I Snuck Into The WORST Neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia

Holy crap! This part of Atlanta is the worst area I've seen in a long time!
For this video, I went into the worst possible Atlanta neighborhood I could find. Now this wasn’t a normal video where I just loc up into some hood and drive around and try and go unnoticed. No way boy. This is Atlanta. This is where the big boys play. So I got up as early as possible, left downtown and drove the less than two miles into an area on Atlanta’s northside that’s well known for gang banging, shootings, stabbings and everything else you can think of. It was Friday, January 8, 2021 and it was as early in the morning as I could go and still see.
The area I went to is here, located just inside the beltline, only a short drive from downtown. Now, Atlanta has been gentrifying fast, and this is one of a few pockets that still remain this bad so close to downtown. Odds are one day, these homes won’t even be here at all. So I was lucky to see it. The areas I’m about to drive through are called Vine City and Washington Park.
Of course, crime in Atlanta is atrocious in pockets like this. Overall, though, outside of certain areas, Atlanta isn’t really all THAT bad overall for crime. When they knocked all the housing projects down and cleaned the place up in 90s to make room for the Olympics, things got a lot better. While in the 80s, much of this city was out of control, today Atlanta only ranks 50th in the country for per capita crime. Good for you Atlanta.
But not good for you the people who dwell in this part of town I’m driving through right now. Here’s the most dangerous section of Atlanta, at dawn, before they all got up.

Further down the bluffs is still rough rough trust me he didn’t go over them train tracks. You better not break down right there. Thomasville is still dangerous. and Whitehall in Decatur police scared to go in that area. Mlk is alot of robbing and killing. Don’t be fooled you need to watch your surroundings.

I realize that part of the purpose of this channel is to educate, so I hope this comment will serve as a learning opportunity for Nick Johnson. I find this video grossly misrepresents this community and could be based solely on outdated statistics or inaccurate first impressions. My wife and I used to live in one of the neighborhoods depicted in this video and deeply respected our neighbors. As a matter of fact, our neighbors were the best we had in my whole life. They watched out for us and engaged us in conversation every day. I would say that benefit is rarer in "better" neighborhoods with higher incomes. Also, the title of your video is misleading. Sneaking into a neighborhood makes it sound like you are entering a guarded building or a warzone. This neighborhood is neither of those. My wife walked to a school in the neighborhood every morning for work, and I commuted every morning as well. As with all other neighborhoods, most crime is going to happen at night not early in the morning. Giving the impression that you had to covertly enter the neighborhood makes it sound like you are having to dodge danger at every turn. Maybe you wouldn't look as suspicious if you weren't driving around the neighborhood for twenty minutes like you are on a safari trek. This community is not a nature walk or a zoo exhibit. Secondly, you got the names of the neighborhoods wrong where you chose to drive as other commenters have pointed out. As best as I can tell, you drove through English Avenue and Vine City. You actually drove down the street I used to live on in English Avenue. I also noticed that when you drove down the old street where I lived, you failed to film the new or renovated houses on the other side. Showing only the abandoned homes makes it seem like families don't live there and do not show the life that still exists in the neighborhood. While these areas of Atlanta are some of the hardest hit by poverty and crime, your video does not educate people to support their neighbors. You have perpetuated old stereotypes of poor communities that they are places to be avoided or that the people who inhabit them must have questionable character. These stereotypes make it easy for people to justify their suffering as crime continues or they are displaced through gentrification. When poorer neighborhoods become the sum of their abandoned houses or crime statistics, we fail to see the people who live there as our neighbors who deserve to be supported in rebuilding their community. I hope this pushes you to pursue more nuance in your videos and even ask yourself or your viewers the question, "Why is there so much poverty and crime concentrated in this one area?" I can only offer my perspective of living there, but I hope it acknowledges the dignity of my old neighbors, several of whom are still friends of our family.

@@gardensofthegods My husband is a builder and has been for over 30 years. He's right, there are home owners in that area that are being offered lots and lots of money. A friend was offered a million for his family home, where he grew up. Given, his home is in very good shape....but, many people are selling now. Of course everyone isn't getting a million dollars, but what He's saying is true. That's what happens when the renovations start. They will move these people out and completely redo the area. Eventually, the average person who grew up there, won't be able to afford a home on the west end.

I've lived in Atlanta for five yrs. I moved to Bankhead having no idea it was " the hood ". I've never had a problem. I'm white ,in my fifties . I work in Bankhead . Live in Bankhead and spend my money in Bankhead. Go to church in Bankhead . There are good ppl here . There's good and bad everywhere. I would never call this the worst of Atlanta. This is my home and these are my neighbors and friends.

I was really hoping you would drive by the community garden we started in Vine City during the Occupy Wall Street days. The land was donated by a local family. I'm an older white dude, and all the people I met there were very cool and friendly. Never felt threatened by anyone. Since then, the local community has taken it over and turned it into a sustainable garden that produces a good deal of food for the people of the neighborhood. One elder couple who lived across the street from the garden told me they have lived there since the 70's, and planned to keep living there. I never felt like I had to "sneak" into this neighborhood, I just drove in and felt welcomed.

The neighborhood doesn't look half bad. The big problem is so much trash scattered here and there on the streets, if that got under control it would help quite alot. Many of the homes seem to be renovated or taken care of; compared to dilapidated homes in that area from many years ago. I helped tutor children at a daycare/community in the middle of the Bluff. I never once felt unsafe and was welcomed by the community. I was there to provide a safe place for children of single households to come after school and to help the community in any way I can.

As an Atlanta native, and a recovering heroin addict (4 years clean in April 2021) it is wild to see a video like this. Any of you that actually live in, or know about Atlanta knows this area well. Us junkies call it the bluff and while there are lots of young families and old families, generation after generation staying in the same house, a good portion of these homes are trap houses. After only the first 10 minutes I had seen about 10 of my old drug dealers homes. Waiting outside their house for hours. Driving through there ducking when we saw cops. They know the area they patrol....being white in this area...not a good idea if you’re up to anything nefarious. Sad to see this place is looking even worse than the last time I saw it.

It was such a nice city with really nice people when I moved there in the late 70's. Anything charming or that is old Atlanta is torn down. It looks, feels and is a testament to aggressive destructive gentrification and hate. Just makes you ill if you knew Altanta b/4 2000.

People don’t know this anymore, but the Simpson Road/Ashby Street area was once the professional Black people’s home ground. My own grandparents lived on Lena Street (before they tore their homes down in the 70s to construct MARTA). Dr. & Mrs. MLKing, Jr. lived on Sunset as a young couple. So did the parents of Julian Bond, both college professors. It’s sad to see what happens when all the resources are stripped from a neighborhood & never replaced. Especially, when it didn’t have to happen that way-but it did. Some of those homes are 100 years old & should’ve been included in some City Planning outlay, or some historical preservation register-but they never were. No funds of any kind (or grocers, pharmacies, clinics, or recreational centers) were ever made available to those residents-until @2003. And even then, only to a certain demographic. Plenty of church houses, though-didya notice? You can literally drive for miles & never find a single constructive resource center, not even a bank or a dry cleaners, in some of these old areas. Just houses falling apart & places where people throw trash. They can’t even get loans today in 2021 to own any of the businesses. You gotta be from Korea, Kenya, Pakistan, VietNam (places with government treaties) to even qualify.

At one time, I lived in Jonesboro, Ga. I heard on the news one morning (back in the 70's) that a woman took a rocking chair off the porch of an abandoned house and got like 5 years for stealing! The house had been vacant for a few years, and, she didn't see any reason she couldn't get the chair and put it to use. I thought it was absolutely rediculous!

Based on the US legal system with this matter going to trail, the victim did move forward pressing charges with the state which offers some legitimacy to the case. Another reason why just because you don't see someone watching over property, doesn't mean that you have free range to go over and aquire it. Besides, many buildings aren't just "abandoned" by owners. The city or township owns the property if so.

I am a white guy in Decatur, I have driven these parts of Atlanta for years, where most white folks would never go. Sometimes sketchy, a bit scary, but not usually that bad. In the daytime! A lot of people just simply live here and have a community. A lot of good people, especially the older ones. So, comparing to Milwaukee and Chicago, it's better. Billionaire Arthur Blank who built that Mercedes stadium has put truckloads of cash to develop the community and the real estate. I think it's has a positive effect, but still a long way to go. Next is coming the Beltline and gentrification, to rebuild these areas without kicking out the poor. It won't be perfect but it's possible.

the 90s Atlanta was the real heart of Atlanta. the underground mall was just built.the braves was the baseball team to beat the olympics was awarded, freaknik was off the chain, hangouts like club XS, the warehouse, club garage, the royal peacock, was the place to be(hip hop and R&B) wise. those elderly ladies by five points station screaming YALL NEED JESUS REPENT LOL. had me dying. Atl has many blue collar neighborhoods. I find most of the crime happens where people have something. People aren't going to rob someone with nothing. I worked at Fort McPherson in East Point twice, 15 months each time between assignments to Korea. I lived in the suburbs of Morrow and Lithia Springs. I was apart of the last generation to grow up in the community. You actually drove (Paines Avenue) past the land where the house built by my Great-Grandfather once stood...tall and proud. This community was once filled with blue collar (and some more astute) professionals that took pride in their homes. Many, like mine were passed down from generation to generation. In the early 2000's, my family decided to sell the property due to disrepair and the major decline of the neighborhood. We all went to church together, school together and loved the community. I always knew it would be revived into a safe and comfortable neighborhood for future Atlantians. Hopefully the neighborhood will improve soon!

I was passing through on a Greyhound bus when we stopped at the ESL station transferring buses. Two things were unsettling to me 1. When a fellow passenger asked a employee to " Sir, please stop throwing my bags against the ground" the employee responded with: "Sir? Please? We don't use those type of words around here" as he kept throwing bags on the ground. 2. A passenger got off the bus and walked into what looked like an abandoned business park. IDK why this creeped me out, but it felt like the Field of Dreams movie but instead of the players disappearing into the corn field, the guy dissapeared into urban blight. I've been to grimmie parts of Milwaukee and Chicago but ESL took the cake.

About as charming as Campbellton Rd near Oakland City. The Campbellton Shopping Plaza was once a thriving Mall. Campbellton Rd , Myrtle Drive and Alison Court had lovely apartments. I work once a week at a clinic in the area.. I used to run stop signs and traffic lights! 😂 I see everything... Prostitution, drug deals, people fighting and cussing... But, over time I came to realize that the people in the neighborhood needed assistance with getting off drugs, alcohol and somewhere to live to recover... And that's what we do in my organization. I am a psychiatric and behavioral health nurse and provide care to the same people that I was once afraid of... When you hear their stories, it will bring you to tears... The pain and trauma...😭 🙏

Elderly parents die and leave it to their adult children who pass it on to grandkids. In cases where they have a substance abuse problem, they have no money for trash service, repairs and upkeep. I see how this neighborhood might have looked thru the 1980s before crack, with cute homes. Now 30+ years later, I see the after effects of brutal addiction, hopelessness, unemployment. Lived in Atlanta since 1960. I know this area very well. It is on the NW side. It is a redlined district. From sixties up to today blacks live there. I had relatives that lived there. MLK and his family lived on Sunset off of Simpson Rd which is one of the mainstream. Atlanta HBCUs are on the outskirts of the area. That neighborhood never had any advocates. I guess it was to black. It's right at the border of downtown Atlanta near the Mercedes Benz stadium so you know they are going to gengerfy it.
