That slow start is definitely the best advice I’ve gotten in starting my journey. I figured that I would already have this place cleared and be getting pigs etc. I could try and rush it but now that I’m in it I see that I need to just focus on the goats for probably another two years before I can get pig ready! Slow growth but steady!

I found you guys from watching Morgan's channel. I think it is pretty smart to travel around and check out other farms and see what works and doesn't. I'm from Oregon and we are pretty diverse when it comes to farming/ranching. From the Oregon Agriculture website: There are more than 250 diverse products grown and processed in Oregon ranging from wheat to salmon. Only California has a higher number of commodities in the United States. top agricultural products include: milk, nursery stock, hops, cattle and calves, berries, pears, potatoes, eggs, onions, peppermint, wine grapes, cherries, hay and sweet corn. Oregon is the number one U.S. producer of: blackberries, hazelnuts, peppermint, cranberries, rhubarb, grass seed, florist azaleas and Christmas trees. I think having that diversity can be important.

You have a new viewer. Been watching Gold Shaw Farms since 2020 and this interview was a nice review of what has happened over the years. Do you find many families on the road like y’all trying to find how they will fit happily into our world? I also follow another family living on the road with 4 kids, ages 7-1 yr. They’re homeschooling, and the kids are getting a fantastic living history and natural world education.

Love gold Shaw farm!!!! My question is if the small male steer breeds the big female cow, she won’t have trouble calving but if she has a cow with the small genetics and is bred back, can she calve a cow with the big genetics? I’d be worried about the 3rd and so on generations.
@BreakingNewRoots5 ай бұрын
That's a great questions. The male 'cow' that can breed is called a bull, steers cannot breed; cows have had a baby, heifers cannot. Morgan does not want a closed herd and will not breed within the same genetic lines, so there shouldn't be much worry of that.

Probably late to the party. This is Tyson's quote from what I understand, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” I could be wrong but I don't think so. Not sure if Mike Tyson ever had a P&L plan.
@rhythmandblues_alibi3 ай бұрын
One common denominator I see with these content creator farmers is that they all came to farming from well-paid city jobs, with money saved. They had the capital to buy their property and invest in livestock. It's really hard when you don't have that big chunk of money saved up to try and break into farming, with no land already owned by your family.
@BreakingNewRoots3 ай бұрын
I can understand how that may seem like a common thing but actually it’s pretty balanced out. Paul and myself, are going to be starting from scratch, from the ground up with not much in savings. But, having a savings also took preparation and planning. They were willing to wait a little longer before going on their farming journey to save up money and other assets. Each persons story is different and unique.

That’s a great idea and a way to add some other products for sale but they also cost extra time and money so it depends on the farmer and how much they want to invest in it.
