I grew up there! Riverbend Hot springs is a gem! The town kinda died off after the lake was drained in 2000. But there is a good vibe still around. We go back once or twice a year to hit up Riverbend. Also the hike up Turtle back mountain is amazing. If you go back go tubing down the river! It’s so chill! Great video! Cheers!

As someone who used to live in T or C back in the late 80's it's cool to see how much it's changed, but soul crushing to see how little water is in the Butte (used to have 3 to 4 times that amount of water in it). Might have to go back one of these days just to revisit it.

Story time.. I lived in New Mexico, up in Socorro County, for about ten years. I used to make the hour drive down to T or C for the hot springs. (Riverbend.. best choice) I sold my property there and rambled around for a few years, before heading back to New Mexico to spend the holidays with family. Ended up staying and working as a ski lift operator at Sandia. My dad had heart surgery, and I left for Nevada to care for my parents while he recovered. Did a bunch of concrete and heavy equipment work while I was there, and made over $25,000, and got a vintage travel trailer in trade for a concrete driveway for my cousin (because I wouldn’t charge labor to family, but when he insisted that I take the 1962 Serro Scotty Sportsman.. how could I say No? Long story short.. Dad was healed, and it was time to push on. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner together, and I told the folks that I would be leaving the next morning. My basic plan was to head to T or C, soak in the springs, and focus on writing a novel. (NOT the one you are currently reading!) I would buy a small parcel, park my trailer, soak daily, and try not to get a job.. just pay myself to write. I never made it.. My first stop was Alkali Hot Spring, near Goldfield. I had planned to soak and stay the night there, but the windy, cold weather made me rethink the camping part, (still had a great soak, and all to myself!) and I decided to head to my next stop, further south, and lower in elevation. I arrived at Bailey’s Hot Springs, just outside of Death Valley, and just north of the small town of Beatty, to find it closed, and appearing destroyed and abandoned. I met the owners that day, (an absolute omen of fate, as they live in Las Vegas, and visited very infrequently.)Their latest caretaker hadn’t worked out, so i was in. I never left. I’m still here almost six years later. It is providing material that threatens to eclipse the fictionalized autobiographical true crime tragicomedy of my first novel, and I have soaked twice a day, everyday.. and it is the best hot spring water of the many I have soaked. Still closed for business, but I have kept myself busy with gardens and animals, repairs and improvements, and the adventure and intrigue that each new place holds.. If you are ever in the neighborhood, feel free to stop by. The water is miraculous, and friends and family are always welcome. p.s.: I’ve arted, too!

After my family moved away it was like the everyone drifted apart. I also got to see where my mom's old friend lives, she used to be like another mom to be.
