I have to defend Agatha here. It made sense to me. The only people with a motive were Mark and Adelaide. Money is everything in Agatha Christie. Josie had no motive on the face of it, and ‘maybe she was jealous’ would not cut it in court. So, the plot simply gave Mark an alibi for the time Ruby was killed. He had no need for an alibi when Pamela was killed because he had no known connection to her. They then manufactured a motive for Basil Blake. The secret marriage was alluded to when Miss Marple worked out that Basil and Dinah were secretly married by their behavior to each other. This made her realise that a secret marriage could also be in play and give somebody else a motive too. Once Miss Marple showed Josie was married to Mark, that’s when the alibis were useless because Jose could have killed Ruby and had a clear monetary motive. The dress, teeth and nails were clear crime scenes clues that the bodies were switched. That being said, Miss Marple is often based on human nature rather than clues. Miss Marple ‘knew’ that Mark was the murderer because he was about to lose money and was obviously a rotter. But, he had an alibi. So it was her job to break it. A Murder is Announced is by far the best Miss Marple. Everything is laid out, clue after clue but you have to listen to what every character says, no matter how trivial it seems.

I spent two nights in a library but that was due to a combination of factors- far too much mulled wine, an attempt to find a public lavatory, and the unfortunate timing of Christmas bank holiday closures. By the time they found me I'd worked my way through the whole of _Tintin_ and a table of produce intended for a food bank

Have you thought about staying at the hotel in Harrogate Agatha Christie disappeared to? Not sure what you'd read there but it would be fun to hear you tell the story!

Generally speaking, the Poirot books are better clued than the Marple ones, with her acting more out of intuition. A really well clued Marple book is a "Murder Is Announced". Spoilers are following: However, the wedding stuff makes sense, if you look at it from Miss Marple's perspective. She knew that Josie was guilty, because Josie identified the wrong body. But Josie didn't have a motive. Quite in contrast, it seems it would be in her interest if Ruby lives long enough to inherit from Jefferson, and then she could have benefited from Ruby's wealth as well. So Miss Marple was wondering, which motive Josie could have had, and marriage crossed her mind. The clue, the readers got, was "Somerset house", which I think was probably a better clue back in Christie's day, when it was better known.

1:03:47 Because Dinah said she'd do anything for Basil. Gave Miss Marple the idea that it may be a couple who would do anything to guarantee a future together, or that if one half of a couple was so in love with the other than they'd do anything they asked, including go along with a. murder scheme to inherit a lot of money.

1:05:00 If you have the patience to go through all the local marriage records to see if you can find either name then it's not that hard to find out. Whether they kept it a secret or not there'd still be a record of it somewhere, plus witnesses otherwise it wouldn't be legal. They just weren't planning on announcing it until Jefferson Cope died. I guess when miss Marple noticed the holes in their stories and noticed little things about what they said and how they acted she began to wonder if there was a reason why they made those mistakes and were both the ones who had a reason to leave the dance floor that night and be alone for a while, so she started asking around and got lucky.

I don't know if you still read these comments but i recommend Sleeping Murder. It's actually my favorite Marple novel and one of my favorite Christie novels overall. It's so creepy and eerie, I found it really unsettling. It even has paranormal vibes. I really hope you get to it sometime. I also like Murder at the Vicarage which was the first Marple so it introduces the village where ahe lived St Mary Meed. So basically the first and last Marple are the best imo!

Love you too Gavin! Loved the outfit, quite envious. 'Miss Marple' is a lazy cow absolutely made me howl. So pleased you liked Gladstone's and Hawarden, they are such fab places. The Yorkshire Tea shade though Gavin!!!! Ha. The shadow of you in the cap looked quite devilish, don't know if anyone else spotted that ;) I have another video suggestion... when can I be a Watson to your Holmes? Or a Derek to your Yvette. Hahaha.

I kind of love the fact that you do a lot of Agatha Christie stuff because my grandpa loved those books. In the one year before he died he read all the time and mystery books were some of his favorites and Agatha Christie books made up a large section of his collection and when he died I inherited some of his books which included Agatha Christie books so now it feels like I can bond with him even though he is gone now. (Sorry for how long this comment is)

On Mr Jefferson not being attractive since the plane crash, I assumed that meant his face had maybe been burnt or scarred as well as him losing his legs. Also, Mr Jefferson described the dress the body in the library was found in, not the one he last saw Ruby in, because Josie told him that she found the earlier dress left in Ruby's room and that the dress on the body was gone from Ruby's wardrobe

I read this one two months ago. [SPOILERS] I figured the school girl was gonna turn out to be something as soon as they mentioned her as missing, and when they found her body burnt I guessed that it meant they were swapped to screw with everybody’s alibis. I got that the son in law was the killer. Josie was soooo suspicious but I couldn’t see how she gained anything from her cousin’s death since she was likely to manipulate her into sharing the wealth once she inherited. All in all, Josie being wed to the son in law explained that away. But yeah, it’s a leap to think spontaneously that they are secretly married.
