I resisted drinking in the Army even though it effectively halted my career for most of my 22 years service. I simply didn't get peer pressured into it, I then unexpectedly married an alcoholic, which resulted me mostly looking after her child and mine alone. I left the army and fell into alcoholism for 14 years, drinking 2 bottles of wine and beers and even more at the weekends. Eventually it started to effected my work and I had to leave work at my own choice for the good of the company. I decided enough is enough and since the 2nd of January this year I haven't drank a drop.

Steve, I came across your videos in the last week or so and loved them and your sense of humor! I like that you laugh at yourself as well. That’s a great quality to have and your honesty as in this video. Because of your suggestions in books I’m now reading Catherine Gray’s book. I won’t stop watching your videos because I know for myself moderating or mindful is out of the question for me right now….its like an analogy I read about riding a bike on the same path all the time that it produces a rut and if you stray from but stay too close you may wobble and fall back into it. Alcohol is the rut and mindful is the wobble! lol 😅 At the same time I would like to see what mindful looks like…I’m no where near 18 months so you’re right not to even consider it.😊😘

This video just popped up in my recommendations, so I'm not sure what your story is and why you stopped drinking in the first place, but I assume for health/fitness reasons or to feel better, rather than having a problem with alcohol? But for those who have a problem with alcohol, that is usually not a good idea to try to drink again "in moderation". It is a slippery slope, and you will always develop a tolerance with alcohol so eventually you'll need to drink more, and so then you end up right back where you started from.

Top man Steve for sharing. I haven’t heard the ‘hand shandy’ reference since school in the late 80’s, time to revive it me thinks. Cheers Steve

@@SteveJulien hi mate, I came across a brand of beer called “small beer” today in the pub, it’s 2% ABV. I’m usually tee total, but I gave it a go and was impressed. I checked out their website after maybe you could give it a try and review your thoughts on it. Cheers

That junk food analogy is a game changer! I'm closing in on five years sober but I'm about to go on my first holiday in five years too and I'm having real troubles with weighing up whether to break the streak!😬

Feel like you have gone 5 years you have developed a healthy relationship with alcohol and the only thing stopping you having a drink is the annoyance of breaking a streak .

Steve, isn’t it a massive contradiction to say you mindfully drink when alcohol is a drug that messes with your mind? I hope you don’t slip back into bad habits. Remember the fly trap from Alan Carrs book.

I really hope alcohol-free beers (or low alcohol such as 0.5%) beers are improved. I really like the taste of beer but would like to cut down on having actual alcohol. The problem with alcohol-free beers is that they add sugar to improve the taste, which defeats the point of it for me.

They have 100% got better. Go for the ones that are brewed the same as normal beer only to 0.5. They are very low in sugar and the taste comes from the process and not added sugar.

@@SteveJulien What do you recommend? I like Ghost Ship 0.5% and even Brewdog Nanny State, although the latter is a bit hard to get a hold of.

I had forgotten what real energy felt like, yeah, it’s been over 2 years and I don’t crave the stuff anymore, surprisingly I didn’t suffer withdrawal and that was key, not even within the first days after go’ogling Steffon Barkload’s latest and quitting because I wanted to with no pressure or anything.
