As a behaviorist, it is really interesting to see how Toby and Abby dog change their personality around a person that is NOT Morgan.

That’s a really good point! It took them a little while to warm up to us. Toby didn’t really care, Abby was skeptical. We also didn’t take the kids in with them just in case they didn’t care for the kids. But really the dogs were great while we were there!

Now that you bring it up it has been a little while since Morgan filmed himself putting up temporary fences - I can imagine it would be time consuming and complicated to set up the camera and carry everything. I think it was very compassionate of you both to try to help during hard times - and I respect you both deeply for your actions. But, no, when you have such thin margin it's easy to fall. I hope you both get your farming life back, and I hope when you look back your journey to your forever farm will be filled with good times and learning. You know, it never occurred to me that Abbie and Toby would be intimidating - it's such a shock realising that of course they would be. With all the different farming methods that you have seen, it would be good to write a (children's) book about it. What they do in each region and why they chose the animals, the crops, and how they farm and what are their future plans. Like the fact Morgan wanted his pond. There are a few different reasons. And it's interesting to see the pond's journey to what it is today. Why did he get his greenhouse structure, and what are the pros and cons for it? Why has Morgan pivoted his direction from mainly a duck farmer to a goose farmer? Do other farms have "pet" animals that are not truly useful or profitable, like Morgan's "Weird Chickens"? If it's a children's book, each region could be a new book as a connected series.
@BreakingNewRoots5 ай бұрын
That would be very interesting to put together! We are for sure thinking about a book, but it feels like everyone has a book anymore. We are in the works on a video, coming soon, date unknown, about the things we learned for ourselves as we begin a farm again, on lessons we have learned from all of the farms and regions we have visited. It has been most interesting to find so many regenerative farmers with different reasons for farming that tweak the playbook on regenerative farming to their area or their lifestyle.

But I'm sure you've learned by now you gotta make sure you're good before you can help anyone else. If you settle in somewhere, get to know your neighbors and fellow farmers around so that if hard times come again, you can think about forming a co-op so you can pool resources/labor, buy feed at a better price, etc., so you can keep feeding those in need. It's also just a great communal experience. The co-op solar panels like Morgan and his neighbors have is also a great thing and a big help. Much love from your new subscriber in Greece!

It's one thing when it's your own farm and you know the hygiene of the cows/milker/storage/etc. It's another thing when you don't know all that info. There's a reason pasteurization became the universal standard for milk - raw milk can be incredibly dangerous and has killed tons of people throughout history and prehistory. That doesn't mean it's always dangerous. But that's why I specified the importance of knowing not only where that milk came from, but knowing the cleanliness of the environment and storage. When it's your own farm, you can control all of that. When you're buying it from someone else? Well, I wouldn't trust it. Plus, my partner is immune compromised so he's more likely to get sick even from low levels of bacteria in the milk.

There is for sure! That it something we considered doing full time when we started this adventure. The hurdle we cannot get over is this. We live in an RV full time, which is the benefit. Yet we have 2 small kids. The drive from Vermont to Morgans back to Indiana took us 4 straight days. It would be a logistical nightmare to try and coordinate farm sitting stays. I mean if one week you were in Texas and the next you needed to be in Maine, the driving would be too much on our small family. The wear and tear on the camper and the truck would go up drastically too. I think someone could do it, just the size of their outfit and their family situation would have to be different, I feel. Good luck with your channel! They are a TON of work!

I don't normally watch a lot of farm videos only got hooked watching Morgan videos, as soon as I saw a few I was up for many nights trying catch up on a few years back. As soon as one uploads I'm usually one of the first fee, stop everything and click. You’ve got good story to tell as well. Subscribing 🎉🎉

Thank you so much! Honestly after 6 years of farming regeneratively. We thought we had all the answers. After traveling across the country and meeting and learning from 100 farms, they are all different! It has been an amazing adventure that isn't quite over with yet, but we are excited to settle down and grow our own food again!

Loved the angles you used, showing us a new side of GSF. As a side note, you're a very good speaker and kept me interested. No shade to your wife, but I feel you express your points better. Hope there will be more of you in front of the camera.

I subscribed because you are and can be more of a storyteller like Morgan. Specially when you said that you're not good with names. 90℅ of the time when people show their vulnerability the people watching appreciate that. Just be caring and be empathetic with the animals, because they are very smart and loveable they know the person who is talking by their voice and they know if you truly care for them to trust and give their respect in return. Thank you for sharing your day with us and we will be on the lookout for the best of what your channel can offer. Good luck and take care. 😊

What a wonderful video! You’ve made me nostalgic for the way I grew up on a farm. All the beautiful relationships you have with animals and the land. We had dairy and beef cattle, chickens, and at one time pigs and goats. Cows and pigs I love most- but find chickens and goats hilarious for different reasons.

I looked up the Salatin chicken tractors. I did not see wheels or skids. If they do not have either of these they are important to make the move easier. Seven Sons have skids on their 1,000 chick tractors and it seems makes them easier to move.
@BreakingNewRoots5 ай бұрын
The Salatin tractors have the infamous dolly that goes to them. Easy to weld and use. We did a video with J&L Green Farm in Virginia that still uses that style and shows the dolly. We have seen the large prairie schooners as well at several farms across America! Very cool!

Hello its good you & your wife are helping out on Gold Shaw Farm. Just take it 1 day at a time. you will do a great job for them. & when the time is right you will fine the right farm for you & your family. Good luck with your Kids. Just don't take on more them you can handle when you start out again. The 2 young cows are still to young for breading yet. Morgan is keeping them away from the bull. They need to wait till next year. That is why they are not with all the other cows the Bull.

We have another video coming with the farm where Morgan got his highlands from. We loved their farm and their story too, but we are now sold that we will end up with highlands when we settle down!

If it's crazy to talk to animals I must be certifiable. I talk to the neighbor's cats, squirrels, birds, especially blue jays, the blue tailed skunk that jumped on me, ran up my arm into my sleeve and down my back. That last one started out as hello little guy and then turned to where do you think you're going? Chickens are really fun to talk to.
@BreakingNewRoots5 ай бұрын
I guess I didn't realized I talked to animals as much as I did until I was doing chores at Morgans again!

That was a blue tailed skink, not skunk. I hate autocorrect. 😒 skunk would have been so much worse.

There should be a pole to put the reel on on the atv for the wire. 😅 If it's far enough to drive around to save time
@BreakingNewRoots5 ай бұрын
Yes that would be very nice! We have come to realize that we enjoy those smaller reels more and enjoy the walking back and forth. It makes a good workout and getting those extra steps in! I felt like it allowed me to stop and take it in more and just being with the cows!
@tarran45965 ай бұрын
@@BreakingNewRoots You could save even more time on larger areas by putting the poles in the atv too... Drive, stop, place pole, etc. I understand that you're taking it all in as much as poss. I would too
@BreakingNewRoots5 ай бұрын
@@tarran4596 this is something Morgan and I talked about the smaller reels versus the heavy duty fancy ones! The small reels make great for small daily moves, on his farm, and those heavy duty fancy ones do better on massive runs and big pasture moves!
