There is something cool about wearing just one watch. The watch gets a whole other meaning. And the 36mm Explorer is just so perfect. I do it the same with my old Sea Dweller. I stopped buying mid-tier watches just out of boredom and moved on to other hobbies.

As others have said, this is such a wholesome video and so appreciated by someone who isn’t into watch collecting per se (due to the cost), but more just has an appreciation of the specific emotions involved with specific pieces. I bought my first “real” watch when I moved permanently from Sydney, Australia, to northern Spain - a Speedmaster Professional sapphire sandwich that I’d wanted for a number of years. It will always be my first love and represent that change in my life. Yesterday, to mark the 6 year anniversary of having given up basically everything to move to the other side of the world, I was lucky enough to be able to collect my Explorer 124270: my second love, and the watch I passed on the buy the Speedmaster (it was the 114270 at that time). To be able to have both watches is a dream, and I can’t wait to create the kinds of memories you’ve created with yours, with mine. Thanks again for a great video mate. I’ve just subscribed.

I wanted an explorer since I was 8 years old. Finally, my son gifted me one upon retirement. I concur,, they are remarkable watches. Sadly, in 5 years of wearing it, it needed repairs and service. Having been a pastor for 42 years I could never come up with the $1500 estimate. So I traded the Rolex for another watch in my league. It deserved to be fixed and worn. I miss it every day.

So many people get into watches and go absolutely hog-wild buying sub $500 pieces. They can justify it because despite spending thousands, they didn't feel the hit of a singular massive purchase. This was my journey too, but after a year or two you look at your collection and realize that its full of compromises and "itch-scratchers". A couple years ago I liquidated my entire collection and settled with a two piece set, my Tudor Black Bay and Nomos club. A little sport and a little dress. I think this whole rig-a-ma-role is just a natural part of entering the hobby and discovering what you love. The video was great - thanks for posting.

After owning the 114270 for over a year and having tried on the newest model, I honestly think I am fine with the 114270. It may have the jangly bracelet and lack of AR but it has a certain charm I enjoy. I wear it for days at at time because it's like that one pair of comfy jeans. I did the reverse. I knew I wanted a 36mm Explorer (before they downsized it again) and every time I saw a watch which caught my eye that I liked and could afford (but didn’t love as much as the Explorer) I set that money aside. And did it again whenever I gave that second choice watch another glance. And before long, I had NOT bought enough alternative watches sufficient to finally get the Explorer. And it hasn’t left my wrist for several years. For all the reasons you listed here, I just can’t fall in love with anything else enough to make me wear it enough to justify it. I’ll take a glance at something new and think, “will I wear this instead of the Explorer, ever?” Probably not.

The Explorer is a lovely watch, the only thing I would miss is having a date window. I bought myself a new 36mm Datejust 116234 back around 2001 and it was my daily wearer for many years until I got a Tudor North Flag. Both watches have all the marks of everyday use - scratches and dings which just adds to their character IMO. Been thinking of getting myself a Tudor Pelagos FXD lately to take over daily duties....yes I know it has no date window, but I think I love the look of it enough to live without knowing the date!

Subscribed to your channel my friend. Cheers. I received a TT vintage Daytona when I graduated from medical school, and was gifted it by my father. It has the old Zenith movement, and it has such a vintage flare. Hold it close to me given circumstances. The first “luxury” watch I bought was the Speedmaster Reduced (2002), first savings from first job. Goldilocks size for 6.75 inch wrist. I visited the AD countless times before I could buy it. Wore it for 8 years straight, and then the much lusted after Rolex Explorer (2009). A few years later the Explorer II (2011). A few pieces in between (mostly sold now) Tag Heuer Carrera 39mm, Longines Master Collection Moonphase 40, Sinn 356, Christopher Ward C60, and a few microbrands. The BB58 (2019), spot on proportions. And the new Speedmaster Pro 3861 (2021) that finally wears great on smaller wrists. There is also the Rolex Submariner 16610 from 2010 (the pride of the collection, along with the Explorer II and the Speedmaster Pro, all 10/10 wrist presence satisfaction) bought in 2020, but that is another story.

I would love to have a 39mm Explorer but I just can't bring myself to pay the exorbitant prices that they are asking for them now. I refuse to pay 10,000+ for a 6,000 watch. If things ever settle out maybe I will pick one up. Also nice to see the scratches and scars on your watch. Mine look that way as well. They were made to be worn. For me there is nothing more annoying than people that buy a watch and don't wear it.

There is no other watch that generates so many personal testimonies with these certain qualities of joy and satisfaction. It is THE watch. But shhhh...

I’m about to do the same. Selling a dozen. Getting the Tudour bb 36 mm in black. Okay I’ll keep a few g shocks and a quartz.

Thanks for the video! I'm actually in a similar situation (just got my dream watch and need to part with the watches that have accumulated up to this point. If you don't mind me asking, how did you go about selling your other watches?
@HarrisonElmore2 жыл бұрын
You’re fine! At the time I sold them all through either EBay or through my AD. My AD in the area gave me a far too good deal on my Speedmaster reduced, which I didn’t expect.

What a great timepiece 😍 Enjoyed the video! Quick question: what's that pulsating bulb/lamp on your desk?
@HarrisonElmore2 жыл бұрын
It's a floating bulb. It's similar to the Flyte bulb, but this is by exekoml on Amazon

My first Rolex was a 114270Z, bought in 2008. I own a bunch of watches, including six Rolex watches, and they are all important to me, but there is only one watch that makes my heart leap when I pull it out of the drawer and that's the Explorer.

It's definitely something special. Enjoy!

Rolex explorer 1 in 36mm is just the best! Got mine 2 weeks ago from my ad where i also bought a bb58 navy blue some time ago. I was on the waitlist for slightly over 6 months. They said it could take 1 to 2 years till i get one. I am glad rolex increased the production and i got it sooner now. I ve been wearing it straight for two weeks and cant think of putting it off to wear another piece from my collection 😄 curious how long this honeymoon phase will last 😊

It'll end at some point, and then you'll wear it once and you'll have it again. At least that's what happens with me. Those first few feelings always come back to it.

I have a tissot v8… Bulova Lunar… seastar silicium… And I’m currently saving up for a big crown pointer date. I know my watches will never appreciate like a Rolex, but it gives me small stepping stones that i can use incrementally to build up a wearable watch fund that i can use later to purchase my big hitter. They’ll get traded for a jlc reverso one day, but until then, i love the variety of my little watch piggy bank.

Wow! What an amazing video. That's exactly what I intend to do in the near future. The one watch collection. Thank you :)

That’s what appreciation is all about. You found it, it has a story, you see it staying with you. The 36mm Exp1 is all most will ever need. Only question: what’s on your wrist while you’re handling the Exp1?
@HarrisonElmore2 жыл бұрын
I had a Pelagos I've got here for review on my wrist at the time

To support your sentiments, although I have an extensive collection from Minute repeater, turboullion, chronograghs.... PP, JLC, Cartier, Breguet, in the end I rarely wear any of them and wear only two.... My rolex explorer(36), and Blancpain swatch (Indian Ocean). In the end a watch only has to tell me the time.... Keep it simple. Aside from the explorer, one precious watch is my stainless steel PP Calatrava manufactured 1921, sold in the market 1935. Again just tells time.
