketone supplements. From all the ones I've seen in the past, ketone supplements aren't effective unless you're in a state where you've exhausted your body's carb supply or fasting.

how many ketone bottles do you take before each workout?

Those bottles are like $4.50-$5 each for a questionable impact. Don't get ripped off kids. My guy here just casually drinking almost $20 of this stuff for a single session.

Rogue or Eleiko needs to sponsor Mitch with some competition collars.
