Mate, I'm still using a D700 with an old 50mm D lend as my main rig and it takes photos in 2024 that are just as stunning as the photos it took in 2009. Up until a couple of months ago I was also using a Pentax K-r, a consumer grade rig that punched well above it's weight. I gifted the K-r to a friend who is just starting out in photography and he loves it as much as I did. I'm also still using an Olympus E300 with an old 8 meg kodak ccd sensor and the photos I get from it are beautiful. The megapixel wars are marketing brainworms for people who think expensive gear equals good shots. I love your content Matt, fight the power my friend.

My first digital camera. Such a great beast. The CCD sensor is awesome and the 10MP are still very very capable of larger prints. Upgraded to a D7100 in 2015 and it almost felt like a downgrade. Not picture-wise, but the plastic drove me kind of crazy. I’m a bit of a nice-build-quality-crack and so I sold my beloved D7100 for a D810. That was a giant upgrade, in every single way. But the most important thing on a camera is it’s glass mounted to it. I especially like the old AI-S lenses like then 105 2.5, as they fell almost sharper than my 70-200 2.8 or any N lens that is. And if you know how to manually focus, they’re dirt cheap for what they deliver.

2024: I sold my D800 in 2018. I felt nostalgia for the D800's files, so this year I got a D810 because the price difference between the 2 models is not so far apart anymore..... but... the output of the D810's files is not the same. Later I find out that there is image differences from the D800 and the D810, same 36 megapixels resolution but not the same sensor. Today, I saw on Ebay a mint D800 with just 13K on the shutter for $400... I couldn't let it pass!

My Pentax K10d ( 10mp) is still working after 14 years of use, I don't think modern cameras are made to last that long. Most of my favorite camera are the CCD cameras ones that are ancient for most people. If something would break it is less to replace. The best part is the vintage lens on those Dslrs. @@MattsNotes Oh I'd love to have a D7000 series camera down the line. Keep in mind that D3000 series can't autofocus with AF-D lenses and depending on age, compatibility can be more than spotty with AF-P as well. Hey! Just came across your channel, nice protest! hahahah anyway, I've started dslr photography quite recently, and I started with a mere Nikon D3300, and man, little playful camera, nice colors... I "mastered" the basics with this camera, and I was looking to upgrade to full frame and thinking to myself how much it would cost me. So... I took the shortest way and just ordered a second hand D800 for a bargain and really can't wait to have that bulky feel in my hands. I think your video confirmed me a few things, plus the fact that I agree that we are experiencing too much sharpness in photography that quite takes away that feeling photography would give us before, not that actual photography isn't enjoyable, but a bit of old gear in the right hands and videos like yours make the delights of thousands. Thanks 😉and btw, if you could give me a heads up on which lenses should I look for for a start. I've been shooting mostly with primes like 50mm and 35mm and have enjoyed. Would be much appreciated.
@MattsNotes
@MattsNotes Ай бұрын
@omeuteacherdani I appreciate your comment! Firstly, that D3300 is amazing, and I'd keep it around (unless you had to trade up to get that d800, very understandable lol). Secondly, the D800 is a prime camera now, and for years to come! Dynamic range hasn't made a whole lot of progress over the years, and if you're simply into photography (not so much on the video side of things), MOST older dslr cameras would give you 95 percent of what you'd likely need. Last, do you have any lenses now? If so, what is their exact make and model? I'm asking just to see if I can save you some money on buying new glass (that's if these lenses you own are full frame already) Thanks again! -Matt

@@MattsNotes thanks for the reply. Yeah, I kept it around. My partner will use it while I move on with the D800. So far I own the 35mm DX, 50mm AF Nikkor, the AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6 ED VR First gen and the 18-55mm kit DX. So, yeah, no full frame lenses. I think. In any case I've been trying to figure what would be the best bang for the buck to start shooting right away without having to use it as a crop sensor with my actual lenses. And yess, I'm mostly into photography. Thanks again, Dani

I love my D800E ❤! I have mirrorless cameras and for some reason I prefer using my DSLR. It challenges me to do more like making sure my exposure is on point and I'm forced to look through the view finder not the screen! Shooting mirrorless is like a double edge sword, it is convenient for run and gun Shooting, but it makes you lazy in a way 😂. With my DSLR I have to check and touch buttons and expose correctly, and it just makes you work a little harder and I appreciate the images a little more!

Thanks for the question, Jim! The D850 edges out the D800 in video as it has 4k and slow motion options. The D800 is workable in my opinion; it has full HD and a mic jack. In short, the d850 could be a better option for video. The d800 is significantly more affordable however, and if you're working within the D850 budget, I'd almost rather just grab a D800, and a budget friendly camera with good video specs (like a used nikon z30 and nikon f to z adapter) then you'd benefit from multiple camera angles while likely still coming under the price of one d850 lol. I hope that helps!

I love that D200! I hear you there regarding that GX85. Although I've grown to love micro four thirds cameras, there was something about their 16mp sensor that I never enjoyed. Maybe I'll revisit that camera in the near future. Thanks for your comment!

In the last 2 decades auto-focus, lens design, video & other things like IBIS have been constantly improving. But there is one thing that has been lacking that same speed of progress and that is the dynamic range of digital camera sensors. The dynamic range of the D800 is very competitive with the more modern mirrorless cameras that have come onto the market in the last 4 years, it's quite disappointing really when you think about it. If you don't need/do video you can pretty much save a ton of money and buy a much cheaper used DSLR & instead spend the difference on good glass.

great vid. I love how you are shooting for a more out of the box and unique presentation style. Too many Casey Neistat-esque low-fi music pumping in the background type vlog's out there. Not bashing it, it's not a bad thing if that's your thing but it's refreshing to see creators (like you)doing something different.

Been thinking about the D800e as well. I liked minty cameras so it's still a bit expensive, roughly 600-700 dollars in Europe. They appear to be a bit rare as well (in comparison to D800s). The D800E also has the best shutter sound of all Nikon DSLRs imo! Used to have a Z7 too and liked it image quality wise. But in terms of fun, I dislike the Zs, even the ZF I currently own. The shutter sound is a big turn off. Just feels so dead, like those of Sony cameras. Hoping for a change in the Z6iii but I expect they recycle the shutter mechanism again. Luckily, I have got a D50, D200, D610 and a D5 to turn to when I want to enjoy shooting. ;-)

Even though D800E 'has the best shutter sound', the shutter mechanism is not as good as that of D810.. you can get blur picture when use slower shutter speed due to mirror movement inside d800e's shutter mechanism.

@@legionniy Very good point, I did not know that. I think I'd go the D800E regardless. Shutter shock is a problem with any camera above 24MP. Mirrorless is much better in this area, at least when there is ibis.

@otes It's solid. Depending on the nature of the subject matter, both my Sigma sd Quattro and my older Sigma SD1 Merrill can give the 51MP Canon 5DsR a run for its money with their respective 20MP and 15MP. At the current price point though, there is hardly more resolution for the dollar on the market than the 5DsR. And EF lenses are plenty and cheap. I can only highly recommend that setup.

Seriously, you'd think that no professional could have ever taken a decent photograph before the days of autofocus and digital sensors. What nonsense, I'm not a professional but I can afford professional gear 3-5 years after it has been introduced and is being sold at bargain prices because everyone else is buying the latest piece of new technology. The same applies to lenses, I own some of the best glass Nikon ever made and I'll never go to the Z system for that reason alone. I'll happily snap away with my D810 and my D850, in a couple of years I might consider medium format when a Fujifilm GFX 100S II comes down in price.

This year I moved from the D750 to the Z7 II because I wanted higher resolution and the price was affordable. BTW, bodies are currently 1999.95 in the US. One thing I learned quickly is that the Z mount lenses are typically better than the F mount lenses. The Z mount Tamron 70-300 totally trounces the older F mount 70-300 AF-S Nikkor. I expect that the same will apply with your 28-75mm f2.8, the new Z mount version will be much sharper with better contrast than your antique. Concerning the resolution of your D800E, 36Mp is actually a resolution that exactly matches the capability of 20/20 eyesight. So your camera was a good choice. However down the road you may want to consider moving to the Z mount because Mirrorless is the future.
