That's why to this day i still absolutely LOVE watching HappyConsoleGamer. He's older now, got a kid, married, etc. And seeing his love, passion, and nostalgia for all the topics he talks about is really cool. Halfway through and wanted to comment. The problem I have with Join, Patreon, etc. is it effectively turns a KZbinr into a charity, when what they are providing isn’t a charitable endeavour. Moreover, it’s often used in ways I find wrong, such as KZbinrs only answering questions in live streams if they receive money from viewers to do so. There are a myriad of other indulgences I could add; PO Box ‘donations’, viewer manipulation including ‘basement leaks’, ‘museums’, ‘leaky roofs’, ‘pay my gas so I can go to X convention’, etc. Not that you’d ever do this but a lot of people have been affected by direct payments and gifting on the platform. KZbin has radically changed in the decade or so since it became really popular. I’ll certainly watch your content for as long as you upload, and will support how I can, but I think it’s important to acknowledge that these fundraising endeavours are not apolitical. Nevertheless, few will lose sleep over your coffee tip jar.
@tvandlust2 жыл бұрын
I don’t agree with the premise that it turns KZbin into a charity. Other than the frequent mischaracterization of contributions as “donations” (something I make point not to do), these things tend to be a pretty straightforward and largely understood exchange that is, at best, an emergent income/business model and at worst, not much different from busking. I think you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who confuses these transactions as charity. As for the other “indulgences,” I have a negative gut reaction to those things as well. I would agree it is a little manipulative and I think leveraging one’s audience for personal emergencies is not great (and a gross miscalculation in the average earning potential of this “career path”). So I understand your perspective. I agree with it. But we also both agree it’s a not a thing I’d do. So given that, it feels a lot like projecting grievances of others onto me, which I don’t find reasonable and I would ask that you don’t do. In 14 years, the most I’ve done is add a tip jar I don’t even rattle. That’s not nearly the same as soliciting “donations” for home repair, and I don’t think it’s fair to examine them with the same lens.

As a long time fan (12+ years) and a recent podcaster, I always admired your authenticity and integrity. I'm on the same page with you on pretty much everything relative to not wanting to view my love for Twin Peaks in particular as a profession, not monetizing it in any way, and keeping that creative spark. You've always been genuine and well spoken, so I cannot wait to see the trajectory you take your channel in.
@tvandlust2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Although, to be clear, I don’t mind people, including myself, monetizing their contributions. If you make a thing, I think it’s ok to make a buck if you can. I just don’t like the level of exploitation that I so often see these days. Makes every creation feel just a vehicle for ads.

You were one of the first channels that I subscribed to back in the day. I always liked the perspective you brought to game reviews and discussion, you always said what you thought in a platform where everyone else seem to have the same opinion about the same games. Thanks for all these years of videos and podcasts. Your podcast and allgengamers’ were very influential to me. Not only they were the ones that made me understand the concept but also the first ones that I actually followed and listened every week. I’d love of a return of the podcast too, if you find the time, in which format you’d think makes more sense.
