Having an illness or disability and living on a fixed income is very hard and most people don't understand the sacrifices one makes. Yet making the choice to live life doing the best you can with what you've got to do with is at times scorned on. Having to rest in bed because you chose to stand at the stove and cook that hamburger you made from the reduced ground beef is something more people do than known about. Life happens and we adjust to the best of our ability. Jeff, you're doing an amazing job on Bobblehead Homestead considering what you have to go through on a daily basis. All the beautiful flowers and positive changes in your place along with having chickens is a testament to yes you can do it in my opinion. It's up to us what we do with what we've been dealt often at the hands of others. We can choose to be positive or negative. You're certainly a positive kind guy. I do hope that during the hottest part of the day you do go rest and use that air conditioner to be comfortable

Thank you for the positive message. I wish more people understood the limitations that people go through just to make it through the days. I also have dreams of having my own place and all I hear when I talk about them is that "you can't do that with how you feel" or "you are just to lazy and to do that you have to work at it". It can get so discouraging. So Thank you Alice the Gmaw and a big thank you to Jeff.

What a great video, Jeff. Here's what I learn from you. (1). First priority is taking care of the needs of your body. (2) Doing something is its own reward. (3). Even the hard stuff is motivating. (4). Eat that elephant one bite at a time. (5). Motivations can come from inside and outside of yourself. (6). Dealing with challenges is an individualized thing. (7) Sharing the "real" stuff with others helps everyone understand what your challenges are. (8). Humor is always the best way to deal with things. (9). Friends and family are there when you need them. We feel we are on your journey with you. (10). Sometimes you have to feel the bad/sad feelings to get back to the good ones. Thank you for sharing your successes with us. Take care. Bunny in NWFL

You have tremendous progress since you first shared the first video last October. Please take care of you. Thank you to the donator who will make your life cooler! I bought myself a 3.5 cu ft. freezer when I retired, it has been a joy , especially when the budget gets low. I buy meat on sale and individually wrap portions for the freezer. Have saved money, as well as, have often times cooked extra and put full meals into it.

Ah, so, Parkinson's. That makes sense. You're so right about how being poor is expensive. Being in jail/prison is expensive, as I've learned through my youngest son (who is no longer in prison and no longer lives with me, Hallelujah!) I've been poor. We're now comfortable enough to save money buying in bulk, though not wealthy by any means. Hang in there Jeff! I'm rooting for you.

So glad to hear you are making progress on your homestead and getting some things to help make your daily struggles a little more comfortable. It's nice to hear there are people out there who are able to help you out. Sleep is such an important thing. Have experienced the very scary side effects of too little sleep, do your best to get back to your regular pattern before it hits you hard. You have accomplished a lot so far, and it has been a pleasure to watch your garden expand and begin to bloom, but be patient. I heard something recently about pain that struck a chord in me, which helped me get through some pain of my own. I can't recall where I heard it, perhaps a movie or something, but it went something like, pain is what life sends us to relate to each other, remind you that you are alive, tell you that you might need to change something in your life or appreciate what you have. You should never be afraid of pain or try to avoid it completely as when you stop feeling all pain, you'll lack sympathy for others, it will signal the end or you'll never appreciate life's painless moments. I think it helped me cope with pain better, and definitely helped me to look forward to those painless moments just that bit more. Keep fighting a good fight.

Jeff for years now I have been taking care of my father in law James with Parkinson's. What a horrible disease that robs. We figured out that homegrown food was what the Parkinsons responded to in his case and if he had to go out of the house which was not often he would take an anti-inflammatory the night before and the day of and that would give an edge of mercy/help. Doctors convinced him to go on meds and it robbed him of his life and mind. I have seen those that do not take meds and those are the ones that have life. I know what your going through is not easy at all and no one knows how debilitating it is but I have to say for me it's wonderful to see someone such as yourself doing and going forward one step at a time. Thank you

Check out an organization called Hunters for the Hungry. In the late fall to early winter you may be able to arrange for some fresh deer meat to go in your freezer. The kills are donated by hunters and usually dressed by professionals and distributed to the needy. Sometime through food banks and churches such as may available to them to distribute. I find the resource is most valuable to me. Especially since I like deer meat better than beef. Slow cookers are really good to cook all sorts of meals and they do not heat up a house the way a stove does. Even use it in an area that is away from your main living area. On another note, I have been patiently waiting to see how you turn all this effort into cash. The plants are in the ground and need to be dug up and potted again to be sold. But is the season past for that? I will continue with your journey and wait to see. Best wishes and God bless.

You are right about poor being expensive. The freezer will use a little electricity, but will save you a ton on groceries. And those little blue ice blocks can be wrapped in a cloth and used for a cool down, you know, for power surges and what have you. Yay for the AC, that ought to make you human again. I don't know how people went without it in the old days. Houses were built differently, but still.......... Your flowers are really jazzing the place up. It's just getting better and better. I deal with pain issues too. There are days when I'm a slug and good days too. I let some things get behind, not everyone is very accepting of that, but oh well, I'm going to spend part of my energy having fun. They'll just have to get over it. I've gotten help from others at times too. It's easy to be the one giving help, not as easy learning to accept it gracefully. But here's my theory: giving help is a real blessing to the giver, and if you don't allow them to share when they want to, you're squashing their blessing, so just accept help gracefully, dangit. Still working on that one. Thanks for sharing your story with us. You're a blessing and a motivation.

bsofar , back in the day most houses had an upstairs , the upstairs helped keep the main floor cool , also people would circulate the cool air from the basement to the main floor . some people hooked up a small pump to a big old tractor radiator and used the water from the cistern as a way to keep the house cool . they even had those old style coolers that ran using dc or propane , the heat produced went out the chimney . some people also had outdoor units using wood fire instead of propane and with the help of a fan pushed the cool air into the house through an air duct . most days they only had to open the windows just before they would go to sleep and pull the cool air in from the shade side of the house and blow the warm air out of the sunny side .

Wow! You have a lot of information here. This could come in handy some time. I was just thinking of the wide covered wrap-around porches and the strategic planting of deciduous trees. You are on it.

i always liked the wrap around porches with a yard full of trees , the house i now live in is the old family farm house and has half of a somewhat wrap around porch , do to maybe karma my dream wont come true to fix this old house into something a bit more liveable . it already has the trees , i put most of the hard work into planting a number of different trees , its a shame that i most likely will be dead before i could be motivated to fix it up anymore than i have already . i just wish life were not so unfair . nevertheless i had some enjoyment when i were younger i will remember those times for as long as my mind allows it . :)

What will you plant in a winter garden this year? And here's a tip for you. You will save money if you buy a chicken whole. The price goes up when butchers cut the chicken into sections or make special packages with, for example, exclusively chicken thighs. And when you buy the chicken whole, you can debone the chicken and freeze the chicken bones. Once you have a couple or three chickens worth of bones, make bone broth, an extremely nutritious beverage served warm or hot or used as liquid when making rice or other grain dishes.

Jeff, I so appreciate your outlook. and thank you for the update, I was wondering how you've been doing. I've not been watching channels as much as I was (long story), so have missed a few weeks of yours and others. It was good to catch up here. That's awesome you were blessed with the funds to get a better A/C unit. How did you manage with a tiny fridge though? To me that would seem more difficult than being without a stove or oven. I was without an oven/stove for two years here, that was an adventure. Microwave, electric skillet and the Barbecue grill. Oh and btw, I so agree with you on the prices of meat!!! I was just at the grocery store and they had family paks of steaks, buy one get one free. Spend more money to save, I hate that. It's the kind of thing has been probably my hardest thing to deal with since my husband died and I'm living on less. Say, have you talked to anyone about going in on a portion of a beef cow? That's what I was thinking of doing. I don't eat that much so a little would go a long way and it's got to be less per pound than the stuff I've been buying and better meat too. You know enough people you may be able to make that work. Just a thought.

I suggest you get involved in the nearest church, or a group you can share, other than the youtube - internet´s friends. we need to socialize! that is important. please think about it!

Jeff, I understand about pain and trying to avoid it. Used to be my first half an hour in the morning was spent relearning how to walk. I used to hurt everywhere all the time. Best thing I ever did was to buy a dog. We started walking at first with painkillers, then fewer pills and longer walks until I was back to where I had been. I'm not saying it is what you should do, just saying try to keep moving if you can.

My late mother-in-law had Parkinson’s and she could hardly walk because she’d freeze up .. everyone is different and affects people differently as you said..just found your channel by way of OITC .. people don’t realize how much a freezer saves by allowing to by in bulk.. also allows you to freeze leftovers for use at a later day.. milk goat would probably be better than a cow.. they eat the weeds too..

Thanks for the update from the heart! I respect that despite the hardships you are living close to nature, working hard, planning for the future, creating beauty. Waders would probably be very hot to wear but maybe would prevent chigger bites? Or a beekeeper suit?

paying rent/mortgage is what holds most people at a deadd end job , paying land taxes is the best affordable way to live other than not having to pay either rent/mortgage or land tax . most people are not allowed to live off the land , they have to pay some sort of land living expense .

Look at those flowers! That's great. I haven't watched in a while. Good to see ya. There more competition with those grass fed beef packages. Just picked up 4 pkges of veal less than $5 each. I never pay full price for anything.

I will keep my eyes and ears open for better deals. As I live here longer and get to know more people I'm bound to come across some good deals. Thanks!

I’m disabled, on pain meds from several sets of neck hardware. My favorite thing is advice from people that have never dealt with long term pain, or the Sanctimonious Opioid Nazis who say you should never take pain meds. First, Tylenol and Advil are both horrible for your liver and kidneys, I took enough Advil to bomb my stomach and intestines, my GI guy said “your insides look like a boiled, angry lobster..!” There’s a difference between addiction, dependence and being stable on meds. I had a coop built this year, waiting now on McMurray to send chicks in April to force me outside in winter. Really looking forward to caring for the ladies. Right..how much pain can you endure. It’s like you wake up with a certain number of chips, and you use them up during the day, sometimes you wake up with very few chips available. I was abandoned by friends and colleagues, they are cruel. One lady I worked with over twenty years saw me in the store, she asked how I was, I complained some and she said “well, you look good enough to go shopping..” well, duh..ppl have to eat, so, unless I want to starve I go to the store. Hang in there..what else can we do?

Forgot to add..the other fallacy is that pain meds relieve all your pain. The best they can do is give you relief sometimes. That’s what keeps you sane in the long term. I feel horribly for ppl that can’t get access to pain meds. Even surgery in hospitals is bad now because depending on who you get, they may not control your pain adequately. Before you get stuck in a hospital recovering from a procedure, make them outline your pain control.

Hi Dale! I just saw your October 3rd part 2 video. You should change the title on this video to something that has Parkinson's in it. It could really be helpful to other who have it and it would also help with the naysayers out there. Thank you for sharing your journey.♡

i know exactly what you mean when you talk about hard times . if not for the family farm and being funded through disability i am sure i would be involved in some major criminal activities . if i had to pay rent i am sure i would not have enough left over to buy food . other than the pain my body failing me , when a person looks at it financially the only time i had it so good was when doing crime .

What state are you in? My brother has Parkinson’s and he does what he can as he can. He does have times when he just has to rest. He doesn’t take any RX either. I am so blessed! Over 70 in great health! A freezer is a great way to preserve food from your garden. Have you thought about a 2 burner stovetop? They are nice and they are not expensive. Possibly a convection/microwave combo for an oven?

You are the richest poor man I've ever had the pleasure too know. My grandfather always said that money don't make a man rich, It's how many friends he has that make him rich, I see you have got a lot of friends. God uses people to see that HIS kid's needs are meant. And I must say that God is especially fond of you, HE is using all your friends to bless you beyond measure...

I am enjoying watching your videos. I have to limit myself too because I have a lot of metal in my back and neck holding things together. Just work till you are tired then rest then do a little more. You are doing great. I live in Tennessee from Ohio. Take this tip for chiggers. Put your pants legs into your socks and then a rubber band or an old shoelace to hold them in place. I also put vasoline on my ankles and feet before I put my socks on. It keeps them from getting in your skin. They get stuck and can't crawl up your legs. Peroxide in a spray bottle when you undress and stand in the bathtub will kill any that are on you. I learned that from an old relative down here. You learn a lot from the old folks. If you have a senior center in your town go there. Meals are usually a little more than a dollar and you can find activities and friends there in the air conditioning. God bless.

So they are talking about chiggers in my urban farming group... several have said to mix Vicks with sea salt and put it on the wounds. One suggestion for prevention was to use Avon's Skin So Soft. My mom used to get me the bubble bath and it kept the mosquitoes away. They bit me bad and my bites got huge. It worked... so it couldn't hurt to try it for chiggers. I think you can just place an order online now, you don't need an "Avon Lady" lol. They also sell bite medication at the store, there are several different brands (chigger rid is one) and benzocaine is also supposed to help. Other suggestions are meat tenderizer, Absorbine Gel horse liniment from the feed store, benedryl cream, tea tree oild, clove oil, and apple cider vinegar. Oh and amputation but I don't advise that one! I've had chiggers bad a few times... it's no fun at all and the ones behind the knees are the worst for sure!
