I used to weigh 190 lbs at 5'4" tall (US size 12/14) 6 months ago and I'm down to a US size 5/6 now and still losing. I only made a few changes to my diet and routine and the weight just started coming off. First, I stopped drinking soda & sugary drinks every time I was thirsty and instead tried to drink water when I could. Sugar in drinks makes you thirsty so you end up drinking more of it. Next, I cut out eating so much junk food but still allowed myself small amounts, especially if I had a particularly strong craving. (Don't deny your cravings that's the best way to feel like you are suffering through your diet, moderation and portion control is the key here.) I also cut my regular (fairly large) meal portions in half and ate a lot more slowly to give my brain a chance to register that I was no longer hungry, making sure to pay attention for that brain signal so I didn't accidentally overeat. I do not starve myself, if I get hungry between meals I'll have a small snack to take the edge off. It's better to eat a bunch of small meals/snacks throughout the day (only when hungry) than 3 large meals at a specific time. I also made a conscious effort to choose healthier meals and snacks making sure to lay off any extra sugars and choosing fruits and veggies instead whenever possible. (Cutting out sugar is far more important than avoiding fats, eating "good" unsaturated fats actually helps satisfy hunger faster but do try to avoid saturated fats & hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils they'll clog up your arteries.) In the US they put hidden sugar in things you wouldn't expect so always check labels and suggested serving sizes. As for routine changes it's just a matter of being more active than you were, you don't have to do strenuous exercise or go to a gym, just take the stairs instead of an elevator, walk or ride a bike distances under a mile instead of taking your car, park further from the store entrance to get extra walk time in, take up playing Pokemon Go, Geocaching or a similar type of game that gets you walking, if you have a dog take him out for long walks in your neighborhood or a public park everyday, not only does the exercise do you good but it's also good for your dog. Anytime you can, find some activity to keep you active & moving instead of sitting on your butt. Go dancing, take up swimming, bike riding, nature walks, that kind of thing. Only eat when you are truly hungry (like stomach noticeably growling or strong hunger pangs.) DO NOT eat while watching TV/videos, you'll get distracted and end up overeating. DO NOT eat while emotional, that's another way to end up eating far more than you intended. If you treat yourself to something like ice cream, only eat a small reasonable portion out of a bowl, never eat directly from the container, this makes it hard to gauge a what reasonable portion is and if I have that much food in front of me I'll end up eating it all. You can do the same with dry foods by putting a reasonable portion in a small ziploc baggie instead of eating out of a larger bag. When eating a meal use a small plate or bowl and don't pile the food onto it. Using a larger plate makes it too easy to serve yourself too much food. Savor your food, slow down to enjoy the taste, don't scarf things down as fast as you can. If you add sugar & cream to coffee and can't stand it black try to cut the amount of sugar you add in half and don't use artificial/shelf stable creamer...its all partially hydrogenated fats, instead use cow milk, half n half or almond milk. All these small bad habits are what you need to break because all together they add up to weight gain. Its actually quite rare for significant weight gain to be caused by a medical condition or "bad genes." Take a look at your lifestyle honestly and you'll probably see areas where you need to improve. It's not so much about having strong willpower or changing to a radical diet & exercise approach. It's about understanding what a reasonable portion size is for your activity level. If you are highly active you can get away with eating more calories daily than if you are sitting in front of a computer or TV screen all day. Sorry the post is so long but I thought I'd share how I lost weight since so many seem interested in how it can be done.
