Great Video! I gave my Original Xbox and a 100 games to a coworker for free.. I wasn’t using them and stored them in a box.. He wanted one, And It felt like the right thing to do. I feel no guilt about it.

I've gone through so many phases as a collector, which I've been doing for over 20 years. Starts with just bulking for a lot of people, then going for collections within collections and so on and on. I'm pretty much at a place where I almost don't even buy anymore, I'm simply enjoying playing this collection I've amassed over all these years. Enjoy your stuff people.

I completely understand. I recently sold my copy of Ogre Battle 64. I picked it up at a decent price, played it, and liked it, but never loved it. Once I got to the point that I knew I’d probably never pop it into my N64 again I decided to sell it. It was cool having it on the shelf, part of my collection, but I’m just not a “shelf collector”. So selling it and using the money to buy games that I actually play and will continue to play in the future has been much more satisfying than having Ogre Battle look pretty collecting dust on my shelf.

Great video! I feel this is a topic that should be discussed more often, Its important to realize as a collector what truly holds sentimental value to you over economic value, I mean yeah its cool to own expensive rare games but whats the point of having them if you are not even going to enjoy them, specially if you could use the money for something more important at that point in your life

Man Craig it feels like it has been a decade since I have seen a video by you. I know it might have been hard to sell a lot of your collection, but I am glad you are perfectly okay with what you currently own. I am at 1850 right now and it feels wrong for me to sell anything I own despite not being able to play everything I buy. It gives me a sense of comfort. Maybe one day I will distill some of my stuff, but I just don't feel the time is right. I hope you are well and all the best

I always find your videos discussing these kinds of things to be so enjoyable. I personally struggle a lot with collecting at times because of how much money is often attached to it these days. Sometimes it's difficult to understand my own place within a hobby and what it is that actually makes me happy. At times I buy things and end up feeling little to no excitement upon receiving them in the mail and then I start feeling conflict and stress about why I don't feel happy with my item. It's a weird thing sometimes, but your videos definitely help me process those feelings a bit, so thank you!

For the past year i've been going through a slow-burning purge. This is not due to money issues or even a burnout of gaming, but simply a evolution in my mindset (I guess is the best way to describe it). Upon recently buying my first home I, naturally, separated out items of category into keeps and tosses. I started with the typical furniture and when doing so i realised how easy it was to do it... how freeing it was to minimise... how aware i was of owning items i can literally name without saying "yeah, i think i have it/that/one of them". So, I took this self-revelation to my collectibles to see how this same mentally would apply. It applied. Brilliantly. I categorised my collection into systems, from there sentiment and from there games i enjoyed and have completed with no going back and then to games 'i own just because'. The just because games were actually easy to put into 'the pile' and let go of - i took pride in my large collection for so long just because it was large, however, this was only a realisation for me once I started moving house. Anyone can own a million things, but by doing so each individual memento receives less care and appreciation - Andy's toys, Toy Story. I shrunk my collection down to correlate with my current mindset and now when I walk into my 'Game Room' i'm instantly hit with a glance of the items that made me fall in love with the most profound art form. I now just own games that represent my character and likes, the sense of a large-scaled collection doesn't own me. My advice aligns with Craig, purge with your own decisions, do so for you an think about why you're doing it...but also take a minute to think about why you have amassed 'too much' in the first place. Everyones belongings should represent them, by owning everything you forget why you started.

I've been in the process of letting things go. What spurred it on was not having any money, but I think I feel good about it beyond that. I rent a mobile home and live paycheck to paycheck. I have all this stuff, many of it from when it first came out, and knew that there was some value in it. The money I make on them goes pretty quick, but it's been extremely helpful. But really I started thinning out games when I saw redundancies in the collection. I only need one way to play Mega Man X, for example. The other ways to play it are way more convenient that busting out the SNES. So I have this only for something to be a physical representation of my enjoyment that sits on a shelf. Why take up the space? And all that added up to a pretty significant cut of what I owned. So yeah, what you've said here feels pretty spot on in a lot of ways to my experiences. And now that feeling of redundancy is evolving as I embrace emulation, or even just digital games in general. I used to never opt for digital if there's a physical version, but I didn't like the answers when I asked myself why that was. Now, I still collect where I can, but it's much more focused. I buy the first-party Switch games I'm interested in physically, and I have a collection for the Game Boy family of systems that's mostly loose carts, and found a way to display them nicely. That's pretty much it! I keep it cheap, focused, and interesting based on my tastes. Thank you for this perspective! I to this day haven't seen another collecting channel approach this topic (in fact I bet a lot of them purposefully avoid it to make it seem like they have more, but idk). I find the discussion very valuable.
@ogre706
@ogre706 2 жыл бұрын
Your experience with Mega Man X is very relatable. When considering the prices for some of these games these days, at some point we all should ask ourselves the ever important question: "why?" I can understand someone wanting to own a piece of their childhood. I've done it myself, buying back a few of the games I had as a kid. Beyond that though, it kinda becomes trophy collecting. Most of us aren't rich and are probably spending a sizeable portion of a limited income to buy some of these things. And sadly it's all too easy for this hobby to get a bit out of hand somewhere along the way.
@tvandlust
@tvandlust 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the redundancy helps (especially with emulation). I sold Earthbound, but I can still play it on Wii U, 3DS, the SNES mini and even the GBA. No shortage of ways to play that game legitimately, but selling the original made me a mint lol I’m glad you enjoyed the discussion!

Thank you for this video, it reinforces my thoughts on my collection. I have had to sell some of my rarer games this year. What I noticed is that once some of them are gone, then so is my need to have that in my collection. I have only sold a couple of games I have regretted selling. I have figured out the hardest part of selling a game is the realization that that game doesn't define my collection. I really focus on the games I want to play. Any who thanks, I have now subscribed so now I'll probably what all your other videos, since I like beinge watching channels to get caught up

Honestly I felt the same when I sold off my entire GameCube collection. I honestly thought that I would miss it. Been over a year and still don't have that urge to collect it again. Don't even miss it really. Don't get me wrong I love the system and the games I had but I just don't have that attachment to it anymore. Still collect mostly Atari 2600 and 7800(I got into 7800 on a whim as I love good but overlooked consoles) but even with that I feel like I pretty much got what I want now outside of a few remaining 1990 7800 releases like Ikari warriors, Motor Psycho and Basketbrawl and a few 2600 games.

Always find your musings so interesting and get me self reflecting. I did sell my entire game collection in 2012/13 and tbh I'm hanging onto the hobby of gaming by my fingernails in recent years as I just don't play anymore. But I collect Anime and alot of what you say does get me thinking about 'trophies' and the like. I have sold and reshaped that collection multiple times over the years. For some of us the act of collecting is quite fluid, with many differing phases along the way and not always a clear endgame. I have to say the peace you seemed to have landed on with gaming and collecting is really something I admire. It can seem all too simple to some but you are seemingly in a great place. I've been watching you since the town house and the days of the expansive collection but you yourself are the draw for me. Keep talking and I'll keep watching :)

I did something similar. I sold off my entire Sega collection. I love the Saturn and Dreamcast but I love the games more than I love collecting those systems so I'm more than happy to emulate the games and just play them. We all have items we can't part with but selling items to rearrange and refocus our collecting goals is massively healthy in my eyes.

Really love this perspective :) I decided a while back to get rid of some games for similar reasons. I just wasn't playing any of them and just admiring them on the shelf rather than really enjoying them and with the rarer titles I almost felt afraid to touch them because of their value etc. Although I still have a nice sized collection I try to sell on games or gift them to others after I finish with them so I don't accumulate so many that I'm basically never gonna touch again. Great video mate, been watching for many years :) Love from the U.K!

I love this video! I've been slowly thinning my collection and really haven't regretted much. I still have most of my rare and expensive games that I love... It's been more of the cheaper stuff I've been getting rid of because I know that if I end up regretting it, I can probably get those back for fairly cheap. That being said, I just sold Golden Axe Warrior cib and may sell Crusader of Centy. Those games are great, but are they really worth keeping, sitting on a shelf, when they are worth so much? Honestly, I collect music more now and want room and money for that hobby, so I'm hoping to cut down my collection a bit more. This video was very inspiring and well thought out. New subscriber!

I remember back in the day you were easily the best channel making content related to the original DS and I started really heavily collecting for that system and taking recs from you and it was just a great time to be into handheld gaming in general and your input was a big reason for that. I'll always remember this channel for that. Pretty sure I played Nostalgia because of your rec and I love and cling to my memories of playing that game as an anxious kid who just started college and needed that escapism. I played a lot of great DS games because of TV and Lust.

Thanks for the video. I always enjoy listening to your thoughts on collecting and appreciate you sharing your personal experiences with it. Like many other collectors, I too sought to purchase all of the games I grew up playing, but I found that accumulating all these games did not make me as happy as I thought it would. As it turns out, I preferred having a much smaller collection of games that truly meant something to me. Collecting is such a broad and interesting topic that I never get tired listening to. This is a good topic and very interesting to hear your thoughts on it. Since I became a dad I've been cutting down more on my collection, and realising that I'm really very OK with it. I will hold on to my favourites but it actually feels nice to cut down and tidy the collection. Recently I'm buying games for modern consoles to play, and selling more of my retro stuff that is just collecting dust at the moment as I don't play as much retro as I used to.

I parted with my GameCube and all my games years ago which I regret to this day but I haven’t bothered purchasing replacement games and consoles because I know it won’t be the same - I would need my actual console and games back to fill that void. Always enjoy hearing "updates" about the collection/your perspective on collecting. I certainly have days where I want to sell it all and days where I like having it all. Selling stuff is such a pain at times but I have gone through the effort for some larger titles. I'm not going to bother tossing $5 SNES games on ebay, but if someone is willing to pay $100+ for a PS1 game or something like that, I will go through the effort. I feel like having a game library has so many facets of my life tied into it that it would take me a long time to parse it out but some day, to be able to grow as a person, I will have to do it. I remember those rough times when you had to sell your Skull Kid and I'm glad to see that those times didn't last too long.

As someone who hasn’t sold much, I really appreciate this perspective. The truth is, there are a few items that are indeed trophies without emotional ties, and I’ve thought about letting some loose. I remember when you sold that statue-I’m so happy that you’re still here making the occasional video so that an old head like me can escape from his day to day. This video brings up the time before I moved abroad to Japan and sold off my boxed N64 collection to offset my moving costs and buy an old beater car to get me around town. I didn’t have a collection like Finngamer, but it was 35-40ish complete, respectable titles that were basically all the heavy hitters. They sat on a shelf, unused, and the prices then were skyrocketing. So I sold them. 8 years later and…yeah, monetarily it stings looking at what they go for now, but had I known what I know now, I wouldn’t be buying N64 games, and I would have been placing some serious FX transactions instead. What gets me to this day is that a large amount were my childhood copies. To make sure I was selling the best, “near-mint” versions as I could, I actually erased my name from the back of the cartridge I had written in sharpie all those years ago. In the end, it looked like anyone could have owned it instead of me. I’ve since purchased most of those games back here in Japan for a fraction of the cost, but the boxes are different, the original translation doesn’t hit as well in some games (Paper Mario, for example), and overall it feels like I tried to fill some void because I had to sell my originals out of necessity-yet here they sit in a cupboard, out of site for a few years now, hardly any of them played. I digress, but this video has made me think about my game collecting hobby in a way I’ve probably been avoiding. Great video, Craig, as always! I’ll be looking forward to the next one.

I began "culling" my collection last year, not all at once, every few weeks I'd take a look and see what I could get rid of and not regret it later on. I had a baby on the way, and I was looking at houses to buy at the time, more important things than some games on a shelf. Fast forward to today and my little girl is 7 months old, and I own a home that is much nicer than what was originally in my budget. No regrets and still have a collection I'm proud of!

I honestly really don't understand this collecting mentality, or even the idea of just doing it for owning games "from one's childhood". Maybe it's because I don't collect video games (just play a lot of them), but why buy something just for clout or keep it as a trophy? Are the memories we make as an adult less valuable? If I had played Mother II and Panzer Dragoon Saga and earnestly enjoyed them, that would be enough of a reason for me to keep them around, but it's also not a big deal to get rid of things. What all this comes down to is owning things as a hobby, and honestly it's not that complicated at the end of the day.
@tvandlust
@tvandlust 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t know, seems kind of unreasonable to say you don’t understand something in one breath and then be dismissive of it in the next. Perhaps, to you, hobbies are simply dispassionate ways to spend time, but I think a lot of people tend to have some kind of emotional investment in their hobbies, myself included… even if that hobby is simply owning things.

You said it yourself but your older videos (i think it was the fat trimming one) about this similar topic always had a thought provoking impact on me, its made me very considerate about what I do and don't buy as well as what I do and don't sell. It's made me infinitely more happier than I think I would have been if I had continued down the path I remember much younger me would have wanted to go on in terms of just buying games en masse, I've always done my best to make sure I'm a games player/enjoyer/enthusiast first and a collector second, especially because I know there's so many people in the scene that are the opposite

I sorta slowly stopped collecting after middle school and I moved states (Ohio to Arizona). I would drag my dad and grandparents out to flee markets to game hunt and sometimes get these cool stories like having a lot of PS2 games a dude just gave to me free or my parents vacationing and finding a CIB OOT or Superman 64 at a small Ma & PA place. My last big purchase was a Dreamcast and after having it for a few years (just wrapped a bachelor's degree a year ago) and playing it maybe 4 times at most + the retro scene becoming increasingly centered on anonymous online purchases/auctions which frankly aren't the same. Ironically I think I have the opposite problem as most folks. I want to sell the parts of my collection I have no attachment to but my parents (I have a disability and thus live with my folks still) insist on keeping it under some vague idea I'll miss it when It's not the stuff I play or have a sentimentality for I intend to sell.

I feel ya bud. Used to have 5,000+ pieces and now I'm down to around 340 ish. Narrowed down the collection to my favorites that I actually play yearly. I'm finding having a smaller collection means way more to me than having a huge collection. It also just feels......less stressful? Being less overwhelmed by walls full of stuff you know you won't touch for a decade if at all. It's actually why I collect game soundtracks. I don't have the time to play all of these games, but just hearing the music give me the same nostalgia hit as if I owned them.

I’ve been through phases of selling off my collection and then repurchasing a few of the things I had gotten rid of, which as prices increase I realize hasn’t always been too smart. Now I have largely transitioned to modded systems running backups in order that I may part with or replay anything I wish without fear of cost biting me in the back. Gatekeeping has become intense, but at this point I just want to play, own my definite favorites, and call it good.

There's definitely a lot of truth in what you're saying. There needs to be more game collecting videos that don't have consumerist / pro-capitalist undertones (which is what a lot of the modern game collecting scene supports whether they realise it or not, hence the high prices in the 2nd hand market like you said). I have a lot of thoughts on how my game collecting was affected by homelessness that I want to make a video on at some point (too much to talk about in a comment). But i do feel similar to what you say here in places. Great video with a lot of food for thought Craig.

Great video and rad to have a different perspective on downsizing and getting rid of big hitter items. I haven't sold anything I own that's a single big expensive item, however I came to a point just over 5 years ago when I moved interstate and while I was preparing to pack and move, I came to a decision where I sold my Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles as well as every game I owned for them, probably around 100 games or so. Not huge, but, it felt pretty freeing to remove 3 machines (and the Xbox brand) out of my collection and to focus primarily on Nintento and PlayStation machines, as that's where my interests lay and I was previously buying and playing Xbox games just to use the consoles, most were multiplats. To this day, no regrets and there's more than enough to play on the two modern companies that I do play and collect.

You are a really deep thinker. I am a big collector at least over the past 3 years. Mainly 3ds and ds stuff, but realistically anything Nintendo or psp/vita. I have probably 80 3ds/ds systems as I'm collecting all the special variations. In my mind I love the eds so I wanted to do it but it realistically is a value play too. I see it as an investment and while it would pain me to sell any I would still do it if I end up 2x or more my original ak investment. I'm in a studio and the goal is to get a house where I can out them all on display. But like you said it would just be trophies and likely later on will just be something extra I want to sell. My peace of mind is knowing that the value will only increase so I would be making some decent money

I may have never have had a huge collection, but the size has fluctuated a lot over the years. While items leaving my collection was rarely a choice, years later I can’t say I really regret most of the games I’ve let go. I am at this odd spot where I’m not sure whether or not I care About owning the physical items or not, but for now I think I’m content.

I’m still at a point where I still like owning SOME parts of my collection, but the parts I care to hang on to have gotten smaller and smaller over the years. Ownership has become less important to me as time goes on, so I understand

I used to collect manga. 1500 volumes... Eventually had to sell more than half and these days I still buy manga but very rarely. It was hard to get to where I am today, I feel. So many friendships and so much of what you think about yourself are rooted on the hobby...

Expensive trophies I'm not going to revisit is... yeah, that's stuff I've parted with as well. Cutting down on a collection can be difficult, especially when you're indecisive about revisiting a game and it would be hard to find for a good deal again. I've taken a long time to decide with some of my games, but so far no regrets.

Yeah, if I think there’s a decent chance I’ll play a game again, I’ll sit on it for a year or so. If I don’t play it, then it wasn’t meant to be, and I get rid of it.

I’ve never been into collecting. It’s the part of video games I care the least about. I like to play video games, the end. Do I own some choice games? Sure but I’d be fine with having every game I play on a SD card.

@@mr.noname5961 If you want to “own” games legitimately, you’re right. But I’ve turned to the dark side so in actuality, digital is a far more safe and secure way to keep my collection. Example: Some years ago, I was living out of the country. So I had my stuff in a storage unit. Flash forward, there was a hole in the roof and a lot of my stuff got water damaged. There’s not planning for that. But my digital collection, even if my hard drive exploded, is backed up multiple times, including to the cloud.

That’s great you were able to buy a house with your collection! Most of my remaining heavy hitters are still quite valuable (and will probably stay that way for the foreseeable future), but I’m sure a lot of my lesser-valued games have lost some of their value.

I've often consider selling my copy of Snow Bros for the NES, as I loathe the game anyway. However the NES is my favorite system to collect for, I paid 50 bucks for it years ago, and know I'll never buy it again for what it goes for now. But if one day I need the extra cash, it's definitely on the chopping block. The only things I did sell because I needed money were a few of my old Game & Watches that, even damaged, sold for some good money.

I will probably have that rule at some point. I do still buy games I don’t play very much for the DS and 3DS I have to admit, but I can’t imagine that will last forever. For any other platform, I only buy things I actually play with some kind of commitment.

@@tvandlust I’m in a similar boat with the DS, but I’m still not buying any sealed games, or games that I have 0 interest in playing. There are just so many unique games that will probably never get rereleased, or games that aren’t great to emulate due to the DS line’s unique hardware. Thanks for the reply!

I've never owned über über rare things but I still regret getting rid of games as a kid. For instance trading in Nights with the 3D Pad and getting around £5 for it... Ugh! I don't own a massive collection but I know if I sell anything I won't ever be able to afford to buy it again and any money I make will just dissolve so it's best to just hold on. For instance, Doshin The Giant, I got it super cheap back in the day and could sell it and make a lot more than I paid for it but then I'll never buy it again and may never play it again.
@tvandlust

These days actually playing roms whether on a flash cart or emulation can often be better, for example, FF6 has a really nice bugfix patch with a better translation. I prefer crt with real hardware so I do it with a flash cart. U get that original experience, but fixed and or enhanced. I wuld never want to actually play vanilla FF5, I alreayd have played it. When I want to revisit it, I will for sure use the modern rom fix hack. It will be familiar, but fresh and new and beter.IAnd for nes pasword games, do need for passwords with save states. FOr this reason, I never got into collecting real carts. They are just money trophies to me and take up space. But I spent a fortune on flash carts and optical drive emulators! All gakmes for all retro systems fuly loaded on every console I have ever wanted. And only costs a few thousand total for it all.

A bit strange to hear you talk about identity of being a collector, and were you stil a colector, almost as if being a collector was somehow virtuious or otherwise an important label to hold onto. I think of life all more like, i do what I do is all i do. I am not AM anything, not much anyway. But I am a gamer that is for sure I guess.
@tvandlust
@tvandlust 2 жыл бұрын
Well, virtuous is not the right word, and I wouldn’t use it. Most hobbies aren’t virtuous, but they are things that many people hold onto as part of their identity. A runner thinks of themselves as a runner. A painter thinks of themselves as a painter. A woodworker thinks- you get the idea. These things become an important part of how a person sees themselves. Collecting, while a bit more crass and less productive than other hobbies, is not much different. And it can become distressing to one’s sense of self when these identities are questioned or upended.
