I think it's also the huge amount of self-awareness that he shows. Usually narcissists hate being called one, but he instead accepts it, leans into it and is unapologetic about it. Meaning, he is honest about who he is, and that's a big plus in terms of liking someone. So many people are not able to be honest with and about themselves, so having someone like this, who clearly is a narcissist, typical douchebag pretty boy type, but also is self-aware and honest about it, is kinda like a breath of fresh air. You don't expect this from someone like Roland usually.

Another big reason why he feels likable is, he always manages to turn the spotlight to the other person - when Joey talked about how many mirrors there were in the living room, Roland started asking about the mirrors in Joey's living room, and threw a deeper introspective question "Don't you think mirrors reflect self-confidence". Almost every single topic they talk about, he asks about Joey's side or refer to what Joey mentioned earlier. I would say this skill probably got him get to this place as a "host" .

Well, actually I'm thinking of psychopats and sociopaths here, I mixed it up, but if this applies to them and to other personality disorders why not narcissism too? Having a specific personality disorder doesn't mean there is only one specific way to feel about it and handle it. Though of course the disorder itself influences how you feel about it. Some things I've noticed about his charisma: - He is relaxed and speaks slowly - He has a great memory for things he experienced and helps him share his experiences with other people - He uses a lot of analogies which makes it more interesting to listen to him (metaphors will also work, the more visual your language the better) - He is comfortable with himself and doesn't take himself too seriously, down to earth (practical, real world-day to day life oriented) - He has general knowledge of most things making him interesting to talk to (He tries to find a lesson in anything including anime) - He is an extremely good listener and let's the other person finish speaking. Even when he is midsentence and the other person tries to say something he just keeps silent to prioritize what the other person wants to say. - He is intelligent, knowledgeable and intellectual but doesn't flaunt or try to impress people he only shows this side of him when it is applicable, hence why people refer to him as down to earth as well - He exudes zero negativity or animosity in his tonality - He sprinkles in genuine small compliments making the other person feel comfortable and with each questions asks Joey's point of view on things - He is extremely well groomed and has pretty boy aesthetics (not sure if this contributes to charisma towards men, but it probably works very wel with women) - He has insane confidence - He clearly understands who he is talking to and his current audience, he probably would fit in any group and can hang out with any type of person. Unsung Heroes I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one (Ezekiel 22:30) Father’s Day is a special occasion designed by greeting card companies, no doubt, to honor our fathers. And though I think there is a certain commercial angle to the whole occasion that diminishes its effectiveness, I must say that I like the idea of having both a Father’s Day and a Mother’s Day. After all, the Bible does say, “Honor your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12) I don’t think we give enough credit to fathers these days. They deserve a lot of it, especially those who stick by their commitments, those who faithfully stand beside their wives and children. they are the unsung heroes. And their tribe is decreasing. There are fewer and fewer dads today who are there for their children. Yet a father’s influence is profound, far greater than that of any thing. I’m reminded of a statement that Mark Twain made: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.” You may not fully appreciate what it is that your father has done for you until you become a parent yourself. Then a lot of those things will come back to you. You will start understanding why he did many of the things he did and why he didn’t do many of the things you thought he should have done. How important good and godly dads are. I believe world needs them more than ever because of what we’re facing today. I think we could say that we’re looking for a few godly men-men who will stand in the gap, men who will be all that God has called them to be.

Working a host job and getting paid to make women laugh and then sleep with them once they fall for your fake persona that they paid you to put on for them is not the foundation for any normal relationship between a man and woman. These interactions are simply short moments of time, filled with drink, laughter, noise and money, and there isn't a genuine thing about that. He likely prefers 2D women because the stories he sees between the characters in anime are ironically more emotionally sincere and heatfelt than anything he experiences with his female "clients," in real life. He radiates coolness but never comes off snooty or above the people he's talking with. Good conversationalism lives in the moment with the people you're talking with.

It's really interesting to watch how strongly Roland panders to the guest in the conversation. How he constantly mentions Australia specifically every 5 seconds after hearing that Joey is from there (14:52 - "It's probably something that doesn't exist in Australia, or anywhere else in the world") Or mentioning anime to the Anime Man, when it's not even exactly the topic (18:38 - "Actually, it was anime" *proceeds to talk about reading manga which never even got an anime*) Or switching topics to Joey's work right after questions about his own work to express solidarity (20:45 - "And our work, KZbin too, is rough, right?") Or trying to find common grounds with a guest to seem relatable on topics even where is none (36:39 - "I think KZbinrs and hosts are kind of similar"). Like, come on, half of YTs are shut-in introverts who sit at home and talk to their camera, while hosts are actual IRL people entertainers. And you can't keep doing _any_ job forever and not decline in skills and income with age (although in most jobs that decline is much slower than for hosts and YTs, I agree), so that's a pretty far-fetched "similarity" that can be applied to almost any job that a guest has (and also you "chase targets" in most jobs as well). Or even constantly talking to the camera and mentioning "them" (us), essentially trying to keep even the camera men and the viewers kinda included in the conversation (16:04 - "So everyone watching this is probably thinking") And his body language - always sitting half-turned, sometimes leaning towards, sometimes full turning towards guest in the interview part. And he definitely practiced and prepared in advance a bunch of witty answers to the expected questions from any guest in his house ("why mirrors", "why Roland House", "body count", etc), loI. The most interesting part he does this pandering so effortlessly and unobtrusively that it's barely noticeable even if you're expecting it, like I am right now. I'm sure that if you're in his actual presence and especially if you're a little drunk as well that it would sound like magic in a sense that "he shares all my thoughts, he understands me so much!". Not surprising to hear "I really feel like we have a lot of similarities" from Joey at the end 45:18 there, he totally got charmed by all of it. The guy is really a master of his craft, impressive. Well, off to watching a vid on his channel then.

@@HelloOnepiece I would just say that his house is basically a night/host club for two. There's not much to talk about besides a couple of sentences about overall style, no personal trinkets to discuss at length whatsoever. Roland has to bring up anime and football himself, since there's not a single souvenir in sight that could suggest something about his hobbies/interests and encourage a conversation naturally. I think that contrary to your suggestion, Roland chooses minimalistic style in furniture/clothing (without many details that someone can discuss) specifically to *not* encourage a conversation _about him_ . Because, as a host, he probably prefers to encourage a conversation about a guest instead. Since most people like talking about themselves and feeling like they're being carefully and attentively listened to, like Roland does, and they would tip well for that. Even in this video, where Joey is supposed to interview Roland, he still flips the topics back to Joey's life and gets Joey to talk about himself for like a third of a video, lol.

Roland can really command a conversation and he's so charismatic. No wonder he's the #1 host. And this is just a glimpse of his work, imagine how it must be like to see him in his natural elements at a host club.

Seeing ROLAND's expression and body language when Joey described the first time reading FOTNS was incredibly wholesome. ROLAND shared a personal feeling with him and Joey absolutely connected to that.

Roland's questions and pattern of speaking gave me flashbacks to my university lectures in practical counselling... 😂 He demonstrated active listening through various cues and made witty and insightful feedback dialogue; it seemed like he was returning questions back to the interviewer, but that's actually a great tool to keep conversation flowing.. I honestly respect him, and I hope he continues to do well and live the fulfilling life he likes. And you as well Joey. I've been liking these "Introductions to members of the Japanese population/ culture" series you have been doing. Hope you both continue to do well. 😊

He's a smooth talker. It doesnt seem like we have anything in common, but he still made me feel comfortable and laugh. He seems easy to talk to, so I can see how he can earn so much in that crazy and foreign culture of hosting. He might just be one of the world's most dangerous men...

I didn't really know what to expect coming into this video but this was super entertaining. The guy clearly doesn't take himself too seriously and some of the one liners genuinely had me laughing out loud! I didn't think someone could ever talk like an anime character irl and it not come off as cringy, but this guy pulls it off somehow. Also, "Do you remember how many cups of coffee you've had in your life?" is crazy 💀

Things I learned today: 1. Psychologists struggle in Japan because people use hosts instead? 2. Roland's lipstick is on 👏 point👏( he should have told us the brand/shade, honestly)
@HeadCannonPrime Жыл бұрын
He said he owns a hair salon so I would bet that is also a makeup salon as well. I'm sure he had someone professional put his face on before the interview.

And would we be able to afford it even if he did tell us what lipstick he uses? I still find it strange, like, the dude has 4 houses, this one seems like the one to show off and have people over at. I find it insane that he says he has almost no clothes. And only that one suit? Can someone explain that to me?

I learned a lot while watching this. I noticed he kept asking Joey what he thinks to keep the conversation going. Also knowing someone's interests prior to their meeting and later use it to break the ice (he jokes about his alcohol display as figurines) makes him even more cooler. Even as I guy, given enough time, I might fall in love with him.

It's amazing to see how the body language changed when they started to talk about anime and their passions, you can see Roland, laid back and facing the camera at the start, then he was inclined facing Joey having fun talking about cute girls doing their best. Was more vocal and using more hand gestures, he was really enjoying the conversation and not just faking it. Everything was really entertaining and insightful. What a good video!

I can't believe I enjoyed this interview a lot!! It's really amazing that he can carry out a conversation so well. He listens patiently, genuinely interested in Joey too and answers everything in the most precise way possible! I get why girls are so crazy for him😩. Huge respect to you both🙏

The way he just said "If you want to change your life, if you spend your time like shit, be hired by me" I was like SAY NO LESS lmao but in all seriousness this is probably one of my favorite interviews Joey has done with professionals bc both himself and Roland are great conversationalists and bounced off each other very well, and it helped that they had a lot of common topics to talk about

This man's self awareness of his own narcissim is what makes me respect him. Not too many get to that point. Plus, he made it work in his favor; he became very successful doing what he does.

Just hearing Roland talk, just gives me courage again. As a visual impaired person with a connective tissue disorder that binds me to a wheelchair a lot. I had to be stubborn as fuck to get through life. Giving stuff up, finding stuff again. Anime certainly is like that pet that gives you unconditional love, (though can we have better English dubs thank you) So long as you have the will to try, you can do a lot or find something to bring you joy. This will be a video for me to remind me of this to push through. I am going to Japan next week, against all odds, against my body’s limitations, thanks to friends and 2 nurses. I am moving out on my own for the first time ever at 25, renting my own place, So never say never, cause it might surprisingly come to be true one day. I had given up on everything except for one thing in my life, and that’s trying everything when I can to enjoy it as much as I can. Geeze this comment is probably giant, and no one will read it, but I couldn’t help but be so touched and re inspired again. This helped settle my nerves for my Japan trip. Thank you both to Joey and Roland

I liked this discussion, it's cool seeing Joey genuinley seeking advice near the end, this discussion was very sincere, that is one of Joey's best qualities, he is sincere. It would be cool to see Joey just having conversations with people in Japan, it's amazing seeing the culture from different perspectives.

You can really see how much Roland has honed his skill of talking with how precise and well timed his responses are. He conveys what he wants to say in an efficient manner and then turns the conversation back to give the other person a chance to speak as well to keep things going smoothly. I didn't expect that i would like him that much but he seems like a very genuine person, plus he has those bars that he suddenly drops along with the perfectly timed jokes so i think his friends definitely love him.
@PinkPearl101 Жыл бұрын
The way he explains things and is able to have others understand him, using different kinds of examples to really in depth explain how he feels is an amazing skill to have. One I'm sure he got from all the time he has to spend talking with people. Super admirable!

His philosophy about spending a lot of money once on something very nice that is going to be good and last him a long time is actually not just wholesome considering his income, but also just insanely smart and I would say that’s actually what a lot of poorer people do to try and save money….. speaking from experience, my father always said buy in bulk, you save more money.

Joey is very easy to talk to, but Ro talks to people every day for a living, so I think he's just comfortable because this is second-nature to him now. His charisma and other social skills are why he was able to make it so far as a host.
