How was it living there? How did you manage the cold climate?
@jolenethellamaКүн бұрын
@@DarknessIsThePath It's an interesting place, and also very small. I was there in October and November, just when it was about to go dark-dark. There's no sunlight during the winter months, and there's no darkness during the summer months. It gets pretty dang cold when the wind hits you (and I say this as a Norwegian). Most people wear full-body wool underwear, and warm clothing over, to keep from freezing. Thick wool socks, propper gloves and a warm beanie does the trick. In other woords; you have to dress in layers. You always have to keep in your mind that there's a chance (although small) that you can meet polar bears. And if you venture outside of the city centre without a car, you have to (by law) bring either a flare gun or a gun/rifle with you.

@@jolenethellama Cool, thanks for sharing, sounds like an experience to say the least. Who knows, maybe one day I'll visit too :)
@jolenethellamaКүн бұрын
@DarknessIsThePath For sure you should give it a visit 😊 It's an expensive place though, but some people welcome couchsurfers to crash on their couch, and there's a camping close to the airport (but be warned, a man sleeping in his tent was killed by a polar bear a few years ago). You can also see if you can get a seasonal job while you're there, to get a bit of a more local experience (recommended) 😀

Wonderful to see this again. I went there in 2018 and stayed in the same hotel. The rooms, bar and breakfast room look the same, but the reception looks like it has been refurbished. The buildings were actually built for the Lillehammer Winter olympics in 1994 and moved here to make this hotel after the games. I was quite surprised when I stayed there that if you book a room in the suites (I didn't) they were actually in a separate building opposite so you had to go outside to get to the hotel facilities which I thought was odd. Your journey seemed convoluted. When I did it you could do it both ways in a day which is what I did. I did Heathrow to Oslo then Oslo to Longyearbyen (both on SAS) and the same in reverse. Like on your trip the flight stopped in Tromso on the way too. The reason for this is Svalbard is actually outside Schengen (in fact I think technically there is no immigration there at all and anyone can go there without even a passport, if you can find a way to get there). Hence you have to go through customs at Tromso to leave Norway again I believe. As to the no gun sign in the shop, in Svalbard it is a legal requirement to have a gun with you (and various other equipment such as a locator beacon) if you go outside of the towns or at least one person in your party has to (hence tour guides will have a gun if you go on any tours). Hence most residents have guns. The Radisson Blu there used to have a gone cabinet near the shoe racks for that reason, not sure if it still does. The town looks much as I remember it but not sure if that big CoOp was there. I went in the summer, so had 24 hour daylight, but the snow was still on the tops of the mountains there. I shall be interested in seeing if you go on any excursions. I took a trip to Ny Alesund. I think this is actually the most northerly town in the world and it's where most expeditions to the North Pole set off from. There is a statue of Roald Amundsen there, who set off from there, as well a shop. Though it's mostly a research town. I had to go there by boat (it's about 3 hours each way I seem to remember) because there are no roads, but I think the sea ice would make it impossible in the winter. Also went Barentsburg and on a walking trip (but that is a Russian settlement, so it may not be possible now) and up to the mountains behind Longyearbyen (even in the summer, crampons and snow shoes required). Didn't see any polar bears though but did see the reindeer wandering in the town as you did , as well as Walruses. I would love to go back and hope to do so.l I had an amazing time there, it is quite literally like nowhere else on earth. Also the tour guide to Ny Alesund was excellent and very friendly so learnt a lot from her. Thank you so much for sharing this. It is wonderful to see it there again and to see what it is like in winter!

Nice video. Strictly speaking Mary-Anns Polarigg(where I stayed last year) which is about 100 meters further north is actually the most northern hotel in the world. The Guinness book of records definition of most northern hotel only relates to 'full service' hotels which excludes most non-chain (and even some well known chain) hotels from it's definition. Mary-Anns is more interesting to stay in as it's old miners quarters converted into hotel rooms, their restaurant includes more local meats(if you fancy a bit of seal steak!) and their stuffed polar bear has boxing gloves but I'd love to have to stayed at the Radisson Blu, regardless of how northern it is, too!

Oh this is one of the places I’d love to go during the Polar night to experience darkness 24/7. Lol

That’s an amazing trip Tim. I would love to do this What an experience. Thank you for sharing and giving us an insight to the environment and lifestyle. The Hotel you stayed in looked really lovely and the price was not too bad for all that’s included too. It must be very strange that it’s dark 24/7 Well Done Tim Great Vlog Thank you

The “Shoes off” tradition originates from the mining history in Swalbard, it has nothing to do with ice and snow, more with coal dust.

Looks like you had a much better experience with this airline than with a certain other one you travelled with recently!

I got a kick from the fact that the world's northernmost hotel is part of a chain that originated in Minnesota.

In one of Jo Nesbø's books, the main character flees to the northern most town in mainland Europe. It's called Skarsvåg. From the town, you can get to Nordkapp, a spit of land north of the town.

Love this video. Great filming and commentary. A trip to Svalbard is definitely something I'd love to do. Considering the nature of the hotel, £146 for a night/breakfast/sauna seems a reasonable deal. Trosmo/Tromso made me laugh :) Any plans to redo this in the Midnight Sun?

The bathroom does seem to be in need of a refurbishment, but it seems like they did a good job with the rest of the room.

Ok now I'm subscribed and absolutely dying to visit this gorgeous place. As someone who loves the cold and who is lying here on a warm evening in Australia, I'm thinking about how I can make it happen for this Christmas! I REALLY appreciated the detail your video contained and the ambience that, I believe the word is "hygge", that comes through your experience. I want to watch the video again already! Thank you!

The far North & polar nights have always been so interesting to me. Sometimes it feels like I spent a past life there or something. Feel a weird connection to it for no logical reason I can come up with.
