Bravo, well done Dani. The closest I've ever come to a sea and landscape like that was whale watching with the College of the Atlantic off Maine, where the mountains look so magnificant and high from the sea. A September day - it was the Autumnal Equinox - and while the temps were very good, around 60 F, there were large swells. And not many whales...and no foxes.

Absolutely wonderful, thank you for sharing. If the eider ducks weren't hunted by humans for their feathers, there would be enough for the foxes? I amy be wrong here.
@denniseldridge293619 күн бұрын
Which reminds me that when I was very young, we had what we called an 'eider down'. This was actually what we'd now call a duvet, and was filled with eider feathers. It's sad to know that they were hunted for their feathers.
@Kim-J31219 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same .... if the ducks weren't hunted, there would be enough food for the foxes . It was kinda surprising that Iceland 🇮🇸 didn't ban it or keep it very limited 💔
@hugithordarson18 күн бұрын
Eider ducks aren't hunted for feathers, quite the opposite. They've been considered an important human companion since the country was settled and have been a fully protected species in Iceland for almost two centuries. Eider farmers usually create a secure area for the birds to nest in, patrolling it to protect them from predators, human or fox and when it's safe, they collect the down from the birds' nests. It's in their interest to protect and preserve the birds.
@komocka18 күн бұрын
@@hugithordarson Yes, both on Iceland and in Norway they build small houses for the female eiders to roost in, after the chicks are hatched the down is harvested
@Kim-J31218 күн бұрын
@hugithordarson Thank you so much for explaining the duck farms in Iceland 🇮🇸. Now it makes more sense. I didn't know there were farms for this purpose. I thought this was foxes impacting the ducks in the wild , as in humans hunting them to extinction leaving foxes with no food or limited food. Appreciate the explanation 👍

Delightful video Misc Conner. A colleague of mine here at SanDiego zoo told me a wildlife photographer journalist was covering the very animal I’ve been studying for the last 10 years. You did a very fine job indeed. I hope you get to travel to Hudson Bay Canada where we have a few Vulpes lagopus waiting for you. Thank you for the exposure you’ve given to one of the most a beautiful animals that was nearly hunted out of extinction. Perhaps I’ll even see you in SanDiego one day.

Hi Dani. Great video as always... But of course eider are not killed for their down. That would be like killing the duck that lays the golden eggs 🙂 This is from the homepage of Icelandic eiderfarmers. "Eider farming and down collection is based on centuries-old traditions. Farmers provide wild eiders protection from predators, patrolling colonies day-and-night during nesting season. A unique relationship has developed between farmers and eiders. They trust each other. In spring the farmers prepare for the arrival of the eider. They clean the nesting area. To encourage the bird’s return, farmers often use radios and colorful items. At nesting time the female eider sheds the down from her breast. This exposes her body warmth to the eggs while nesting. When it’s safe for the eiders, farmers carefully collect the down. When an adult eider is two to three years old it begins nesting. It usually returns to the area where it hatched to start a nest of its own."

Fabulous account, Dani! Now about the calendar when it arrived - may sound corny, but when I opened the box and saw the calendar and goodies, that was delightful and then something else was in the box. You. Your entire essence came out of the box. Gave me tingles, the good kind. If it could be seen, it would be like wafts of smoke. I know, corny., except to say somehow you yourself popped out of the box. Do with that info what you will. I never opened a piece of mail and had that experience before. Chalk it up to connection.
